Young people and independents are helping Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump remain competitive with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in New Mexico, a new poll finds. Clinton led Trump five 5 percentage points, 45-40, heading into the final stretch of the campaign, according to the survey, which was conducted Monday. Support for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, New Mexico’s former governor, dropped in the new poll to 9 percent. The statewide survey of 1,899 likely voters was conducted by ZiaPoll. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.25 percent.

I cannot hide my schadenfreude about the Election 2016 Libertarian ticket. Gary Johnson and William Weld should call themselves the LINO team. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has pulled to within two points in a four-way matchup for New Hampshire, according to the latest Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll released on Wednesday. The two-point gap in the survey of 500 likely New Hampshire voters is well within the poll’s margin of error of 4.4 percent. Libertarian vice presidential candidate Bill Weld said he was inundated with dozens of phone calls and emails last week telling him to drop out of his campaign for the White House, after rumors were “planted” by Hillary Clinton’s team that he might drop out of the race and endorse Clinton. “Obviously the call had gone out from somewhere,” Weld, the former Massachusetts governor, said today during an appearance on Boston Herald Radio. “And I’ve got to think directly or indirectly, it’s from the Clinton campaign.”
