  • Mark Steyn: Bystanders in their own fate

I will on occassion, but I had one friend make a smug comment about our “cowboy mentality” and I went a 20 minute rant about football hooligans, WW II era Nazi sympathizers and appeasers, current day support for the Palestines and how that all added up to ugly, bigotted society that had best keep their opinions to themselves. They’re still priggesh they talk about the US, but they now do it in very small doses around me.

I have friends from the UK who say the same things. That insufferable and undeserved sense of moral superiority colors everything they do and say. The sad thing is that they took that same attitude with Nazi Germany. I guess that worked out OK, ‘cause they’re doing it again.

  • Young Woman Who Died from Botched 33-Week Abortion Identified

Amen. My ex-wife and I were told she was carrying a child with significant deformities at six months. She was given a choice to abort the baby immediately or wait until the child died and have labor induced. To her everlasting credit, she chose the latter. She carried a child she knew to be dying for almost another month. It was agonizing physically, mentally and emotionally and she would do it again without hesitation. If this young woman’s life was endangered by the “fetal abnormalities”, then she should have been in a hospital. If the baby was in jeopardy, she should have beein in the hospital. Going to this butcher was the wrong choice and it cost them both their lives. We baptised and buried our beautiful daughter and still mark her birthday 17 years later. I wish this woman peace, but I have a hard time with forgiveness.

You don’t think “the doctrine of priestly celibacy can lead the priesthood to be a good safehaven for Christian men with homosexual proclivities” isn’t a generalization? Just so that we’re clear, it is. You’ve had several reasonable conversations with people you agree with or can share sarcastic comments with. When I made statements about divisions you made it about homosexual priests. I was addressing your flawed assumptions about priests and the priesthood in general. The fact that you continue to do so makes me regret saying I was done. I’m not.

You kind of missed the whole ironic nature of my post, didn’t you. The “gutsy move” was meant to mirror what you’ve said. It’s obvious that you just want to goad me (and everyone else that has disagreed with you on this thread), so I’ll just leave you alone. Be sure to not to break anything falling off of that high horse of yours.

Frankly, I’m not surprised to see that you are a Baptist. I’ve had a Baptist pastor tell my child she wasn’t a Christian because she was a Catholic. Beleive me, the exact opposite is being preached from the pulpits of my church. True evil divides true Christians. Always has, always will. I don’t know if you’ve read it here or not, but there is a war on our culture and our faith going on right now. Allowing ignorance (and it is ignorance) like this to divide us leaves a big hole for our common enemy to fill. Well at least this let’s me know where you are coming from.

Again, you never address anything in my argument. For the record, your statements were ignorant and moronic. You made broad and unsubstanitated statements which showed your ignorance. You made them about people you don’t know based on information gained from publications you know have a record of fabricating stories about people or groups they don’t like; that’s moronic. You don’t speak to me because I defend people you’ve already decided are beneath contempt. You’ve gone from referring to my argument as a rant and now you want to call it a hissy-fit. I’m glad you’ve decided to elevate the intellectual level of the conversation. You insulted a group of people that I happen to know personally and regard highly. If you weren’t prepared to back it up with anything other than schoolyard taunts, then don’t post here. I may not be as measured in my responses as I should have been, but you hit a nerve. That doesn’t mean I will not contimie to challenge you. What else do you have besides “I didn’t say they were pedophiles”?

Thank you proving my point. You marginalize my opinion by calling it a rant. You don’t deign to argue since my response doesn’t rise to the level of your towering intellect. Your understanding of Catholicism is miniscule, yet you present yourself as an expert and, as an extra bonus, you insult me for my beliefs. Welcome to Free Republic President Obama. BTW-your tying deviancy, whether it was homosexuality or pedophilia, is still flawed and ignorant (but I’m sure you’ll still be able to come up with a pithy and insulting response anyway).

As a matter of fact, I did go with my first instinct. I stayed with the faith that transcends the weakness of a few of it’s priests. Your flippant response pretty much confirms who I’m dealing with. Enjoy your smug self-rightousness.

I have had my differences with the church over the last few years, so I tend to stay out of these threads. However, your comments have been so ignorant and moronic that I felt the need to chime in. How many of these gay/celibate/pedophile priests do you know personally? I have met and been friends with literally hundreds in my lifetime and I was never molested, hit on or even made to feel uncomfortable. The priests I have known were men who sacrificed their lives to the service of their communities. Most were on call 24/7 to be with their parishoners in some of the worst moments of their lives. They live lives of sacrifice and service that leaves no time for a family of their own (which is the reason for the vow of celibacy in the first place). Their reard of late has been to be branded with a scarlet P due to the actions of a statistical few. You obviously know nothing more than what the NY Times or Boston Globe has written. The same publications that you would excoriate for conservatism are spot on when it comes to Catholic priests? Please. Your “everyone knows” and “common sense should tell you” style of arguments are exactly the same kind of logic used by the mob in charge of the WH and Congress today.

A little Friday morning Schadenfreude. Chuck Turner was the clown who, along with his enablers at the Boston Globe, accused our troops in Iraq with rape using pictures that later turned out to be from a porn site. of course the countdown to the race card being played has just begun.

This is Boston. The media here has made a cottage industry out of trashing the Archdiocese before during and after the abuse scandal. The network affiliates were notified, but didn’t care. Frankly, if 5-6 hundred thousand people gather for a peaceful vigil for anything and you aren’t interested, there isn’t anything else that will reel you in.

Thank you for posting this. For a truly worldwide, totally positive event, WYD has gotten zero new coverage. A gathering of over a half million people gets trumped by a handful of idiots protesting the war on some street corner in Berkeley. I am personally acquainted with 30+ young people who made the pilgrimage (my own son had to cancel due to a health issue). We had hundreds of adults and teens from the Boston area attend this event, yet all the local media could cover were three women who had themselves ordained priests. The attendance of this “oridination” was far less than the local participation at WYD. It sickened and discouraged me, as well as my kids. Seeing this, and other WYD threads posted here helps to restore some of my faith in the FR forum that, frankly, has been shaken of late.

I think you’re right. I noticed that when Sawyer found her, she was covered by a sheet. At the time I thought that was kind of goofy, given the fact that the rest of the house was blown to smithereens. Also, Miles the Ghostbuster was just a little too interested in here. I think she’s dead.
