Between 1957 and 1987, as many as 1 million Marines, their families and on-base civilians drank and washed, bathed and played in water contaminated with dry-cleaning fluids and industrial solvents at levels as high as 40 times today's safe standard. But more than 25 years since the contamination was discovered, scientific proof remains elusive as to whether the cornucopia of pollutants caused health problems in those who were exposed. Thursday, a 14-member committee from the National Research Council, the operational arm of the National Academies, will visit Jacksonville for a "ground-truthing" session. The committee is looking into potential adverse health...

RAWAH, Iraq (March 7, 2007) -- In a town set on the Euphrates River, 150 miles northwest of Baghdad, two Marines stood calmly as a group of local Iraqi men surrounded them. Although Marines from the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion had posted security up and down the street in the city of roughly 30,000 people, ready for any situation, Maj. Sean Quinlan’s hands weren’t anywhere near his own weapon. Instead, his hands were gripping those of the elderly men around him in friendly greeting. Mostly former school teachers, the Iraqi’s told Quinlan, the commanding officer for...

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – (March 16, 2006) -- More than 15 Marines squirmed in their seats, waiting eagerly in a computer room, scattered amongst circular tables, as Miss USA, Chelsea S. Cooley, finally appeared through the double doors of the Injured Support Unit barracks Monday. Pete D. Dmitruk, an infantryman with 1st platoon, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment. Dmitruk pulled...

Kramer, a Marine with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, this was an all too familiar scene having been deployed three times in the last two years. The Pittsburgh, Penn. native deployed to Haiti from March...
