Michael Moore is a guy who starts with a marketable idea, and then can't resist the temptation to twist and distort the facts in an attempt to make it more marketable.

Can you imagine the hatchet job he'd do on a Bush/bin Laden connection film? By the time he's done, there will be a so-called "confidential source" claiming that George W. Bush and Osama bin Laden were gay lovers back in the '70s.

Jim McDermott is a Chickenhawk. He could have served courageously in the Navy hospital I helped to build, east of Da Nang. He could have treated wounded Marines. His services as a physician were needed. He could have saved lives.

Instead, he never left the United States. He spent his brief enlistment at Long Beach Naval Station as the chief psychiatrist, and never heard a shot fired in anger.

In fact, the number of Democrats in Congress and in the Clinton Administration who were actually in combat -- or at least in support services that were vital to our combat troops, and could have put them in harm's way -- is quite small.

When I was over there, I met a few Navy nurses when I was receiving medical treatment.

Nancy Pelosi could have been one of those Navy nurses. So could Barbara Boxer, Patty Murray, Dianne Feinstein, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Maxine Waters, Tammy Baldwin, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Patsy Mink, Maria Cantwell, Barbara Mikulski or Deborah Stabenow.

But they weren't. Not one Democratic woman in Congress or in the Clinton Administration ever served a day in the military.

Absolutely none of these Democrats voted against the resolution authorizing military action in Afghanistan. Almost all of them voted in favor of the resolution authorizing GW Bush to take military action in Iraq. Almost all of them also supported Bill Clinton's military deployments in Bosnia and Somalia.

I'm a former member of the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps. (It's absolutely nothing like the TV series, but A Few Good Men is fairly realistic.) I'm now professor of international law at a well-known university not far away from you, and I'm licensed to practice law.

I am required to take a certain number of hours of continuing legal education (CLE) classes each year, in order to remain a member in good standing of the state bar and keep my attorney's license. Since it's a professional requirement for our law faculty, the university underwrites all the costs.

My fees for the seminars are paid. Travel, lodging and meals are paid. If I were being paid by the hour, rather than a flat salary, I'd also be paid for the time spent in these seminars. And if I worked for a state university, it would be public tax money paying for all these expenses of my continuing education.

I hope this clears up the matter for you. If Abel claims that she was paid to attend the "Fistgate" seminar, I would say that she's probably telling the truth. And that would provide further support for the contention that it was a public gathering.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Other times, by God, it stings. Doesn't it?

I think the reason they're bashing Lott is that he's a conservative Republican and he's the Majority Leader. It unites the Al Sharpton gang, the feminists' gang, the gay rights gang and the gun control gang.

What I'm saying is that if the forces of the Left are going to ceaselessly attack Lott for his harmless comments, they should also clean their own house. African-Americans should be able to see this plainly: the Left is coddling its own unrepentant racists, and it only raises the issue of race when it can be used as a political stick, to bash someone like Lott.

If you think Lott should go because he is an ineffective leader, say so. I would probably agree with you. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Don Nickles of Oklahoma, or even Bill Frist of Tennessee would be a more effective Senate Majority Leader. They are tough scrappers and they have the cojones for the job.

In fact, Frist is remarkably photogenic and articulate. He could go even higher, to the White House in 2008.
