The world just experienced its hottest January on record, continuing a run of exceptional heat fuelled by climate change, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said on Thursday (Feb 8). Last month surpassed the previous warmest January, which occurred in 2020, in C3S's records going back to 1950. The exceptional month came after 2023 ranked as the planet's hottest year in global records going back to 1850, as human-caused climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon, which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, pushed temperatures higher.

62% of motorists have cut back on driving due to the cost of fuel, and motorists spend an average of €220 per month on vehicle running costs, according to a new report by Carzone, the online car marketplace. In its 2024 motoring report, which is based on a survey of 1000 motorists and activity on the website, it finds 38% of motorists have or plan to reduce the number of cars in their households to cut back on costs. 47% of respondents said their car insurance premiums rose in the last 12 months, which is up 11% on the previous...

Plastics producers have promoted recycling their products as an environmental solution for decades despite firsthand knowledge that it was not feasible, according to a report published Thursday. More than 99 percent of plastics are produced using fossil fuels, and of these, the vast majority cannot be “recycled” in the sense of being processed and turned into entirely new products, according to the report from the Center for Climate Integrity. Viable end markets, or businesses that buy recyclables to make new products, only exist for polyethylene terephthalate and high-density polyethylene plastic containers, according to the report. Environmental Protection Agency materials have...

Mayor Eric Adams said he’d consider property tax breaks for middle-class co-op and condo owners who have to pay for pricey building upgrades when a new “green” mandate icks in. Hizzoner said he was open to tax abatements as anxious residents brace for the costs of Local Law 97, which covers 800,000 co-op and condo apartments. “My second apartment was a co-op,” Adams said during testimoney in Albany on the state budget last week.

A breakthrough moment for sustainable aviation fuel / Depositphotos A simple, cheap pretreatment promises to radically cut the price of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from waste wood biomass – potentially making it cost-competitive with fossil-based jet fuel, while cutting down emissions by up to 80%. SAF isn't a perfect green solution to aviation – indeed, no perfect solution exists at this point. Running SAF instead of jet fuel still produces carbon dioxide – but it's a higher-purity fuel, producing up to 3% more energy while burning cleaner, with heavily reduced sulfur and particulate emissions. It eliminates the entire emissions...

In November, Orsted nixed two major wind farm projects planned off the coast of New Jersey, citing the same problems that the company cited for the Skipjack Wind project.. Danish wind developer Orsted has canceled another contract on a planned offshore wind farm in the Atlantic Ocean. The company said the 966-megawatt Skipjack Wind project, planned to be constructed off the coasts of Delaware and Maryland, would no longer be commercially viable at the contract prices due to inflation, high interest rates and supply chain issues. “Today’s announcement affirms our commitment to developing value creating projects and represents an opportunity...

A Quebec man has just been found guilty of starting fourteen forest fires in Canada last year. Brian Paré, 38, pleaded guilty to starting the fires which the corporate media and green agenda advocates blamed on “climate change.” At a courthouse in central Quebec, Paré pleaded guilty to 13 counts of arson and one count of arson with disregard for human life, according to CBC. When he was eventually apprehended, he told police he started the fires to check if the forest was dry or not. The pyromaniac’s arsonist spree began in May and lasted through September. Colorado continues to grow warmer as a result of climate change, leading to increased risks of wildfires and extreme drought, according to Colorado State University and the Colorado Climate Center. For the first time since 2014, the Colorado Climate Center released a state report, updating residents on the progression of climate change in Colorado and the potential impacts it may have in the years ahead. "Since the last report we have had some major significant events," said Becky Bolinger, assistant state climatologist and professor at CSU. Since the 1970s, Colorado has warmed more than 1.5 degrees. Though that may seem...

Workers at Tara Mines in County Meath have been asked by the company to express their interest in a proposed voluntary severance scheme. Staff at Europe’s largest zinc mine were today updated by management on its plans to reopen the facility outside Navan in the second quarter of this year. The site was placed under care and maintenance last June, with 650 workers temporarily laid off. At the time, the company said it took the decision in response to unsustainable losses, and cited a decline in the price of zinc, high energy costs and inflation as some of the reasons...

A little-known judicial advocacy organization funded by left-wing nonprofits is quietly training judges nationwide on preparing for cases related to climate change, according to a Fox News Digital review. The Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Law Institute (ELI) created the Climate Judiciary Project (CJP) in 2018, establishing a first-of-its-kind resource to provide “reliable, up-to-date information” about climate change litigation, according to the group. The project’s reach has extended to various state and federal courts, including powerful appellate courts, and comes as various cities and states pursue high-profile litigation against the oil industry. “As the body of climate litigation grows, judges must consider...

On last Monday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Co.,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said that he doubts “that Americans in 2050 are still going to be driving that old technology, that combustion technology that we inherited from the 20th century.” Buttigieg said, “[T]he share of EVs has been dramatically increasing every single year, and that’s continuing. Now, our goal is, by the end of this decade, to be about half-and-half. We think that that can and will happen. But what isn’t guaranteed is, first of all, is that EV revolution going to continue to be made in...

Far-left Axios is gushing over a new study that blames climate change for people fleeing Democrat-run cities like the “metro areas of Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Washington, D.C. (specifically, Alexandria, Va.).” “Climate migration is already taking place within American communities, new data finds, as people flee flood-prone areas, and create ‘climate abandonment’ zones,” writes an unquestioning Axios. “The study constitutes the latest warning sign of the effects of climate change,” Axios continues without skepticism. “Population shifts, and a larger reckoning for real estate, are only expected to worsen as global average surface temperatures rise.” But then the premise of the study...

Is it time for change at the UN? A recent petition has stirred global attention, calling for Greta Thunberg’s appointment as the UN Ambassador for Climate Action. Love her or loathe her, you can’t ignore her, she’s instantly recognisable and everyone knows where she stands on environmental issues. Greta Thunberg, the 20-year-old Swedish climate activist came to prominence in 2018, when as a schoolgirl she went ‘on strike’ from school to raise awareness of the planet’s climate crisis. Since then she has become a global icon, a champion for many activists around the world, with the power to muster protests...

A donor-advised fund devoted to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has leapt from being a relatively minor charity to one with an asset size comparable to behemoths like the Andrew W. Mellon and David and Lucile Packard foundations. The SDG Impact Fund, based in Cartersville, Georgia, grew from $238 million in assets in 2020 to $10 billion in 2021. That eye-popping growth, which seems to have been fueled by the meteoric rise of cryptocurrencies and digital art assets, has prompted some questions from philanthropy and tax experts. The less stringent legal reporting requirements for DAFs compared with private...
