  • A modest proposal for Corporations

In order to bridge the current gulf between corporate management and corporate employees, I suggest the following: 1 The Corporation is a creature of the state, and the state has the authority to define the constraints under which corporations operate. 2 There is presently a gulf between the management of large corporations and the rank and file employees. Many corporate managers make decisions without regard to employees or the long term impact of those decisions on employees. While the near-term impact of those decisions on the bottom line might appear positive, the long-term impact might be highly negative. 3 Employees...
  • Lysenkoism and Gorebull Warming

Paul Johnson (2008) wrote that the greenhouse bandwagon is like Marxist or Freudian science. A better parallel might be with Lysenko pseudo-science (Reiter, 2004). Lysenko was an insignificant agriculturalist who thought he had a new way of developing crops that would vastly increase food production in the starving Russia of Stalin. It was called vernalisation, and included treating seeds before cultivation to affect their behaviour. Significantly, Lysenko introduced his ideas first through politics, and had heavy backing. Some think his idea had a Marxist backing, because it claimed biology could be modified in the way that communists wanted to control...
  • The Press Treats Obama the Way They Treated Kennedy

During the election of 1960, the American people heard nothing about John F. Kennedy being a womanizer. From what I have heard and read, JFK would be rolled out of a different woman's bed every time they had a "call of the house" for a vote. This was common knowledge in Washington and among the press. But Kennedy was ALWAYS portrayed as the ideal family man, loving husband, and Catholic by the mainstream press. And so we are apparently about to elect the first "black" president of the United States. He will be a man who is as "black" as...
  • Nominate Walter Williams for the Supreme Court

I think President Bush should nominate someone like Dr. Walter Williams to the Supreme Court for at least two reasons: 1) The entertainment value. Watching Walter Williams answer Senator Ted Kennedy's questions during a confirmation hearing would be interesting. 2) A dig at lawyers and the American Bar Association. Nowhere in my reading of the Constitution can I find a requirement that Supreme Court Justices must be lawyers. Lawyers are folks who study, work with, and presumably love "the law." I want someone on the Supreme Court who loves Liberty first and foremost - and someone not affiliated with the...
  • Freedom from SPAM is a form of Liberty!

I believe in Liberty as much as anyone. Can anyone explain to me why I should have to wade through tons of SPAM. It's no different than having a loud party at 2AM on a weekday in the condo next door. If no one can give me a good argument, then let's get on with the business of eliminating SPAM.
  • The New Tweed Ring

Remember the cartoon depicting "Boss Tweed" and his cronies in a ring pointing to the person next to them answering "Who stole the people's money?" from Tammany Hall? Given what we are learning about corporate misdeeds, etc. someone with more artistic talent than I have should modify this cartoon and show the characters scratching each other's backs. Then add the names of some of the most outrageously compensated CEOs to replace the Tammany Hall names. The business of interlocking directorates and toady inside directors has got to end. I am not anti-business, I'm against CEOs who think that they deserve...

  • Republicans are wrong. It's not OUR money.

We need to get something straight, here. If Congress can tax whatever percentage of our income it decides is appropriate, then it's not OUR money. It's THEIR (Congress') money and they are just nice enough to let us keep some of it! Additionally, the Democrat's song about how a tax cut would benefit the rich more than the poor should be answered simply. What the Dems are calling for is "From each according to his ability -- to each according to his need." That's Communism, and it doesn't work! Repeal the income tax!
  • Why Technical Projects are Always Behind Schedule [my title]

    02/25/2001 6:21:28 PM PST · by Lafayette · 1+ views
    Electronic Engineering Times ^ | 02/05/01 | Ronald Collett
Missed Opportunities When I tell engineering managers that 85 percent of all chip design projects miss their target schedule, they offer an interesting response: The other 15 percent are lying. It's an indictment of today's management processes. Even worse, the amount of time by which schedules are missed varies wildly. How does the industry expect to realize its full potential if it can't hit target schedules? What really occurs inside chip design organizations is that design managers are given three constraints that are fundamentally irreconcilable. They're given a schedule, a specification of the chip's desired functionality and performance, and ...
  • Federal panel says it's illegal to exclude contraceptive coverage

Federal panel says it's illegal to exclude contraceptive coverage8.03 p.m. ET (118 GMT) December 13, 2000 By Laura Meckler, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — It's against federal law for employers to exclude contraceptives from their health insurance plans when they cover other preventive treatments, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Wednesday. The decision directly affects only two women who complained to the commission, but it has implications for millions of others whose health insurance plans exclude birth control pills, diaphragms and other forms of prescription contraceptives. "Our hope is that we announce a principle and employers want to comply with the ...
  • What if those cheaters in Palm Beach County hadn't goofed

Robert Cook's analysis of the overvotes in Palm Beach County leaves little doubt that a person or persons tampered with the ballots. They apparently made a mistake and punched out the hole for Buchanan on a large number (5000?) of ballots, thereby rendering them void at least for the presidential election. Let's suppose that this did happen, but suppose instead, the perpetrators had gotten it right. Wouldn't that have given Mr. Gore an additional several thousand votes that he may or may not have deserved? If Gore had won, even through fraud, would Bush have contested the results? My point ...
  • Contested Congressional Races

I was a Republican precinct chairman in Houston in the 70's and 80's. Seems to me back then that whenever there was a contested Congressional race, it was always, always decided in favor of the Democrats. They were the majority, and that was that. Now that the Republicans are in the majority, contested Congressional races are decided on the basis of "fairness." At least one Democrat from Lousiana was seated by the Republican majority. I wish that some Freeper with more spare time than I have would check to see if the Democratic majority in Congress ever seated a Republican ...
  • Who needs term limits? Another solution.

I believe in term limits. But apparently we are not going to get them passed. So how about this approach: By what right does one district, just because it keeps electing the same lout over and over again, obtain the "extra" fruit which is the result of the power that seniority gives a congressman? If our nation is truly "of the people, by the people, and for the people," then why do we need congressmen serving on the same committees for decade after decade so they can become "experts" on the details of say, the tax code, which no reasonable ...

When are my fellow citizens going to wake up and realize that there is not a problem with our democracy, but that the problem IS democracy? How stupid does it have to get before we understand that democracy is not about the triumph of ideas and ideals, but rather about the manipulation of the masses? ITEM: If democracy is what makes this country great, then why isn’t it the “Statue of Democracy” that stands in New York harbor, and the “Democracy Bell” that hangs in Philadelphia, and why didn’t Patrick Henry say “Give me Democracy or Give me Death!” ITEM: ...
  • Serious Question About Taxes

    self | 09/20/00 | Lafayette
What percentage of the cost of an American-made automobile can be attributed to taxes? Does anyone out there know? I've wanted to know for years, but don't know who to ask. Consider the following: Included in the cost of an automobile are the wages and salaries of all who worked to design, build, and market the automobile, as well as the salaries of all those who manage those processes. If the average taxes paid by all the workers at every level comes to 50% (Federal, state, local taxes plus FICA, Medicare, etc), then can't you guesstimate the percentage at somewhere ...

  • When was the last time Republican controlled both houses & presidency?

I was just wondering when the last time was that Republicans controlled both houses of Congress as well as the presidency. In the 83rd Congress (1953-1955), the records show for the Senate D-46, R-48, Other-2, while Republicans held an 8-seat majority in the house, with Ike in the White House. Prior to that you have to go back to 1931-1933 with Hoover as President (and some Republican he was!). Isn't it time to give Republicans a chance?
  • Of Elian and Abortion

Civilized people do not invade private homes in the pre-dawn hours. Civilized people do not invade the womb to kill children not yet born. It is no surprise to me that we are as divided on Elian as we are on abortion. It could be said that those who support the kidnapping of Elian claim it as compassion for the rights of the (so-called) father. Those who support abortion do so out of compassion for the "mother's" physical, social, and emotional well-being. We have become so compassionate that we have become uncivilized!

While in high school, one of the school administrators had been a Colonel in Cuban President Batista's army. We had a number of fascinating conversations about Castro, the US State Department and so on. According to this gentleman, the price John F. Kennedy paid to get the missiles removed from Cuba was an agreement with the Soviet government. The meat of the agreement was: 1) That the U.S. would never invade Cuba, 2) The U.S. would not permit others to invade Cuba from U.S. soil, and 3) the U.S. would do everything in its power to prevent the invasion of ...

All you folks who, like me, are mad as heck about the Elian Gonzalez situation need to be reminded that it is not the Statue of Democracy that stands in New York Harbor, it is not the Democracy Bell that hangs in Philadelphia, and Patrick Henry did not say "Give me Democracy or give me Death!" That the majority of a the sheeple seem to say that the government was right or even within its rights to kidnap Elian should be proof that Democracy is not meant for us, and we are not meant for Democracy. We worship at the ...
