  • [Ben Sasse] My Statement on Wiretapping

    Twitter ^ | 1:20 PM 4 Mar 2017 | Ben Sasse
The President today made some very serious allegations, and the informed citizens that a republic requires deserve more information. If there were wiretaps of then-candidate Trump's organization or campaign, then it was either with FISA court authorization or without such authorization. If without, the President [Sasse is talking about Trump here, not his snideness Obama] should explain what sort of wiretap it was and how the knows this. It is possible that he was illegally tapped. On the other hand, if it was with a legal FISA Court order, then an application for surveillance exists that the Court found credible....

See linked video Herridge said that identifying the American caller for surveillance purposes, in this case Flynn, "needs sign-off at the highest levels." House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) said authorization would have been needed to unmask Flynn's name. "If in fact the press reports are right, someone made the decision to deliberately listen to General Flynn's phone calls," said Nunes, calling it "unprecedented, unwarranted and flat-out wrong."

    Foreign Affairs - Comment ^ | January 20, 2017 | Walter Russell Mead
...Both Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas seemed to think that they could surf the rising tide of Jeffersonian thinking during the Republican presidential primary. But Donald Trump sensed something that his political rivals failed to grasp: that the truly surging force in American politics wasn’t Jeffersonian minimalism. It was Jacksonian populist nationalism.... ....Many Jacksonians came to believe that the American establishment was no longer reliably patriotic, with “patriotism” defined as an instinctive loyalty to the well-being and values of Jacksonian America. And they were not wholly wrong, by their lights. Many Americans with cosmopolitan...

    Bipartisan Report ^ | January 27, 2017 | Olive Murphy
If there’s one thing we can say about Donald Trump, it’s that he’s unlike any other world leader we’ve seen to date. The problem, however, is that his differences fail to set him apart in a positive manner. Almost daily, Trump tweets about the “biased media,” “fake news,” or a world leader who has suddenly done something so terrible that he must take to Twitter to publicly berate them. Notice, however, that it’s always someone else with the problem. It’s never him. However, John D. Gartner, a registered psychotherapist from the renowned Johns Hopkins University Medical School seems to think...

The Hill - Congress Blog ^ | 01/17/17 | ELIZABETH SHERWOOD-RANDALL outgoing Deputy Secretary of Energy
When the Department of Energy was asked by the Agency Review Team to identify employees who work on climate change — one of the critical challenges of our time — our workforce rightly worried that the incoming team would judge them on ideology rather than merit. When the House voted to bring back the Holman Rule — allowing Members of Congress to selectively target individual federal workers or departments — our workforce became vulnerable to judgment based on ideology. When possible federal hiring freezes are mentioned casually, our workforce is concerned about its capacity to support our critical responsibilities. And...

The administration fired an employee for telling the truth to Congress, GOP lawmakers charged Tuesday, saying political appointees at the Energy Department were upset the woman backed a radiation program popular on Capitol Hill but which the department had planned to ax. Energy officials had hoped to cannibalize the money to fund global warming research... Dr. Metting was fired soon after the Oct. 16, 2014, briefing she delivered, and the House Science Committee says it has obtained documents showing the administration was upset at her for straying from pre-approved talking points. ...With more than 20 nominees now selected, Donald Trump’s cabinet appears much like the president-elect himself: mostly older, white males, many of them wealthy, who see themselves as risk-takers and deal-makers and prize action over deliberation. Trump, who says Washington is "broken" and controlled by special interests, has largely eschewed technocrats with long government experience. Instead, he has built a team of bosses. Trump's roster of agency heads and advisers conspicuously lacks intellectuals, lawyers, and academics of the sort sought by some past presidents...
  • Rick Perry Is the Wrong Choice for Energy Secretary

    New York Times - Opinion ^ | 9/13/2016 | Lawrence M. Kraus
… In terms of qualifications, Mr. Perry, a former governor of Texas, doesn’t come close to his immediate predecessors. He would follow President Obama’s two energy secretaries: first, Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate physicist, and then Ernest J. Moniz, a distinguished nuclear physicist from M.I.T. There are reasons the appointment of scientists to this position was and is particularly appropriate, especially now. While investment in new sources of energy (a subject on which both Mr. Chu and Mr. Moniz are experts) is a part of the energy secretary’s portfolio, by far the largest part of the department’s budget involves the...

Summary - Ash Carter, Frank Kendall and Robert Work bury a Defense Business Board / McKinsey report that $125 B is wasted on bloated bureaucracy in particular supported by hordes of overpaid contractors. Frank Kendall was“very disappointed” by the board’s work, which he criticized as “shallow” and “very low on content.” He said the study had ignored efforts by his agencies to become more efficient." Kendall said he needs 1000 more people working directly under him. Peter Cook, a spokesman for Carter, said the Pentagon chief was busy dealing with “a long list of national security challenges.” He added that...

I want to thank Albion Wilde for her excellent work in maintaining the the Make America Great Again pinglist. All of us were much better informed for her efforts to sort through all the posts and choose the most important and relevant. This is the kind of exercise of private journalism that has helped us and Trump to overcome the bias of the established media. Again to Albion Wilde, thanks, well done and we are in your debt.

It took me a long time to write this. I had to dig deep into my being to come up with these words. I’m recanting my endorsement of Hillary Clinton for the presidency. I’m aware of how vindictive Clintonians can be. I’m not speaking about the Clintons themselves, but of those surrounding them. Perhaps the saying is true: dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.

A full, sweeping, comprehensive code of ethics and she should mean it, and it...
