Four Miami-area residents were killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 on Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The wreck occurred at 7:10 a.m. when a Ford SUV driven by Rolandson Ceinor of Lauderdale Lakes, traveling west at Mile Marker 60, approached a Chevrolet SUV driven by Ramona Sabal-Varro, 49, of Miami. Both vehicles were in the passing lane. Ceinor, no age listed in police reports, failed to slow down as he approached Sabal-Varro's car and collided with the rear of the vehicle, sending Sabal-Varro's vehicle crashing into an emergency call box, troopers reported. Sabal-Varro's vehicle then overturned, ejecting...

FRIDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 1720: The bodies of 79 victims have been identified, says a North Ossetian security official. 1700: Emergencies ministry official says 646 people, including 227 children, are in hospital, reports Itar-Tass news agency. 1608: Interfax news agency cites presidential aide as saying total number...

Carnage amid Najaf peace mission It was unclear who carried out the Kufa attacks Top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani has begun a peace mission to the Iraqi city of Najaf, hours after attacks in nearby Kufa left at least 74 dead. About 315 people apparently obeying the ayatollah's call to march on Najaf were also hurt, the health ministry said. The main Kufa mosque was hit by mortar shells and gunfire was also reported. Ayatollah Sistani's representatives have contacted representatives of militants in Najaf who have been in a three-week standoff with US-led forces. On Wednesday he had returned...

HAMISH ROBERTSON: Well staying in the United States, Anti-gun campaigners are concerned about a worrying trend in which charity groups and fundraisers are using guns as prizes in raffles. A volunteer fire brigade has set a new benchmark with its raffle, giving away a gun every day for the entire year. It says it needs the cash to continue operating, but many are wondering whether America, a nation already saturated with guns, needs anymore. Lisa Millar compiled this report. (sound of cars passing by) LISA MILLAR: A few hours drive west of Washington DC lies Emmitsburg, Maryland, which gets its...
