"These guys view themselves as this fanciful group of patriotic freedom fighters, the Second Coming of the Sons of Liberty, and there are many of them who are preparing for civil war right now." MSNBC 'expert' equates Republicans to terrorists, warns of QAnon supporters 'who are preparing for civil war' In an interview on The Reidout with Joy Reid this week, author Malcom Nance warned that Q-Anon supporters have taken over the Republican Party and are "preparing for civil war." "On August 13th or 14th, just a few days from now, the Q-Anon believers, which is now a substantial portion...

As part of a weapons amnesty in Denmark, police recovered a vintage stockpile of munitions including submachine guns and grenades. The South Jutland Police posted images to social media last week of some 25 weapons and 100 grenades turned in as part of a reprieve for those with illegal or unregistered arms, many of which may have a connection to Danish history. Occupied by Germany during World War II, Denmark was home to a well-organized network of underground resistance units, often equipped by the Allies through the OSS and SOE. Among the weapons brought down from attics and up from...

ODESSA/SLAVIANSK, Ukraine, May 5 (Reuters) - Pro-Russian rebels shot down a Ukrainian helicopter in fierce fighting near the eastern town of Slaviansk on Monday, and Kiev drafted police special forces to the southwestern port city of Odessa to halt a feared westward spread of rebellion. Ukraine said the Odessa force, based on "civil activists", would replace local police who had failed to tackle rebel actions at the weekend. Its dispatch was a clear signal from Kiev that, while tackling rebellion in the east, it would vigorously resist any sign of a slide to a broader civil war. ...

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, run neck-and-neck with President Obama in a general-election matchup, according to a new CBS News poll released late on Monday that shows the two front-runners in Tuesday's New Hampshire GOP primary running stronger against the president than their fellow Republicans. Romney posts a two-point lead over Obama, 47 percent to 45 percent, within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. He leads Obama, 45 percent to 39 percent, among independent voters. Obama's lead over Paul is just one point, 46 percent to 45 percent, as...

Bin Laden ... had a strategy that we never bothered to understand, and thus that we never bothered to defend against. What he really wanted to do ... was bankrupt the United States of America. ... Bin Laden was part of the resistance, and the resistance was successful — not only in repelling the Soviet invasion, but in contributing to the Communist super-state’s collapse a few years later. “We, alongside the mujaheddin, bled Russia for 10 years, until it went bankrupt,” The campaign taught bin Laden a lot. For one thing, superpowers fall because their economies crumble, not because they’re...

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has ordered his staff to revise a computerized forecasting model that showed that climate legislation supported by President Obama would make planting trees more lucrative than producing food. The latest Agriculture Department economic-impact study of the climate bill, which passed the House this summer, found that the legislation would profit farmers in the long term. But those profits would come mostly from higher crop prices as a result of the legislation's incentives to plant more forests and thus reduce the amount of land devoted to food-producing agriculture. According to the economic model used by the department...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - As he stood at the lectern in the Court Chamber of the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, Charleston lawyer Troy Giatras had to remind himself to make eye contact with all nine justices. Read about the case "The room is very small, probably only half the size of the West Virginia Supreme Court," Giatras said. Designed by Cass Gilbert, the same architect who designed West Virginia's Capitol and Supreme Court, the high court's intimate setting leaves lawyers virtually face to face with Chief Justice John Roberts. Monday's case, United States v. Hayes, concerned whether a 1994 battery...

"McCain is not the stranger to technology some think him to be. McCain is now asking supporters to stump for him on blogs. Republican Web 2.0 consultant David All was effluent with praise for this outreach, calling it 'smart' and 'unique.' McCain's blogger outreach section has a handy list of political blogs which might be interested in hearing about McCain, such as the DailyKos, Crooks and Liars, and Think Progress. You can even report your posts to the campaign and 'receive points for your success,' though the page doesn't say what exactly the points are good for." Slashdot is not...

Removing 460 children from a polygamist sect compound and then reuniting them with their families will cost Texas $7 million, according to the state Department of Family and Protective Services. The children were ordered returned to their families this week after the Texas Supreme Court found that the state did not have enough evidence to show that abuse was happening at the Yearning for Zion ranch near Eldorado. Custody Battle Over Sect ChildrenMike Stone, ReutersA woman and two children from a polygamist sect in Eldorado, Texas, prepare to return home Tuesday after sect children were ordered reunited with their families....

SAN ANGELO, Texas - State child welfare authorities on Friday appealed a stinging court ruling that said their seizure of more than 440 children from a polygamist sect's ranch was unjustified, but they also agreed to reunite 12 children with their parents while the case moves on. The agreement narrowly specifies 12 children, some of whose parents had filed a motion with a state district court in San Antonio for their release from state foster care. The Bush administration said yesterday that it plans to start using the nation's most advanced spy technology for domestic purposes soon, rebuffing challenges by House Democrats over the idea's legal authority. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department will activate his department's new domestic satellite surveillance office in stages, starting as soon as possible with traditional scientific and homeland security activities -- such as tracking hurricane damage, monitoring climate change and creating terrain maps. Sophisticated overhead sensor data will be used for law enforcement once privacy and civil rights concerns are resolved, he said. The department has previously said...

Shortages of the staple crop of half the world's people could bring unrest across Asia and Africa, reports foreign affairs editor Peter Beaumont A global rice shortage that has seen prices of one of the world's most important staple foods increase by 50 per cent in the past two weeks alone is triggering an international crisis, with countries banning export and threatening serious punishment for hoarders.... The impact will be felt most keenly by the world's poorest populations, who have become increasingly dependent on the crop as the prices of other grains have become too costly. The sharp rise in...

Steve Marshall is an English travel agent. He lives in Spain, and he sells trips to Europeans who want to go to sunny places, including Cuba. In October, about 80 of his Web sites stopped working, thanks to the United States government. ... It turned out, though, that Mr. Marshall’s Web sites had been put on a Treasury Department blacklist and, as a consequence, his American domain name registrar, eNom Inc., had disabled them. Mr. Marshall said eNom told him it did so after a call from the Treasury Department; the company, based in Bellevue, Wash., says it learned that...

The Alabama Republican Assembly (ALRA) has announced its endorsement of Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul for President. The ALRA is an affiliate of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA), known as the Republican Wing of the Republican Party. Ronald Reagan once referred to the NFRA as "the conscience of the Republican Party." "We congratulate Ron Paul on winning the ALRA endorsement," said Elaine Little, Chairman of the Alabama Republican Assembly's endorsing convention. "It's evident that the overwhelming majority of delegates determined that Congressman Paul best represents the Republican platform and the conservative values of limited government and personal freedom."...

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that campaign for Republican US Presidential candidate Ron Paul is questioning results of this week's Louisiana Caucus. After all, this is the state that failed miserably to protect its citizens from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina (both before and after), pays its law enforcement officers the absolute lowest salaries, and has issued "sealed" arrest warrants for a few dozen online gambling operators after presumably coming under pressure from local casinos. The later became the State's number one priority, it seemed, following Hurricane Katrina. Go figure! Now comes word that they have botched...

The Democrat opposition is busy gathering up negative info to run on any possible Republican candidate, much as the Republicans are no doubt doing on the Democrats. Here’s a small sample of what they have on FDT so far (at least what they’re willing to show)… Thompson’s unremarkable record in the Senate: A scouring of the legislative website of the Library of Congress from 1995 to 2002, when Mr. Thompson was in the Senate, yields a total of five bills that became law for which he was the head sponsor. A sixth passed the Senate and was replaced by an...

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Ron Paul raised nearly $20 million in the last quarter, likely more than any of his rivals. He garnered 10 percent of the Republican vote in the Iowa Caucuses, surpassing Rudolph W. Giuliani....But the Texas congressman and presidential contender won’t be getting a seat and the table at Sunday’s Fox News Republican candidate forum. On Saturday the New Hampshire Republican party expressed its disappointment with the decision to exclude Mr. Paul and Representative Duncan Hunter of California by severing its partnership with Fox....Supporters of Mr. Paul will still be able to watch him on their television screens...
