Bedford state Rep. Dan Hynes has left the Republican Party over what he says is its abandonment of conservative principles, in particular his opposition to the GOP’s embrace of the Parents Bill of Rights. By changing his party status to “undeclared/independent,” Hynes reduced the size of the GOP majority to 199-196-2 and two vacancies left to fill, exposing yet again how narrowly Republicans are clinging to power in the closely-divided body. We are all used to hearing political candidates make campaign trail promises. Usually the promises are benign enough, big on rhetoric and lacking on details. Candidates announce public policy ideas that most anyone can agree with at some level. This is understandable; they want to attract as many voters as possible and don’t want to alienate any voting block. Rarely, if ever, would a politician promise something detrimental, like a tax hike. <p>WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A powerful state government employees union has endorsed Democrat Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama's bid to become a U.S. senator.</p> <p>The union, Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, represents nearly 100,000 state and municipal workers throughout Illinois. The AFSCME local threw its support to Obama just days after the Illinois AFL-CIO endorsed state Comptroller Dan Hynes in the March 16 Democratic primary.</p>
