MENLO PARK, Calif., - A California startup analyzing food on a molecular level announced some hard news about one of the most beloved foods in the United States: 2 percent of hot dogs contain human DNA. Clear Food, the consumer guide wing of Menlo Park startup Clear Labs, said it analysed 345 hot dogs and sausages from 75 brands sold at 10 different retailers and discovered 14.4 percent of the products included ingredients that were not listed on the label. The startup said several of the tested brands had "hygienic" issues. "Hygienic issues occur when some sort of non-harmful contaminant...

The nation's largest producer of turkeys is warning of a shortage of birds, just in time for Thanksgiving. Butterball announced that it will be shipping out half as many large, fresh never-frozen turkeys to retailers this year. The company says many of its birds had trouble gaining weight during the production process. And though the cause of the problem remains a mystery, food distributors say their orders for turkeys 16 pounds and bigger have been slashed in half. Sixteen pounds is the national average for Thanksgiving holiday turkeys making this shortage a particularly concerning problem.

SPRINGFIELD - Butterball has just announced to officials at supermarkets around the country, including Big Y World Class Markets, that there is a national shortage of their large fresh (unfrozen) turkeys for this Thanksgiving. A mistake was made in the production of fresh Butterball brand turkeys this year and the company has cut every retailer's allotment by 50 percent, said Claire D'Amour-Daley, Big Y vice president of of corporate communications. The cut represents thousands of turkeys that would have been shipped to Big Y. The same goes for every other retailer, she said. Butterball's corporate offices did not return calls...

LONGMONT -- The closing of Longmont's Butterball plant at the end of the year marks the end of a 51-year run for Longmont's turkey plant. More importantly, it means 349 people are joining the ranks of the unemployed. One of them is Abundio Canales, 63, a Longmont resident who has operated machinery at Butterball for 19 years. Both he and his wife work at the plant, and both will start the new year looking for work. Canales said he plans to learn English better and would like to take some computer classes, but he's concerned about his wife being able...

Thanksgiving jihad? Butterball sells sharia friendly halal turkeys Thanksgiving is turkey time, yet many Americans are unaware that the turkey on the menu may be halal, meaning it is slaughtered according to the dictates of sharia, the religious law of Islam. On Monday, reports began circulating around the web that one of America’s largest producers of thanksgiving turkeys, Butterball, slaughters turkeys according to the dictates of sharia law. And apparently Butterball has confirmed the rumor: all Butterball whole turkeys sold in the U.S. are slaughtered in accord with halal, and thus satisfy sharia, Islamic religious law. Halal is a term...

Apologies if this has already been postedAs you sit down with your family on Thanksgiving and consider offering a prayer of gratitude, be aware the turkey at the center of the table may have already been "blessed" – in the name of Allah. Customer service representatives from Butterball, one of America's most popular Turkey brands, confirmed to WND that the company's whole turkeys are – without being labeled as such – slaughtered according to Islamic "halal" standards. "Halal slaughter involves cutting the trachea, the esophagus and the jugular vein and letting the blood drain out while saying, 'Bismillah allahu akbar'...

Did you know that the turkey you're going to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day this Thursday is probably halal? If it's a Butterball turkey, then it certainly is. I discovered that only two plants in the U.S. that perform halal slaughter keep the halal meat separated from the non-halal meat. At other meat-packing plants, animals are slaughtered following halal requirements, but then only a small bit of the meat is actually labeled halal. Wendy Howze, a Butterball Consumer Response Representative, responded: "Our whole turkeys are certified halal." Halal slaughter involves cutting the trachea, the esophagus, and the jugular vein, and letting...

As if the death of a family member weren't heart-wrenching enough, relatives of an obese Indiana woman were outraged Tuesday over the way the county coroner handled her death. Hours after the death of 48-year-old Teresa Smith, who weighed over 750 pounds, a flatbed truck was sent to her apartment to retrieve the body, FOX affiliate WXIN-TV reported. The Marion County deputy coroner told the station that it was their only option because of her weight.
