  • America’s just not that into you, Mr President. The future still looks grim for Barack Obama

There is still no sign at all of any kind of near or long-term recovery for President Obama after his midterm shellacking in early November. If anything, one month on from the Congressional elections which brought the Democratic Party to its knees, the outlook is getting even worse for the Obama presidency, and the notion of an Obama bounce is simply a pipe dream at the moment.
  • How to win the race for jobs

As last week’s jobs numbers reminded us, emerging from the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression isn’t going to be easy. We need to be creative and daring. We need a moon shot — a Jobs Race to the Top. The goal: Create 3 million jobs in three years. It’s doable with an aggressive strategy. In Michigan, we are trying our own version of this race — focused on the lithium-ion advanced battery for electric cars, a high-tech product previously manufactured almost exclusively in Asia. • How the Democrats almost stole the election. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

I believe that the events happening in Florida are a deliberate, coordinated effort by the Democrat party to steal the election for Al Gore. I have figured out how they are doing it, and will take you through it, step by step. There are a couple of things that don't seem to make sense. For example, Senator Torricelli, an extreme partisan Democrat Senator has called for Gore to concede. And now, we have a vote-a-matic card punching machine which was missing, then shows up in the trunk of a Democrat county official, and nothing is being done about it. I ...

Puzzled by the state poll results? So are the candidates In this excruciatingly close election, the states are not lining up like they used to. Florida, where the elder George Bush won 61 percent of the vote in 1988, is now the most furiously contested state, with polls showing both George W. Bush and Al Gore with small leads. New Jersey, a key target state in 1988, is now safely Democratic. So, probably, is California. Yet in Oregon and Washington, Wisconsin and Minnesota, Iowa and West Virginia–six of the 10 states carried by Michael Dukakis in 1988–polls have shown Bush ...

  • McCain To Miss This Week's Debate

Republican John McCain won't take part in this week's GOP presidential campaign debate, and aides say they pulled out because rival George W. Bush was slow to agree to the California event and that sparked scheduling conflicts. McCain's aides denied the move represented a shift in strategy and resources away from California toward other important states that vote on March 7, like New York. "We're not going to let George Bush dictate our schedule," said McCain spokesman Todd Harris. Harris said McCain remained committed to fighting hard in California and pointed to a heavy campaign schedule in that state all ...
  • Ralph David Abernathy III

    Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | January 28, 2000 | Leita Cowart / AJC
Ralph David Abernathy III was sentenced to four years in prison today for his conviction on charges that he stole from the state while serving as a Georgia senator. Visiting Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the jail time despite pleas for leniency from Abernathy's mother and from the Rev. Hosea Williams. Abernathy hugged his mother, Juanita Abernathy, and smiled before deputies led him away. McConnell said he would hold an appeal bond hearing for Abernathy next week. "I can't believe it," said Williams. "He shouldn't get this much time." Both Mrs. Abernathy and Williams begged McConnell to let Abernathy ...
  • Candidate of the permanently PO’ed

He was a Reaganite until the Berlin Wall collapsed, the Soviet Union disintegrated, the US enjoyed the greatest economic expansion in history and virtually the entire world embraced capitalism. Now he’s decided that free markets don’t work. You can, of course, question Buchanan’s judgment. This is a guy who served under Nixon and Reagan and somehow decided that the man to emulate was Nixon. So Buchanan has become the candidate of the permanently angry, offering an odd mix of issues designed to appeal to anyone who’s mad at his boss, his immigrant neighbor, his rich cousin, whomever. Pat’s problem is ...
