California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom is worried that Democrats may be taking the so-called “big blue wave” in November for granted. In fact, the California gubernatorial frontrunner reportedly said on Tuesday that he does not see any evidence of a monster November blue wave, even in the bluest of blue states. When reporters asked him about the potential for a “big blue wave” in November, Newsom, according to Politico, replied: “I don’t see evidence of that. … In California, we kind of feel like we’ve got this. It’s a big blue state and in some respects, I think we kind...

The Massachusetts secretary of state is welcoming President Donald Trump's announcement that he is disbanding his controversial voter fraud commission. Trump convened the commission to investigate the 2016 presidential election, after alleging repeatedly and without evidence that voting fraud cost him the popular vote. Trump won the Electoral College. Democratic Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin was among officials from more than a dozen states who refused to comply with the commission's demand for reams of personal voter data. Galvin said Thursday "I am delighted that our lack of cooperation led to the demise of this thing." He said Trump's...

On a network that is full of extremely weird talking points, it takes a lot to stand out as truly bizarre, but Gavin McInnes managed to pull it off recently on Fox News. In a discussion about women getting drafted, McInnes took the usual anti-feminist blather of the network to a whole new level, arguing that it’s actually men who are the second sex in our society. “By every metric, men have it worse off,†he argued, as the other guests looked on with disbelief. “We’re more likely to get raped if you include prison, we’re more likely to be...

On Tuesday, California voters determined who will face off in November for key state offices, and San Francisco names had a big day. Governor: In one corner, we have Republican nominee and Atherton resident Meg Whitman, who has (so far!) spent $71 million of her own money to convince us she’s a fiscal conservative. During her Tuesday speech accepting the Republican nomination, Whitman declared herself the “nightmare” of politicians in Sacramento. I don’t disagree. I feel most sorry for the ones who will have to explain to her the rules governing the state Legislature, including the structural barriers that prevent...

Newsom breaks his silence with the media SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom emerged Thursday from nearly three weeks of avoiding the public spotlight, to confront a massive city budget crisis. When the mayor dropped out of the governor's race, he dropped out of sight and steered clear of reporters until today. A smiling Newsom emerged today, even though the issue he wanted to discuss is grim. He told his department heads Thursday that San Francisco faces a $522 million deficit in the next fiscal year.

Replace the hopeless Humvee, Pentagon chiefs are urged By David Rennie in Washington (Filed: 28/04/2004) Humvees are proving easy prey on the streets of Iraq Armoured cars being sent to Iraq are not up to the job, according to a senior United States army general, prompting calls for Pentagon chiefs to swallow their pride and reactivate thousands of mothballed Vietnam-era armoured personnel carriers. With improvised bombs, rifle fire and rocket-propelled grenades taking an ever deadlier toll on coalition forces, the Pentagon is spending £225 million to replace thin-skinned versions of the Humvee, the US military's ubiquitous jeep-like transport, with an...

<p>San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said Thursday he realizes his push to legalize same-sex marriage has made him radioactive to many of his fellow Democrats and will severely limit his role in the presidential campaign of Sen. John Kerry, a longtime friend for whom the mayor and his father are raising tens of thousands of dollars.</p>

<p>IT'S FUNNY that, in a city that prides itself on its nonconformity, so many people make the exact same argument exactly the same way. To wit, after I write that Mayor Gavin Newsom was wrong to flout state law by authorizing same-sex marriages, a legion of readers write comparing gay and lesbian newlyweds with civil-rights legend Rosa Parks. To say that Newsom should have more respect for the law, they argue, is like saying Rosa Parks should not have engaged in her landmark act of "civil disobedience."</p>

<p>San Francisco officials went on the attack Thursday in their fight over same-sex weddings, suing the state on the grounds that laws defining marriage as between a man and woman illegally discriminate against gays and lesbians.</p>
<p>In bringing the Superior Court suit, officials also tried to gain an edge over anti-gay marriage forces by naming as defendants the two groups that have sued the city, the Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund and Campaign for California Families.</p>

Prominent Democrats question S.F. nuptials BOXER, GAY LAWMAKER DISAGREE WITH MAYOR'S DECISION For a week, the parade of gay couples lining up to marry at San Francisco City Hall has resonated as a love story, a civil-rights struggle, a morality play and a legal tussle. (SNIP) But the biggest surprise of the day came from U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, seeking her third term this fall and long a champion of gay rights, who publicly stated that she does not believe in changing state law to allow for the recognition of same-sex marriage.
