Earlier this year, a four-page document with a bland title, "Stipulation for Dismissal with Prejudice," was filed in a civil matter percolating on the King County Courthouse's ninth floor. Hardly anyone took notice. Most everyone had moved on. But that document — filed by lawyers tangled up in the estate of Stuart Greenberg, a nationally renowned psychologist whose life ended in scandal — signaled the end of a tortuous undertaking. Greenberg had proved such a toxic force — a poison coursing through the state's court system — that it took more than three years for lawyers and judges to sift...

Reporting from North Las Vegas, Nev.— Charles Mills can barely afford to stay here. But he also can't afford to move. That's why the 44-year-old heavy-equipment operator was preparing to leave his wife and young daughter here and go where he could find work — the Oklahoma oil fields. Mills has a mortgage to pay, even if its size pains him. He purchased his house in 2006 for $308,500. Current value: $105,797. "We talked about it: What can we do with the house?" Mills said. "Nobody's going to buy it. Nobody's going to rent it. If we walk away, my...

Wondering about going galt. I have a car and a truck, both very old (early-to-mid 1990) probably each with book value less that $1k. I don't drive that much. Take the bus to work for the most part. I'm a renter - rent a house. I have cable/Internet, and land-line at home. I have a 'professional' private sector job, but I work from January to May for the Government. Things I already do: service my own vehicles, take the bus to work, keep thermostat at 58 degrees, small vegetable garden in summer. I have as much consumer crap as any...
