Moorhead, MN -- A controversial Kansas church plans to picket the funeral of a North Carolina-based marine who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

A church attorney says ten members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, plan to picket before the Camp Lejeune Marine's funeral in Moorhead, Minnesota.

The church blames the US government for a bomb that exploded on its compound in 1995.

The Westboro Baptist Church says it was bombed to stop its anti-gay preaching.

Church members say they protest at soldiers funerals to tie the deaths to the church bombing.

These are a very mentally ill bunch of people, primarily Fred Phelps' family members. Where's Janet Reno when we need her to excise some "cult" like Westboro Baptist as she did in Waco?

as a kansan i've had a few run ins with these folks....

remember when dealing with the insane-all they really want is the attenion we give them.

The Phelps Cult live for lawsuits.... picture a cult of scientologist lawyers who hate gays, blacks, hispanics, jews and catholics.

They also are paranoid to the extreme...everyone is out to get them and make them do naughty, nasty things...(Fred Sr. seems to have some serious issues based on his inordinate pre-occupation and fascination with man on man action...i'd rather not focus my life on buggery, but i'm a hopeless romantic)

still, if someone wants to sue 'em, go for it.
just realize that these goons have nothing better to do with their sad little lives.....

It probably COULD have been the government - the bomb apparently didn't get 'em all…

They had the distinction of infuriating both the Right and the Left that day in DC. About the only unity we had on that day.....

the "bombing" he refers to is one of his newer excuses....
much like the time the "evil JOOZ" tried to poison him....you do realize carbonated drinks are a zionist plot, don't you?

And then there was the time zionist and lesbians tried to infiltrate his church...or when the sweedish government put him on a hit list....and don't get them started on the vile plots of popery!

his kids went to Washburn in Topeka, and were slightly kooky then, but they have all the money and crazy they need to keep keepin' on for some time to come....
imagine Lyndon LaRouche off his meds, but with a gold card

We face FRED and his cult all around Topeka. They picket anywhere there is a crowd. The Oak Ridge Boys were stunned when Fred picketed their concert. His cult pickets at just about every Catholic church in Topeka and numerous other denomination every Sunday. They consider this their worship. Crazies around the country continue to send him money whenever he does these outrageous things.

Someone could turn on the sprinklers along the sidewalk, where these scumbags are marching. Of course, it would be a good idea to redirect the spray, so that it would soak anyone walking on the sidewalk.

Another possibility is for people to locate the motel, where these a$$holes are staying, and arrange a warm welcome for them. Items like super soakers, and rotten eggs are appropriate. If super soakers or the like are used, special attention should be devoted to adding dye to the water (though butyl mercaptan might be a nice touch).

Glad you posted the link. I've suspected that Phelps was a Dem plant for a while now. For the MSM and all of their lackeys, minions, and toadies, Phelps is a dream come true - a walking exemplar of their stereotype of Evangelical Christians. Don't be fooled.

He thinks God is punishing us in Iraq supposedly because the government bombed his church.

Just plain nuts for more than half of a century.

"These loons play into the left's plans to marginalize Christianity."

I'm sure their little sect was designed and formed for the purpose of destroying Cristianity from within, by pretending to be Christians while behaving like animals. It's all predicted in Scripture, "false teachers", "wolves in sheep's clothing", etc.

In fairness, no politician does background checks on all of their supporters. It is humorous that Algore was the one that got tangled up with Phelps.

The photograph with Clintoon is interesting. The woman to the right of 'toon was then KS Governor Joan Finney. Phelps reputation in Kansas (disbarment, failed attempts running for governor as a demo'rat) was well established. Finney should have known better than to be within spitting distance of that clown. I meant Phelps, not Clintoon. Ok, maybe both.

This group once protested out by us. We got together a few churches in the local area and made a deal with a local paper company.

Our protest against these freaks was three hundred people standing around them with blank 3'x4' placards. When asked by reporters, we noted that there just wasn't anything to say in response to folks who were so offensive.

Always wanted to pull the same stunt on MECHA.

I just hope that the PowerLine blog folks start rounding up a posse to counter Mr. Phelps and his clueless group of protesters when they do their protest in Minnesota.

What's really troubling is that the media shines a "Christian" spotlight on these people. I've read their beliefs at one of their web sites and these folks honestly believe that if you don't see it their way, you're doomed to hell. They believe that they are God's "elect" and that a verse like John 3:16 is only meant for them. They also refuse to respond to critical theological discussion regarding their interpretation of Scripture. They were up in New England recently and the cameras were just delighted to film those hate-mongering Christians. They're just what the liberal doctors ordered.

As long as this idiot Phelps gets attention and media articles attempting to make him a credible man of God he will persist.

Sadly offensive behavior gets more coverage then true investigative reporting these days.
