On the Learjet, the AFCS was engaged in pitch attitude hold with the aircraft trimmed to climb. The aircraft climbed to about 43,000 feet, where the Mach Trim system lowered the nose until the altitude bled off to around 40,000 feet. Thereafter, the aircraft continued to oscillate slowly between these altitude limits.

We don't know enough about the 737 accident yet. The AFCS may not have even been engaged. If one of the crew members had slumped over on the control yoke, it may have overridden the AFCS, or the AFCS may have disengaged.

The photograph with Clintoon is interesting. The woman to the right of 'toon was then KS Governor Joan Finney. Phelps reputation in Kansas (disbarment, failed attempts running for governor as a demo'rat) was well established. Finney should have known better than to be within spitting distance of that clown. I meant Phelps, not Clintoon. Ok, maybe both.

Every presidential candidate has to be from somewhere in the USA (Kerry being the exception).

During the 1988 campaign, I worked at a Fixed Base Operator on Houston's Hobby Airport. Various candidates would stop there, park their airplanes, and never buy a drop of fuel. Dukakis and Bentsen made one joint appearance and left - no effect on traffic. Bush 41 made one stop at Ellington AFB - no effect on traffic. Quayle made a morning stop at Hobby - no effect on traffic. Bentsen came every Friday at 3:30 PM, parked a 737 on our ramp (all other aircraft restricted from using our ramp). Then they would close the freeways between Hobby and Bentsen's hotel. Every Friday during afternoon rush hour - traffic would be snarled for the Bentson's six car motorcade.

I would get home from work at 7:00 PM. Guess who I voted for.

Stevens was nominated by Ford to appease the dims in the wake of Watergate. Souter was nominated because he had no paper trail like Robert Bork. (No paper trail = not enough data to determine character = way to hide a slug!) I don't know the circumstances of Kennedy's nomination. I would bet it was for equally stupid reasons.
