The autopsy of an unarmed man killed by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer in September shows he had 10 bullet wounds, including five that were fatal. The report released Friday also revealed no illegal drugs in Jonathon Ferrell’s system. The 24-year-old had a blood-alcohol content of 0.06, which is within the legal limit of 0.08 for driving, the autopsy results also show. He also had traces of nicotine and caffeine. On the night of Sept. 14, Ferrell wrecked his car on Reedy Creek Road in northeast Charlotte and then banged on the door of a nearby house. The woman inside the...

Roy Rutland was on his way back to police headquarters, westbound on Northwest 36th Street, when he saw an impact up ahead. He saw a flash of brake lights and an animal rolling on the street. Rutland, a Miami-Dade detective, pulled up to the spot impact Monday night and rolled down his window. "I saw this beautiful shepherd on the ground and yelping so loud in pain," he said. "Two otherdogs were there and they were barking, almost like they were asking for help."

"Florida Republican Rep. Allen West kept his promise to Rep. Michele Bachmann when he said he would "straighten her out" about her willingness to drill for oil and natural gas in the Florida Everglades. West sent a letter to the Republican presidential candidate on Tuesday, explaining in detail why--in his words--she made an "incredible faux pas" by supporting energy exploration in the national park."

Newt Gingrich is facing criticism for yet another idea he has floated during his presidential campaign -- that the country bring back tests for voting, which were banned by the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as a tool used to suppress African-American voters. Now, Think Progress reports, none other than Tea Party favorite Rep. Allen West (R-FL), an African-American, is disagreeing -- and referring to the sort of discrimination that his own parents faced.

WASHINGTON (AP) — First-term Republican Rep. Tim Scott of Charleston, S.C., says he's looking for "any way in the world" to get federal money to expand his hometown's aging harbor. It's the one way he won't pursue that's making some South Carolinians angry. Scott, like his state's famously conservative senator, Jim DeMint, is among a new breed of tea party-backed conservatives who have sworn off "earmarks" — the pet projects that lawmakers can write into spending bills for their districts. He won't ask for one, won't support one, doesn't even want to talk about it. His opposition to earmarks helped...

Some Arizona Republican party officials resign after Tucson shooting By Emi Kolawole While federal lawmakers debate how best to increase safety for themselves and their staff, some Arizona Republican party officials are choosing to leave office in the face of threats. A conflict that has been going on between local Arizona Republicans came to an end in the wake of the shooting in Tucson on Saturday when Arizona's Republican District 20 Chairman Anthony Miller and several others chose to resign. The Arizona Republic reports that Miller, 43, a former campaign worker for Sen.John McCain who was re-elected to a second...
