LAS VEGAS (CBS Sports.com) – IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon has been seriously injured in a massive 15-car wreck has sent cars flying through the air early in Sunday’s Las Vegas Indy 300. Paul Tracy, who was involved in the wreck, said a team of doctors were working on Wheldon, but there was no word of his injuries. A helicopter lifted off from the speedway, but there was no indication if Wheldon was onboard. Pippa Mann also appeared to be shaky as she was helped to an ambulance. The wreck coming out of Turn 2 on the 12th lap left Townsend...
  • Indy 500’s better than ever at 100 -- official thread?

The Indianapolis 500 celebrates 100 years of competition Sunday. From the first winner, American Ray Harroun in something called a Marmon "Wasp," to the latest, Englishman Dario Franchitti, the Indy 500 has become the most famous race in the world. This year, observers say it boasts the strongest 33-car field it has seen since the CART-Indy split in 1996. It’s a regular stop for the Izod IndyCar Series drivers, but the race also includes former champions and non-IndyCar regulars who are in a ride for one shot at glory at The Brickyard.

Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history recently, winning the Indy Japan 300 by 6 seconds. Some women's advocates and Patrick herself are complaining about a new rule which feminists claim is "aimed at the women in Indy." The rule says that lighter drivers have to carry ten more pounds on them. Race car driver Robby Gordon has a different perspective, saying that Patrick is at an unfair advantage over the rest of the competitors because she only weighs 100 pounds. Because all the cars weigh the same, Patrick’s is lighter on the race track. He says:...

Danica Patrick used a fuel gamble to take a historic victory in the delayed Motegi round of the IRL IndyCar Series. The Andretti Green Racing driver took the lead with just two laps to go as the rest of the front-runners had to pit for fuel and became the first woman to win a major American open-wheel race. Patrick had run towards the foot of the top ten for most of the race, as Ganassi's Scott Dixon and Penske's Helio Castroneves dominated the event. But AGR's decision to bring Patrick in for an additional fuel top-up at the end of...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Six times already Sam Hornish Jr. has tried to make it into NASCAR's main event, and all six times he's been sent home. The failure has only made him want it more. The three-time Indy Car Series champion is moving to NASCAR in 2008, joining the mass exodus of open-wheel stars fleeing to America's most popular racing series. He told The Associated Press he will drive the No. 77 Dodge next season for Penske Racing with Mobil 1 as the sponsor. "I've tried to qualify for these Cup races, and it's kind of lit a little bit...

[snip]This might be the last year [Robby Gordon or anyone for that matter] can attempt the Memorial Day weekend double. Officials at ABC have discussed the possibility of pushing the starting time of the Indy 500 back by a couple of hours to help with TV ratings. If that happens, the chance of anyone competing in both races is diminished. "It would mess it up, but it is what it is," Gordon said. "I think that would be a mistake on the IRL's side because then Tony Stewart or myself would never be able to come over and compete. "It...

Tony George's bid to put his main competitor out of business failed Wednesday when a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge approved the sale of bankrupt Championship Auto Racing Teams to a group intent on keeping the series alive. George began the day hoping to make his Indy Racing League the only game in town. He ended it a gracious loser after his $13.5 million bid was rejected by Judge Frank J. Otte at the end of a daylong hearing in a packed courtroom at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and Courthouse. Moments after Otte rendered his verdict, evoking cheers from many...
