  • Obama's quandary: Wear a helmet, look dumb or be a role model?

I wonder if he wears some kind of bowling helmet when he bowls? He surely couldn’t look any worse than that 30 something he bowled.

I think you meant to post to don-o

I don't know anything about cockpit rules or silence during the takeoff roll. I flew as often as I could in the cocpit while I was in the navy. I don't remember any talking during takeoff roll except for calling out the "V" stuff. I had not really thought about it before now.

Taking off without runway lights is puzzling. I don't know the reason for that, without at least asking the tower about it.

I suppose it could be distraction. As a controller, it seems as if the least busy times were the most dangerous. We controllers back then were no as observant and became distracted at times. I can remember one time in particular that our tower crew was very lucky that a tragedy didn't occur. I would suppose that happens with flight crews too. It is easier to stay on your toes during busy, stressful times.

I don't know if this is the place for this. I am certainly from an "old school", I reckon. I became a controller more 44 years ago. One thing that was drilled into me was that it is almost always a chain of events that result in the accident. If one event in that chain of events doesn't happen, then most likely the accident doesn't happen.

Just going from memory, it seems that the chain usually had 3 main events. It was impressed on me, never to let that first event happen.

I don't know what happened here. It seems that the flight crew did some things wrong, resulting in taking off on the wrong runway. Perhaps the controller did something wrong or was unable to stop it. I believe the construction and new configuration is also a factor in this.

Any one of those things doesn't happen ............ perhaps the accident doesn't happen.

This is a terrible thing to happen. All have my prayers.

I'm not used to posting and addressed my previous post to CedarDave. I meant to just post a general post.

Something else that was on my mind that I forgot in my other post. The new construction and configuration would probably be new to the tower controller too.

This could have been the first time the controller saw it, or the first time the controller saw it at night. Even if it wasn't the first time the controller saw it ........... it would still be somewhat new to the controller.

I don't know how different that would look from the tower.

I am not trying to make any excuses from anyone. It's just that I have no experience as a pilot and a bunch of years as a controller and know a little bit more about the controller aspect.

I am a former Navy and FAA air traffic controller. That was a long time ago and I'm not sure if many of the old ways are still practiced.

When I was a controller, it was common practice to give clearance for takeoff en route to the runway. Sting 11 verifies this practice is still done. I would be very surprised if prior takeoff clearance was not given in this instance.

I agree with Painful, another air traffic controller, that there was probably only one controller in the tower. Two controllers would have been much better. I have seen many times when something didn't "look quite right" to another controller and was brought to the attention of another.

I live 50 miles from LEX but have not been to the airport. I have tried to picture in my mind how the end of those two runways appear from the tower in the dark. They appear awfully close to me ............ one easily mistaken for the other.

I think I have read every thread here and only some of the coverage on TV. When I was a controller, a special weather observation was taken anytime their was an aircraft accident. I haven't seen this one, if it was performed. I wonder if there may have been visibility problems for the flight crew, or the controller because of rain showers.

I thank you folks for the welcome.

I'm sorry that I'm so late replying, I was out of town all day yesterday and didn't get back 'til the wee hours this morning.

This surely is a fine bunch of grateful, gracious and generous folks that take of their time to make the Canteen a great place to visit

I've lurked so long it seems as if I know you all. Thanks.

    Hi

I had to go to Tennessee Tuesday and just got back. The name of the book is: "The 84th Infantry Division in the Battle of Germany. November 1944 -- May 1945. By Lt. Theodore Draper. Originally published 1946. The one I have is an expanded reprint edition.

My dad had the edition from 1946. If I remember correctly, it didn't have a roster in it.

I got this one from a seller on Amazon.com for $39.95 plus $3.49 shipping and handling. I think it is well worth it.

I don't know how to link on here so I'll e-mail a link or address to you to you.

Thanks. One day I might try to learn how to do the pictures or links.

There's been a lot of military service in the family; 7 uncles, dad, 2 brothers, my 2 sons and even me.

I was an Air Controlman in the Navy for 8 years.

My uncle, Roy, was killed during WWII when the bomber he was in ran out of fuel and crashed into the Adriatic Sea.

Thanks for the welcome Mr. Tonk. I guess I should have had better manners and addressed everyone that keeps the canteen going, but the address would have filled a page.

The "Canteen" has sure given me a lot of pleasure.

    Hi viligantcitizen.

I've been a lurker for quite a while, not much for talking.

I noticed a while back from your grandpa's picture that he was in the 84th Infantry Division. My dad was in the 84th also, at the same time.

I don't know if they knew each other as your grandpa was a "medic" and my dad was a rifleman.

I bought a book a couple of months ago that has the roster of the 84th Infantry Division in it. I don't know whether that would help.

I sure do hope that I did this html stuff right, I would hate to have all of those fine folks that spend all that time making this canteen possible mad at me.
