  • Orange Growers Irked by Low-Carb Diets

Not everyone can handle the same load of carbohydrates, particularly the concentrated sugars in fruit juices. I am one of those people. It has been a very long time since I drank orange juice and ate an orange. My son bought a house with many orange trees on it, and to my dismay I won't be able to eat them. :(
  • What is a conservative? (Why Williams may not become a Republican, says the naive idealist)

Debate within the party is one thing. To sabotage the party and hand things freely over to the 'RATS is yet another. I'll be voting GOP in 2004 all the way !! Handing things over to the Democrats has never been better illustrated in the last California Governor's race. The purist conservatives voted their conscience for Paul Simon, (an inept cadidate) over Reardon,(a RINO) who could have beaten Davis and now look what a mess we are in. I examined my conscience and I went practical. I voted for Reardon, a lot it did me. Folks, it is winning the race that sets the agenda for the state or the country. Political weapons have to be used in a practical manner. That doesn't mean the GOP candidate is a lost soul if he runs on a platform that isn't totally close to the party platform. Arnold, ''The Terminator'', Swartznegger, isn't my candidate of choice. But, if Arnold can win the election over Gov Davis, I will vote for him. I just wish the GOP party would train up potential candidates with all the money they have coming in. Who runs this party anyway? California is a huge state and all they could come up with is Paul Simon and now Arnold. We need Ben Stein!! It is important to keep the GOP platform pure, but, candidates need to defeat the Demorats with all the power of a ''Daisy Cutter'' Suck the oxygen away from them. Neutralize the Clintons. I believe our president George W. Bush has done just that. War is war and we are at war folks.

There is a movement to recall Gov Davis by a Republican congressman from Vista, CA named Darrell Issa. He is interested in becoming Gov of CA and using his own money to get this recall off the ground. He is also of Lebonese descent and has gone to the mid-east on junkets to talk to leaders there. He is a self made millionaire in the car security business. He is handsome and articulate but, I am still leery of his motives. He is serving his 2nd term in the House. If we had a choice between Arnold and Darrell Issa, I am sure Rep Issa will win. But, I would like to know more about his motives.....BTW would Arnold make a good Governor of CA? I kind of doubt it. He has a lot of baggage to carry around for opponents to dig up ...like the rumor he is a womanizer.

Michael Savage just happened to come on the radio when I went to my computer. He was complaining about his mother not watching his TV show. She isn't alone, because, I cannot stand watching his TV show nor listen to his radio show. I don't care for his style and he isn't a conservative. A conservative has more patience in the area of ideas or the court of public opinion. He sounds like he has too much hate in him and makes conservatives look bad. What do you suppose his brand of politics is called? Maybe Hard core rightwinger would fit better. He and Hillary are about to shake hands on the political sprectrum.

Iraq's liberation was brought about, Nasir wrote with deep gratitude, "by young men and women who came from the other side of the world -- from California and Wyoming, from New York, Glasgow, London, Sydney and Gdansk to risk their lives, and for some to die, so that my people can live in dignity." I think he left out the most important region for heroic soldiers and that is the American south. Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and all the other states who have sons and daughters in the military. New York City would be my last choice to harbor patriotic soldiers....

We don't have any idea what's happening in Iraq, though we have troops there still in danger So true!! I hope you caught 20/20 last night the great segment on Bremer who appears to be doing a terrific job in Iraq. It was such a positive piece. I want to see more news from Baghdad, even if it is bad news like the sex torture pictures taken by a British soldier in Iraq.

I was thoroughly hooked on the OJ case. I knew everything by not missing one day. It was during the hot summer season and I was glued to the TV only going out at noon time break to shop for groceries. (I noticed the market was busy at that time too LOL.)
I vowed to myself, I will never get addicted to a case like that again. It was too emotionally draining. I had to eat those words when locally we had the Westerfield trial. I watched the trial daily. When one is familiar with the area, it brings it closer to home. Scott was picked up at a familiar spot, which also brings his case closer to home. If there is a televised trial(which I pray won't happen) I am afraid I am too weak to resist watching. The media creates the addiction and it takes a strong resolve not to get sucked in. Proud of all of you who shut off your TV or switch to other channels for entertaiment.

But them again creeps like Geraldo, Greta, and Mark Fuhrman have built careers on appealing to the lowest cultural common denominator. Don't forget Rita Cosby. She is building a career on these type of stories. A good reporter like she is shouldn't be going down this road. Abrams is another such reporter. I agree with some freepers, that even Fox News is sinking into the pit of gossip and sensationalism. Could it be caused by the news reporters Roger Ailes is importing from the loser networks. Let us face it, news has become entertainment and news junkies like us, have to get our news from the internet. I agree with Drudge, the internet is changing TV and newspaper reporting.

I am weary of this story. No matter what breaking news comes out concerning this case, I am SICK of it.

I am returning to c-span, or the movie channels for alternative entertainment. Caught Naill Ferguson, author of "Empire" last night on c-span II. A very compelling author, historian and speaker. I didn't agree with a word he said about America being an Empire. To me the word means land grabber ala Russia and HItler's Germany. America only wants peace for the world and plants its military there to protect those who cannot be protected. All countries who expelled the British and America, have not prospered. The Anglo nations bring stability and prosperity to those nations. Anyway, he gave me a lot of food for thought. Better than being brain mushed by the News Networks concerning Laci and Conner's fate.

What's with the phoney mohawk look? She needs to bring attention to herself me thinks. I hope that all of those things are the opposite of that, but the one thing that bothered me the most was if any of the troops thought we didn't support them, because we do." I hate this comment. HOw can one support the troops if you bad mouth their commander-in-chief whom they love and admire. What a stupid chick!! I am happy to see the negative backlash created by her stupid remarks.
  • Two New Studies Back Claims of Atkins Diet (Ruben "Round Mound of Sound" Studdard Alert)

My husband has been on Atkins since January and dropped 30lbs. For him it is easy to follow. He is a meat, salad and potatoes guy and all he does is drop the (hot)potato.
Instead of a baked potato, I pan fry italian squash in olive oil. Microwave broccoli and make a cheese sauce with soy flour. Stir fried veggies are great too.
He gets his tomatoes and avocadoes with the salad and any other veggie he likes, like red cabbage, onions and cukes.
We do eat more beef, but, he has always liked steak, ground beef, chicken, pork and roasts. For a change of pace, I make a beef neck bone soup with garlic and whole pureed tomatoes and celery. I chop 1/2 a carrot and a handful of frozen peas to make it seem normal. Meat balls without bread crumbs are great simmering in the broth. He gives it a kick with tobasco sauce or any hot sauce. A heart warming meal on a cold chilly night. A handful of pork rinds (yuck) simulates crackers. He has very little hunger pangs and doesn't crave sweets at all. I make a ground beef spaghetti sauce and omit any sugar with splenda. He loves it over his chicken, steak or pork chops. For dessert, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with sliced stawberries sweetened with splenda and a mock chocolate and rasberry sunday made with heavy cream ''sugar free'' pudding. Who says one has to eat only meat all day. Hard cheese and eggs can be fixed in many delicious ways. Read the book and use the imagination and meals can be very exciting. **Warning** avoid the Atkins pancakes and maple syrup stuff...yuck. There is only one side effect, parties, weddings and family get togethers. It is so tempting to eat just one carb. That one carb can throw the burning process for a few days. When you know this, you really don't eat it. Forgive my enthusiasm of the Atkins diet..........

Apparently an old news article from Drudge.

Virtue may be its own reward, but cold, hard cash never hurts. Moralcrat Bill Bennett wandered into a Las Vegas casino after giving one of his standard America-is-going-to-hell-in-a-handbasket speeches, when bingo, the Book of Virtues author hit the jackpot. A sheepish Bennett wouldn't say how much he won ($60,000, says a friend) or how long he played, but did want to explain: "I'm against state expansion of gambling, state advertising encouraging people to gamble, and gambling as a way to make a living. But adults on their own time...," etc., etc. Proceeds went to charity.
