When faced with the notion of outsourcing certain government services, officials tend to say "Government can do it cheaper because we do not have to pay a profit to executives". This idea often comes up in the health care debate. It is a fundamental misunderstanding of profit. It is not a surprise for people in government to misunderstand profit. If you have never run a business, made a payroll, raised capital, or promised share holders a return it would be difficult to fully understand the true meaning of profit. A contrasting example would be if someone asked me to be...

As I ponder candidates for 2012 and listen to the logic for various Republicans, I am thoughtful of the underlying dynamics that are in the President's favor. The reality of the demographic almost assures Obama's re-election. The best Republican candidate is the one who can reverse these demographic forces.

Singular policies driven by "do good" liberals and the federal government put focus on limited bad acts. Kesey wrote a story based on his LSD induced observations in one VA mental hospital. Once his story was put into film, his small example failsly characterized the bulk of mental health care as dehumanizing and made it impossible to force the Laughners of the world to get treatment.

In reviewing many acts of political violence the major motivation seems to be fame seekers and nut cases. There are many examples of presidential assassins who are progressive, marxist, etc - left leaning. The violent groups through the 60's and 70's were mostly left leaning anti war groups. It is only recently (Oklahoma City) that there have been serious anti-government right wing led efforts. There is no real evidence that the right wing in the United States is prone to kill or blow things up for a political end (OK City a notable exception).

Frankly I think Capt. Owen Honor should report to Washington and come out of the closet saying he is a repressed homosexual who can finally express his true feelings now with the reform of DADT. I am not sure what the politically correct class in DC would do then, but it would be fun to watch.

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al: We have stuck together since the late 1950's for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce.... I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.....

....The Mexican government uses its vast military and police forces to keep its citizens intimidated and compliant. They never protest at their capitol or government offices, but do protest daily in front of the United States Embassy. The U.S. Embassy looks like a strongly reinforced fortress and during most protests the Mexican military surrounds the block with their men standing shoulder to shoulder in full riot gear to protect the Embassy. These protests are never shown on U.S. or Mexican TV. There is a large public park across the street where they do their protesting. Anything can cause a protest...

In reviling testimonyon the Hill today, Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson discovered the military may be covering up that the redeployment of military bases to Guam may cause the island to "Tip" over. Rep. Johnson asked Generals if an Island 7 miles by 12 miles had enough space to support military operations. The military, reluctant to answer under the Johnson's relentless pressure, said "Congressman I don't know but can get back to you". Rep Johnson's asked "How big is Guam if it were 24 miles by 7 miles". The General trying to obfuscate admitted "Congressman, I don't know, but I would...

I spent a good part of my career as an engineer involved in complex aerospace systems. When I think of all the complexity that goes into aircraft design, I am impressed that our engineering process deliver such a high quality and safe solution. I have always thought a great deal of Toyota and their talent. The loss of life from unintended acceleration is a great tragedy. Frankly its amazing there are not more automotive deaths given the range of drivers and capabilities.....

Our congressional leaders have seen fit to implement the perfect health care system for the country, but have chosen not to make it applicable to the senior leadership of congress and their staff. It is hard to justify this position. For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that congressional operations and members of Congress are exempt from various laws or have special benefits.....

I was traveling the other day to a remote location in Michigan. I live in a major city. The principle airline is dramatically reducing traffic, so everyone has to go to the smaller concourse now to get a flight. We were leaving at 6:00 am, which means we arrived for departure around 5:00 am on a Monday morning. To my shock, there was a 50 min or so line going into security. I have not seen one like that in a while. As we finally got to security I also noticed two of the security/x-ray lines were not staffed. I...

Its a "False Choice" to suggest health care is broken and this plan is the only fair way to provide health care to 30M. My biggest lesson from business is to look for solutions that mitigate risk, not create them. Given a choice of an Ivory tower perfect plan vs. a mundane partial solution derived from market feedback, I take the mundane. If the government wanted to deliver health care to more people, they should do what has worked in our economy (not Europe), like Health Savings Accounts.
