    Folks,

Some of you misunderstood what Evan said in his presentation at the Heritage Foundation.

First of all, yes Evan is a comedian, but his presentation on "How Modern Liberals Think' is serious, deadly serious for those who are hurt by Liberal mentality.

I have read this fellow's writings on TCS for some time, and he has a bizarrely extreme attitude on open borders. He calls illegal immigrants his 'neighbors', and complains about the INS, and people like Tom Tancredo 'harrassing' them!

I say this fellow needs to get some new neighbors, if he is so upset by people who believe in the concept of sovereignty, by LEAVING THE COUNTRY!

    RonDog,
I think you already mentioned him, but more mention should be made of Bucky, an attendee at the taping and party. As you mentioned, it was Bucky who picked up the dinner tab for the Navy Corpsman and three Marines who were our guests. I talked with him, and he would like people to know about some of the causes he supports here in the San Fernando Valley.
If you saw the show, at one point you can hear someone in the audience yell very distinctly. That 'Go Ann' was from my good friend Bucky! His voice is on more radio and tv clips than I can remember!
He is a real patriot; an AF veteran, (ex-MP in the K-9 Corps) and Sergeant at Arms at his American Legion Post.
He formed a group that has organized Support the Troops rallies EVERY WEEKEND since March, 2003! Bucky and his group, Citizens for Homeland Defense, always need help at these rallies. Here's info he wants everyone to know:
,Here is the “Support the Troops Rally” information: we have flags and signs, just show up. We will meet at our usual place, the corner of Victory and Topanga Canyon Blvd. on Sunday night at 5:30 PM FOR OUR SUPPORT OUR TROOPS RALLY.
    Bring your signs and enthusiasm
    Bucky
He is also a major volunteer for Operation Gratitude,
    http://www.opgratitude.com/
Carolyn Blashek's volunteer organization that just this weekend finished sending it's 150,000th (!) care package to our troops fighting overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan and all over the world.
He has worked hard for conservative candidates, and personally gathered over 15,000 signatures in our attempt to keep the Cross on the LA County Seal.
Bucky is one of my heroes, and a conservative legend here in the San Fernando Valley!
P.S. He's also a great dancer! You should have seen him get up on stage at the Tonight Show and dance before the taping as part of the crowd warm-up! Too bad they didn't tape that!

"The audience was apparently heavy with Coulter fans, because all of the anti-Bush jokes in Leno's monologue fell flat."

I don't think that is true. I agree that no one sitting around me in the upper stands really caught on to Leno's "I'm going up to read" joke, mostly because that part of the audience couldn't hear it. Jay has a tendency to almost mumble, and while you can hear him on-camera, if you're in the studio audience, depending upon where you're sitting, it can be hard to hear. Actually that joke is pretty funny.

The other 'anti'-Bush joke that wasn't hilarious was the one about 'gay marriages' in Iraq. It was just amusing. (I give my reason at the end of this post.)

The others, I thought, were pretty funny: about Bush having to sneak back INTO the US, about him being an 'undocumented leader', and about Bush cancelling Rove's hunting trip with Dick Cheney. I liked those jokes! But of course, the ones about Democrats were even more hilarious! After all, all good humor has some basis in reality.

    RonDog,

I'm willing to give Carlin the benefit of the doubt. It WAS cold in that studio, and he was lightly dressed, so it's plausible that he was actually warming his hands.

It could easily have been symbolic as well, but overall, I think he was relatively well-behaved, and he was very polite to Ann, continually conversing with her during the breaks when everyone was standing around waiting for the musical act. I expected worse, and I think liberals did, too, judging from posts I saw at DU.

    DC Patriot,

Thanks for responding and being open and willing to discuss this topic, because I believe it needs to the be the subject of her next book: the big failure of most christians to truly live out their faith, as opposed to simply having a nominal faith.

The examples you cited were all of people who, I would suggest, rather than following Christianity to an extreme, hijacked the term Christianity, and misused it for their own personal ends.

Koresh and Jones were obviously on power trips. They broke every single commandment of the New Testament, and disregarded (sadly, so did their followers) all of Paul's, Peter's and John's warnings to be on the guard against false prophets and spreaders of evil teachings.

As for Henry VIII, he was just into having a lot of wives, supposedly so he could get a son, and the Catholic Church stood in the way. I suppose he also liked the idea of having all that church income go to HIM rather than to Rome.

I think that's the key: when evil things have been done in the name of Christianity, it is by people who are most definitely NOT 'extreme' or fundamentalist Christians, but who are people seeking after some worldly and decidedly un-christian goal.

Whereas, as my coptic friends have told me, a good muslim is one who neglects his religion; a devoutly religious muslim IS a terrorist, by definition, and in practice.

That 'post' about Ann and the comments of some AIR AMERICA female radio host is just ridiculous.

It's obvious if you read the transcript from Tucker Carlson's show that this woman just threw out a throw-away line for a cheap laugh, and it wasn't that funny. Tucker Carlson just ignored what she said, it was so bad.

Someone posted that link, I believe in this thread; read the transcript and you'll see.

Don't fall for the favorite leftist tactic of attacking the personal lives of conservatives; funny how it is liberals who like to 'out' people, even those that CAN'T be outed!

Sorry, I didn't mean to be so obtuse.

I was just trying to be humorous.

My point is just that whether people behave properly towards others comes comes down to the mechanism that control their behavior.

Using your principle, it seems to me that ultimately it comes down to a question of fear of what the other person will do to me; that is the motivation for my good behavior.

My concern is what if my neighbor isn't worried about what I'll do to him, because he is 6'8", 280, has LOTS of weapons (that is, more and bigger ones than me) and belongs to a motorcycle club? I don't think his concern for what I can do to him will necessarily be enough to deter him from treating me badly, if it is in his interest or desire to do so.

Yes, the police and civil law are a deterrant, but judging from our prisons, not a completely effective one for many people.

I would argue that what prevents more abuse of weaker neighbors by stronger ones is something more than just sheer deterrence. I think it is the fact that so many people people believe that there is such a thing as right and wrong, apart from the law. And this sense, I would argue, is where 'religion' comes in, although not necessarily in the form of organized religions or churches.
Let me leave it at that.

I hope my post hasn't offended you. It was not my intention to, in the slightest. The points you made intrigued me, and I felt compelled to respond.

BTW, you don't REALLY think a fundamentalist Christian is as dangerous as a fundamentalist muslim, do you?

DCPatriot, it sounds as if your relations with your neighbors are governed by the policy of MAD (mutual assured destruction), which supposedly kept us safe from nuclear attack for so many decades.

Unfortunately for you, and the Soviets, Ronald Reagan proved, with his 'star wars' speech, that the protection of such a policy is illusory.

That's why sometimes, neighbors assault and kill their neighbors, because MAD just doesn't work.

Let's face it, some of your neighbors are a lot weaker, punier and more helpless than you, and some are not!

You probably don't have to worry too much about the puny ones, but you had better hope that the dangerous ones believe in God, (or have two strikes).

Regarding 'extreme' religion, I think its reasonable to say that Mother Teresa's life was an example of 'religion practiced to extreme...' ... did you consider her dangerous?

    Dear lakey,

Either you are very misinformed about Arnold's aborted move to reform public pensions, or you are trying to mislead people. The pension reform initiative would have simply converted defined benefit pensions into defined contribution pensions, like a 401k plan.

The fact is, under the current system, the State CAN raid the pensions whenever it wants to, because the money in the pension funds DOES NOT belong to state employees, or to pensioners, but to the Pension Boards, which are creatures controlled by the State.

Actually, if Arnold's plan were enacted your pension would be much safer, because the money invested would belong to YOU, the worker, and be kept in YOUR OWN account, not in a huge pool of money under the control of a board appointed by the politicians.

Also, remember that the laws governing the pensions were created by the Legislature, which could at any time amend the law, and put the pension money under THEIR direct control.

You should fervently pray that Arnold's pension reform DOES get enacted. The only reason it was pulled from signature-gathering last Spring is because the author, Assemblyman Keith Richman, did not provide any protection for disability and survivor benefit plans for police and firemen, so their unions stirred up a lot of negative publicity, mostly with lies about the Governor planning to starve their widows and orphans by cutting off their their pension checks.

The fact is, such plans could easily be covered by insurance programs, paid out of profits from the private accounts.

For a good idea of how beneficial private accounts would be, go to my brilliant friend Dick McDonald's website for his New Social Security Institute:
