He’s described as quiet, gentle, outdoorsy; a young man of deep Christian faith and dedicated student on the cusp of a promising life beyond college. But by several accounts Thursday, a single word prevailed when describing Seattle Pacific University student Jon Meis: hero.

Mark N. Kirch, president and business manager of Operating Engineers Local 17 and nine others associated with that Hamburg-based construction union, have been named in a fresh federal racketeering indictment, prosecutors announced Tuesday. It is the latest development in a six-year-old extortion investigation of Local 17, which earlier saw several guilty pleas. The 10 were among those indicted in 2008 on similar charges. The latest, superseding indictment, accuses them of participating in a criminal enterprise which forced local and out-of-town employers to hire workers selected by the defendants, as well as threatening — and in some cases, committing — bodily...

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of The New York Times has gone up by 50 cents. On New York City newsstands, the Times now costs $2.50 for the Monday through Saturday editions. That's the same price printed on its newspapers sold across the country. Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy says the big Sunday newspaper still costs the same: $5 in the New York area and $6 in the rest of the country. And the cost of digital subscriptions remains the same. The price of home delivery is up by about 4 percent. It's the newspaper's first price increase in more...

A bevy of prominent New York Republicans endorsed Mitt Romney’s candidacy for the presidency Tuesday, saying the former Massachusetts governor represents the GOP’s best chance to beat President Obama. And in saying so, some of them said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich would likely fare far worse against Obama — and might just pull other Republicans on the ballot down to defeat, as well. “I think Mitt Romney represents the best chance for Republicans to win the White House,” said former Erie County Republican Chairman Robert E. Davis. “I just don’t see Newt Gingrich beating Barack Obama. He’s controversial.” What’s...

Father Corapi will not obey order to return to community July 08, 2011 Father John Corapi has announced that he will not obey the order from his superior in the Society of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity (SOLT) to leave his private Montana compound and live with other members of the community. In a stinging public statement released July 5, Father Gerard Sheehan, SOLT’s regional priest servant, had announced that the popular preacher and television personality is not “fit for ministry” and revealed that an investigation of Corapi’s affairs found a pattern of misconduct, including sexual relations and cohabitation...

The evidence of the President’s anti-drilling mentality and his culpability in the high gas prices hurting Americans is there for all to see. The following is not even an exhaustive list:

Just asking if anyone has listened to it, and are you going to follow His advise? Do you think He is trying to sell?

This is just an excerpt from a speech given by Lt General Kelly- it is hard to finish this-- it needs to be read and understood forever Over 5,000 have died thus far in this war; 8,000 if you include the innocents murdered on 9/11. They are overwhelmingly working class kids, the children of cops and firefighters, city and factory workers, school teachers and small business owners. With some exceptions they are from families short on stock portfolios and futures, but long on love of country and service to the nation. Just yesterday, too many were lost and a knock...

The confrontation between Paladino and a New York Post reporter featured shouting, pushing and campaign aides hustling Paladino into a bathroom to escape the scene. "You're his stalking horse. You're his bird dog," Paladino snapped at the reporter, Fred Dicker. Paladino accused the Post of sending a photographer out to Buffalo to get pictures of his out-of-wedlock child. Paladino, who earlier this year acknowledged fathering the girl 10 years ago, has said his daughter is "off limits" to the press. "I want to know why you sent goons after my daughter," Paladino shouted. "You send another goon to my daughter...

ON THE GULF OF MEXICO – A BP-chartered vessel lowered a 100-ton concrete-and-steel vault onto a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, an important step in a delicate and unprecedented attempt to stop most of the gushing crude fouling the sea. Underwater robots guided the 40-foot-tall box into place. Now that the contraption is on the seafloor, workers will need at least 12 hours to let it settle and make sure it's stable before the robots can hook up a pipe and hose that will funnel the oil up to a tanker. "It appears to be going...

Day Fourteen and Counting December 04, 2009 08:45 ET Bozell Defends Networks’ Silence on ClimateGate: “Maybe They Just Don’t Know” Alexandria, VA – For the fourteenth straight day, the three broadcast networks have failed to report on the great and growing ClimateGate scandal on their weekday morning or evening news programs. How to explain this? Perhaps it is that ABC, NBC and CBS have not yet heard of the story, despite two weeks of non-stop reporting on and discussion of ClimateGate in a whole host of media outlets. Perhaps the broadcast networks only trust their fellow liberal press outlets, like...

Murray Light: Cheney’s moral argument for torture Murray Light Updated: September 21, 2009, 11:18 AM Here I go again, another column on my favorite government whipping-boy — the former vice president, Dick Cheney. Anyone who wants to ridicule the American form of government need only point to Cheney as a prime example of how a democracy can result in the election of such a man. As I wrote in a recent column, he is a prime example of how the democratic process can go wrong. I have noted in earlier columns that I have little respect for the man and...
