Dzhohkar Tsarnaev, the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing, is on the cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine, along with an accompanying profile of the one-time UMass Dartmouth student who went to high school in Cambridge. The cover story, "Jahar's World," reveals that Tsaranev played down his Muslim faith in high school, once told a friend that terrorist attacks could be justified, and may have been willing to surrender during a standoff in Watertown on April 19 because of a plea from a former wrestling coach. Tsarnaev, who went to high school at Cambridge Rindge and Latin,...

Lauren Resnick, a former federal prosecutor in New York who secured a conviction in the killing of an Orthodox Jew during the 1991 Crown Heights riots in Brooklyn, said the Justice Department could conceivably proceed under a theory that Zimmerman interfered with Martin’s right to walk down a public street based on his race. But even that is difficult since the conflict occurred in a gated community, which may not fit the legal definition of a public facility. Prosecutors would also probably need to prove that trailing Martin on the street constituted interference, she said. ‘‘One could argue it did,...

Security experts and crisis management pros say the former neighborhood watch volunteer must immediately get a security plan in place. This could involve hiring an expensive team of bodyguards or consultants who will assess whether the threats against him are credible. Richard Davis, the operations director for The Bodyguard Group of Beverly Hills, said that if Zimmerman were to hire his firm, he would have a stable of former Navy SEALS and Special Forces guards looking out for his safety around the clock. They would relocate him to a safe home (probably in a large city where he can blend...

Based on the current trajectory, it would not be surprising to see U.S. production top the previous peak of 10 million barrels per day sometime in the next few years. Since the start of the year, U.S. oil production has averaged 1.2 million barrels per day above last year's levels. To put that in perspective, total worldwide oil demand growth has come in below 1 million barrels per day in each of the last three years. In other words, the U.S. alone could supply the growth in global demand and then some.

As far as the eye can see, the dusty scrubland, where nothing grows taller than a three-foot mesquite bush, is chequered with neat rectangles of gravel, each with its own “nodding donkey” oil pump.
