At the beginning of this tournament, we received so many comments from readers complaining about the ESPN and ABC announcers that we had to ask you to stop sending them in. It was true, however, that like many of you, I found it so hard to listen to their game commentary that I switched to Univision — even though I was describing matches live and needed a steady flow of information. It felt as if whatever information I was getting through half-understood Spanish was superior to what I was getting on the English-language telecasts. After a few days, however, the...

The envelope, please. The combatants in Super Bowl XLI, on Feb. 4, 2007, at Dolphins Stadium? The New England Patriots vs. the Dallas Cowboys. You heard it here first. All kinds of great angles. Belichick-Parcells. Bledsoe-Belichick. Kraft-Parcells. Brady-Bledsoe. Parcells and his son-in-law, Pats VP of player personnel Scott Pioli, on opposite sides. Maybe we'd call it the Dallas Pioli Bowl. There are two weeks between the conference championships and the Super Bowl this season. We'd need two months to cover all the angles. That's how many good stories would be connected to this game. ... Over the last few days,...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new study finds Californians are getting alarmingly fat, with more than half of all adults overweight. The study estimates that overweight and inactive Californians cost $21.7 billion a year in medical bills, injuries and lost productivity. The study blames a decade of overeating and sitting in front of the television. It finds that nearly 53 percent of Californians over 25 are overweight, and more than 17 percent are obese, or extremely overweight. The rates among Hispanics, blacks and adults with less than a high school education are even higher and exceed 60 percent. The study was...

LONDON (Reuters) - A Welsh rugby fan cut off his own testicles to celebrate Wales beating England at rugby, the Daily Mirror reported Tuesday. Reuters Photo Geoff Huish, 26, was so convinced England would win Saturday's match he told fellow drinkers at a social club, "If Wales win I'll cut my balls off," the paper said. Friends at the club in Caerphilly, south Wales, thought he was joking. But after the game Huish went home, severed his testicles with a knife, and walked 200 yards back to the bar with the testicles to show the shocked drinkers what he had...

On the heels of critics awards from both New York and Los Angeles, the indie comedy Sideways dominated this year's Golden Globe nominations with a field-best seven nominations. The Alexander Payne wine-country flick nabbed Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Score nominations along with nods for actors Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, and Virginia Madsen, making it the movie to beat at this year's Globes, though it's competing mainly in comedy categories.

Zola "over the moon" with OBE Friday 29 October, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gianfranco Zola has said he’s “over the moon” at receiving an OBE in a special ceremony on Monday. The little Sardinian won over the British public during his seven years at Chelsea before returning to take his hometown club into Serie A. “I feel over the moon and it’s so difficult to describe certain emotions,” commented the 38-year-old Cagliari hero. “I am very honoured and really didn’t expect to receive such a prestigious recognition. I am so happy and feel like a true British citizen, but I expect the...

Top Dem fund-raiser charged with trying to block federal probe The Associated Press 7/13/2004, 12:40 p.m. ET NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Federal prosecutors have charged Gov. James E. McGreevey's top fund-raiser with hiring a prostitute to try to thwart a federal probe, authorities said Tuesday. Real estate developer Charles Kushner hired a New York City call girl to have sex with a witness in the investigation, had the sex act videotaped and sent the witness' wife a copy of the tape, U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said. Kushner, 50, of Livingston, is charged with conspiracy, obstructing a federal investigation and...

Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with. Because this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life and children, as is said above, when...

Special Report McGlory Be Print Friendly Format E-Mail this to a Friend By Patrick Hynes Published 3/17/2004 12:05:19 AM In the heat of the 2000 election, Vice President Al Gore ridiculously remarked that the characters in the movie Love Story were based on him and his wife Tipper. The comment was patently untrue and, given Gore's earlier whopper about inventing the Internet, it was easy to shrug off. But John Kerry, this year's Democrat heir presumptive to the presidency, may have a greater claim to the role of screenwriter's muse. The 1997 Gramercy Pictures production The Matchmaker features a character...

Did John Kerry Lie About Abortion? 2/23/04 While the Democratic primary has gotten more interesting with Senator John Edwards' strong showing Tuesday in Wisconsin, it still looks like Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts will be going head-to-head with President Bush in this fall's election. This makes things interesting for voting Catholics — after all, Kerry likes to tout his Catholic faith to prospective voters. Of course, this isn't always an easy thing to do, given the senator's strong support of abortion. His strategy for getting away with this, though, is the same one used by so many "Catholic" politicians: He...

There is simply no practical way to design an on site rail system security system to prevent what happened on in Madrid. There is simply too much peak period passenger volume to have screeners check everyone's bags and coats for bombs. Random screening could be implemented, but smart devious people will not be deterred. The only way to stop an attack on our rail systems is to either stop terrorists at our borders or to have intense surveillance of suspected terrorist within our borders. This is what failed in Spain. The Patriot Act is thus the thin blue line which...

Hart backs Kerry's campaign October 01, 2003 The Denver Post By John Aloysius Farrell Gary Hart endorsed Sen. John Kerry for president Tuesday, saying that the Massachusetts Democrat was the most qualified and best-prepared candidate in the race. "We cannot afford on-the-job training," Hart said in a conference call with Kerry and reporters. "People should be prepared to be president before they run for president. "Contrary to present experience," said Hart, in a knock at President Bush, "I think the nation is better served when a person enters the office having studied and prepared ... rather than fitting some personality...

An encounter with Gaddafi By Osasu Obayiuwana BBC Sport Gadaffi was not keen to tackle serious questions As the son of one of Africa's best-known leaders, it is not surprising that Al-Saadi Gaddafi's three-pronged foray into football continues to attract the headlines. He is, permit the pun, juggling a lot of balls at the moment - a not-so-successful playing career at Italian Serie A side Perugia, a key role in leading Libya's 2010 World Cup bid and business interests at Juventus - through the Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company. When he visited Fifa's Zurich headquarters on 30 September, to submit...
