Joe Biden began unraveling a new agenda that makes the Democrat presidential nominee appear more similar to the socialist senators he faced in crowded primaries than the center-left “moderate” he portrays, which was always a myth to begin with. On Tuesday, Biden unveiled a new $775 billion proposal for government-run childcare with additional taxpayer programs for the elderly. The latest program comes just days after Biden announced a $2 trillion package to ensure “environmental justice” hashed out with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ team to pile onto the $7 trillion in spending already proposed, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis....

Friday in a preview an interview that will air Sunday, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pushed back on President Donald Trump’s claim that Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden does not support defunding police departments. (snip) Wallace said, “Liberal Democrats have been running cities in this country for decades.” Trump said, “Poorly.” Wallace said, “Why is it so bad right now?” Trump answered, “They run them poorly, it was always bad, but now it’s gotten totally out of control, and it’s really because they want to defund the police and Biden wants to defund the police.” Wallace interjected,...

Late Tuesday night, an anonymous party sent a Deadspin reporter four videos, which appeared to be a cell phone recording of a video feed, that shows ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, host of the afternoon NBA show The Jump, in a phone conversation with an unidentified man about personnel matters at the network. Nichols (whose face never appears on camera) and the other party to the call discuss Nichols’ career, ESPN staff, and the World Wide Leader’s decision about who will host the network’s coverage of the NBA Finals. In light of privacy concerns and our being unable to view the entirety...

A joint effort by former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to unify Democrats around Biden's candidacy has produced a 110-page policy wish list to recommend to the party's presumptive presidential nominee. Throughout the Democratic primary, Biden stuck to a more moderate platform, while Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and much of the rest of the crowded field courted progressives and advocated for broader structural changes. But as the United States faces a growing pandemic and unemployment rates at the highest levels in generations, Biden has been talking more and more about a presidency that approaches Franklin...

It is more than a possibility, and slightly less than a likelihood, that Joe Biden will be elected president in November. Biden has made it clear that a woman will be his running mate. What is becoming equally apparent is that he may be cornered into choosing a socialist or progressive as that person. As he runs his campaign from his basement, allowing President Trump to stomp his feet and shout as he tries to mount a more traditional campaign, Biden has shown little inclination to take on his own foot-stomping base. Thus the socialist/progressive wing of the Democratic Party...

A horrific week of violence in Boston — seven slayings in less than a week — led to calls on Sunday to end the bloodshed and for a serious investment in mental-health services in the city. A woman was shot to death early Sunday morning in Dorchester, according to police who reported the seventh killing in Boston since Tuesday. “It’s just absolutely terrible,” Mary Franklin, founder of the Women Survivors of Homicide Movement, told the Herald. “If our city would invest in serious mental-health services for poor communities, we would be able to decrease a lot of the crime and...

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that the structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is unconstitutional, determining that its head must be removable at the will of the president. The decision reduces the power of the agency, the brainchild of Elizabeth Warren, and is a victory for business groups. The court stopped short, though, of eliminating the bureau, as sought by conservatives. "The agency may therefore continue to operate, but its Director, in light of our decision, must be removable by the President at will," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the 5-4 majority. The decision agreed with a California-based...

I love Elizabeth Warren. She’s got the the intellectual breadth of a policy wonk; the strategic touch of a U.S. senator who’s served on banking, housing, health, education, labor and pensions committees; the gentle, no-nonsense grace of a longtime schoolteacher; a progressive agenda; boundless energy; a sly wit and an enormous heart.

Joe Biden has officially formed a transition team that will be led by former Delaware Sen. Ted Kaufman, a longtime Biden adviser who also led his transition as vice president in 2008, a Biden campaign aide confirmed to CNN. This team is a preliminary group that will focus on developing the infrastructure of the transition effort. The full rollout of the team is expected later this fall, the aide said, noting that the timing of today's announcement falls in line with the timeline of past non-incumbent candidates who developed a transition team.

Susan Rice, a former UN ambassador and national security advisor under President Barack Obama, has skyrocketed up the odds to be Joe Biden’s running mate. Rice is +650 in odds posted Sunday at 888sports' UK-facing betting site, the third choice just behind Florida Rep. Val Demings, who is at +550. California Sen. Kamala Harris remains the favorite at -134. That marks Harris' best odds ever. Ten days ago, Rice was +2500 to be Biden’s running mate before reports emerged that she was one of six women seen as serious contenders and on the short list.

Vice President Amy Klobuchar is not in the cards. The Minnesota senator withdrew her name from the list of possible running mates Thursday night, reasoning Democratic nominee Joe Biden should use the “moment to put a woman of color” on his ticket.

The nation’s largest abortion provider regularly claims that it provides “life-saving” services while highlighting “pro-life” abortionists. But as it continues toying with double entendres, Planned Parenthood’s language appears less as a mere coincidence and more as a blatant mockery of the pro-life movement. The latest example came on June 15, when Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the abortion giant’s political arm, announced its endorsement of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden as he challenges President Trump in the upcoming election. According to Planned Parenthood’s acting president, the November election will be a matter of “life and death.” Speaking with NPR, Alexis McGill...

It's impossible not to notice that the left has made a cottage industry out of trashing Republicans and conservatives as racists and "angry white guys" while elevating Democrats as the party of racial diversity. As the Washington Examiner pointed out, "Joe Biden's pledge to choose a woman as his running mate, and his consideration of several black female officeholders for the role, has spurred considerable chatter about diversity in the nation's second-highest office." Charles Curtis, a Republican, was the first individual "with acknowledged non-European ancestry" to become vice president, the outlet reported. Serving under Herbert Hoover from 1929 through 1933,...

This week, if there had been no pandemic, I would have been on leave, heading for Gettysburg in Pennsylvania - the site of the famous battle in the American Civil War of 1861-65. For some reason this conflict captured my interest as a child. I've always wanted to attend the Gettysburg College Civil War Institute's annual summer school. Sadly, that has been cancelled this year because of Covid-19. On frequent trips to the States, I used to buy a historical magazine about the war whose masthead slogan proclaimed: "For those who still hear the sound of the guns." This reference...

The Warren Amendment didn't just call changing the names of military bases. It called for the destruction of Confederate monuments inside military graveyards including Arlington Cemetery. During the voice vote, only Sens. Hawley and Cotton voiced opposition to the destruction of anything inside graveyards. Other Republicans on the committee were completely silent. Senate Republicans are now scrambling, believing Trump will veto the defense bill if it includes the Warren Amendment. The amendment was passed with a voice vote, so there's no record on how any individual senator voted. I was told, "this isn't the hill to die on"... I can't...

Washington — The Senate Armed Services Committee approved an amendment to the annual military spending bill that would require the Defense Department to change the names of military bases and assets named for Confederate leaders. A source familiar with the proceedings confirmed to CBS News that the GOP-led panel on Wednesday approved the amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) offered by Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts via voice vote. According to a summary of the NDAA released by the committee Thursday, the measure requires the Defense Department to rename posts and assets — streets, aircraft, ships, and...

Republican senators rebelled against Donald Trump late Wednesday by voting to tell the Army to rename bases named after Confederate generals within the next three years. The Armed Services Committee, whose members include Trump ultra-loyalist Tom Cotton, voted behind closed doors for the move, Roll Call first reported. The voice vote was on an amendment to the annual Pentagon policy bill — the Defense Authorization Act — which was put forward by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and former presidential candidate. It came hours after Donald Trump tweeted furiously that he will “not even consider” renaming Forts Bragg, Hood,...

A former national surrogate for Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., ripped into white congressional Democrats on Monday after they wore African-patterned garb and knelt in a demonstration against racism and police brutality. "I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that they draped these white people in kente cloth to 'honor' him. This has to be hell," author Frederick Joseph tweeted, also arguing that black Americans are "being pandered to, and ultimately, disrespected." In a tweet thread, he argued that Democrats were failing in their attempts to be helpful amid ongoing strife surrounding George Floyd's death. He specifically took aim...
