Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Department of Defense (DoD) has not had to consider the possibility of great power competition, crisis, or direct armed conflict with a nuclear-capable peer. Unfortunately, the current environment no longer affords us that luxury. The implications of today’s competition and the associated risk of great power crisis or direct armed conflict are profound; they affect nearly every fundamental assumption we make about the use of armed force in the defense of the nation and its allies.

POLICE have shot a man who sparked a terror alert near Spain’s border with France by shouting "Allahu Akbar" at a motorway checkpoint. Officers opened fire on the man, believed to be a Frenchman of north African origin, after he began to shout in Arabic when the vehicle he was travelling in was intercepted at a motorway toll near La Jonquera on the Spanish side of the border. He was hit in the leg and rushed to a nearby hospital after the incident around midnight last night. Local reports said officers ordered him out of the car he was in...

Russia has been hit by a wave of reports of a giant UFO in the sky last night with spectacular pictures of an enormous glowing ball illuminating northern Siberia. Social media erupted with claims of 'aliens arriving' and locals in far flung parts of the country told of 'shivers down their spines'. While the source of the light remains unclear, some have suggested that it was the the trace of a rocket launched by the Russian military that caused this extraordinary phenomenon in the night sky. Vasily Zubkov posted: 'I went out to smoke a cigarette and thought it was...

A British local newspaper received an anonymous call about "some big news" in the US, shortly before President John F Kennedy was assassinated, according to documents. A memo dated 26 November 1963 said the call was made to the Cambridge News at 18:05 GMT on 22 November 1963. This was 25 minutes before Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas. A copy of the memo was released by the National Archives in the US in July, but had gone unreported. It was revealed again when the latest batch of documents relating to the assassination were released on Thursday.

North Korea has warned that the US faces an 'unimaginable strike at an unimaginable time' in a new threat likely to further destabilise peace in the region. A statement from North Korea's Pan-Korean Emergency Measure Committee for Opposing Nuclear War Drills said: 'The US is running amok by introducing under our nose the targets we have set as primary ones. 'The US should expect that it will face an unimaginable strike at an unimaginable time.' On Monday, the United States and South Korea launched a joint naval exercise in a fresh show of force against North Korea over its growing...
  • Report: Massive morale problems aboard US Navy ship

Morale aboard a US warship operating in the Pacific reached such a low ebb that one sailor described serving aboard the ship as being akin to being on "a floating prison," according to surveys obtained via the Freedom of Information Act. The Navy Times obtained three command climate surveys featuring hundreds of pages of anonymous comments from sailors revealing widespread morale issues aboard the USS Shiloh, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser based in Yokosuka, Japan. Two Navy officials told CNN that the information reported from the surveys was accurate. According to the obtained surveys only 31% of the sailors who responded...

Defense Secretary James Mattis told the US Army it “must stand ready” and have military options “our president can deploy” in case diplomacy fails to solve the standoff with increasingly belligerent North Korea. “There’s one thing the U.S. Army can do, and that is you have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our president can employ if needed,” Mattis told the Association of the US Army’s annual meeting in Washington, DC, on Monday, according to The Hill. “But that means the U.S. Army must stand ready, and so, if you’re ready, that’s your duty...

They said a police officer controlling traffic at a Canadian Football League game was struck by a car at high speed and then attacked with a knife. A man driving a van went on to hit at least four pedestrians and was arrested two hours later after a police chase. Police said an Islamic State (IS) group flag was found in one of the vehicles. Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht said the officer and his vehicle were rammed by...
  • Mexico rocked by 6.1 magnitude earthquake aftershock

An aftershock with a magnitude of 6.1 has hit Mexico, just days after a devastating tremor left 295 people dead. The US Geological Survey said it was centred about 11 miles (18km) from the town of Matias Romero in the southern state of Oaxaca. Mexico's National Seismological Service recorded thousands of aftershocks just in the first nine and a half hours of Saturday, some of which measured 4.0 or greater. Details on damage or injuries are not immediately clear, but Mexico City Mayor Miguel Mancera said residents were already on edge since last week's quake.
  • Trump’s plan to end DACA could lead to influx of ‘Dreamers’ in Canada

President Donald Trump's threat to end protections for those who entered the U.S. illegally as children could spark a new wave of immigration and asylum requests, some analysts warn. If that happens, they say, Canada's already stressed systems would come under further pressure and potentially intensify a backlash against newcomers. About 1.7 million illegal migrants to the United States – the vast majority of them Mexicans – are either registered or qualify for registration under a five-year-old policy called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA. The program, which Trump wants ended, allows them to obtain work permits and protects...

President Trump faced something different while attending the U.S. Women's Open at his golf course in Bedminster, N.J. — a tiny and polite protest. In fact the three women and one man wearing purple t-shirts reading, "USGA, Dump Sexist Trump," simply stared at the president once he arrived a little after 3 p.m and then gave up less than an hour later to get some ice cream, according to the White House pool report. It didn't appear that Trump, wearing a campaign "Make America Great Again" hat and who also attended Saturday's tournament, saw the protesters, apparently part of the...
  • EMERGENCY SERVICES THOUGHT GERMAN MAN WAS JOKING WHEN HE CALLED TO SAY HIS GIRLFRIEND, 23, WAS BEING

A major shake up is underway in Germany after police refused to take seriously a 999 call from a young man who called in to say his girlfriend was being raped yards from him. The officer who took the call did not believe the desperate man on the other end of the line, and said: 'You are not messing with me I hope?' The terrified boyfriend had been threatened with a machete when the Ghanaian refugee entered the tent he shared with his girlfriend at a campsite near Bonn and told to remain where he was.

  • Editorial Donald Trump's train-wreck presidency

    04/02/2017 6:17:33 AM PDT · by traumer · 21 replies
It was no secret during the campaign that Donald Trump was a narcissist and a demagogue who used fear and dishonesty to appeal to the worst in American voters. The Times called him unprepared and unsuited for the job he was seeking, and said his election would be a “catastrophe.” Still, nothing prepared us for the magnitude of this train wreck. Like millions of other Americans, we clung to a slim hope that the new president would turn out to be all noise and bluster, or that the people around him in the White House would act as a check...

Five people are said to have been killed after gunmen opened fire in a mosque in Quebec City, Canada, during evening prayers. The mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui, confirmed the death toll and described the attack as "barbaric". Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter: "Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families." A witness said that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre. Another witness said a heavily armed police tactical squad was seen...
