Independent Rep. Justin Amash said during a Sunday morning interview with CNN's Jake Tapper that he would have left the Republican Party even if Donald Trump were not president. Amash announced he was leaving the party in a Washington Post op-ed published on the Fourth of July. "You didn’t mention President Trump in your op-ed in the Post but you did say you believe the GOP stood for limited government and economic freedom until recent years," Tapper began. "Do you think you would be leaving the Republican Party if Donald Trump were not president?"

President Trump celebrated the news Thursday that Michigan Rep. Justin Amash is leaving the Republican Party, saying the GOP was better off without the "disloyal" lawmaker. "Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is 'quitting' the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn’t get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan. Already being challenged for his seat. A total loser!," the president tweeted.

One month after Donald Trump took his oath of office, Rep. Justin Amash (R–Mich.) pinned at the top of his very active Twitter feed George Washington's famous farewell address warning against "the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally." This morning, not seven weeks after breaking ranks with this party in calling for impeachment proceedings against the president, Amash announced in a Washington Post op-ed that he's leaving the GOP and declaring himself an independent. "Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party," the five-term congressman wrote. "No matter your circumstance, I'm asking you to join...

Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash announced Monday evening he is leaving the influential conservative House Freedom Caucus, just weeks after he attracted the ire of his colleagues by arguing in Twitter posts that President Trump had committed impeachable offenses, Fox News has learned.

Why does he hate Trump so much? While I doubt it, I will ask. Is this anyway a principled stance he is taking?

Rep. Justin Amash is celebrating this Fourth of July in a manner years in the making: by declaring his independence from the Republican Party. “No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us,” Amash wrote in a Washington Post op-ed posted Thursday morning. “I’m asking you to believe that we can do better than this two-party system — and to work toward it. If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it.” Amash, perhaps the most fiscally conservative member of Congress, has increasingly been...

Michigan state representative Jim Lower is advertising himself as a pro-Trump conservative, but he is closely tied to former Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, who led the ‘Never Trump’ movement in Michigan with Reps. Justin Amash and Fred Upton heading into the 2016 election. Lower even boasted that he would model himself after Justin Amash when he first won elected office, claiming that following in Amash’s lead would “give the citizens in the county some input and see each and every vote.” Lower claims “he grew “disenchanted” with Amash after he came out against Trump after repeatedly voting for Amash and...

President Donald Trump's son is planning to campaign against the only Republican congressman who has called for his father's impeachment. Donald Trump Jr. will be heading to Michigan to fight Rep. Justin Amash in a primary battle, people close to the Trump Organization executive told CNBC on the condition of anonymity. This comes after Trump's son tweeted out a poll showing Amash losing to his only challenger so far in the race, state legislator Jim Lower, and hinting he will be heading to the Wolverine State to take on the four-term lawmaker. "See you soon Justin... I hear Michigan is...

Nothing would better encapsulate the GOP’s political turn over this past decade than watching the most hardcore small-government Republican in Congress get obliterated in a primary because he’s worried that the president committed a crime.I wonder if he’ll stick around and accept this beating as a matter of principle or announce his retirement before the election. If he retires, he’ll spare himself the embarrassment of defeat but be seen as running from a fight. If he runs again, he’ll show that he’s defiant to the end but very likely end up humiliated on Primary Day, to Trump’s great satisfaction.Alternate...

Full title: Hans von Spakovsky: House Dem zealots ignore facts to wrongly cite Trump Cabinet members for contemptA House committee vote Wednesday holding the attorney general and commerce secretary in contempt for failing to turn over confidential documents dealing with a lawsuit involving the U.S. census was political gamesmanship of the worst kind by Democrats. In a 24-15 vote, all Democrats on the House Oversight and Reform Committee voted to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress for failing to respond to the committee’s subpoena. Republican Justin Amash of Michigan – who has...

Michigan State Rep. Jim Lower announced in May that he will be mounting a primary challenge against Rep. Justin Amash over his comments about impeaching President Donald Trump — and the previously little known politician is already polling ahead of the longtime congressman. Amash made national headlines after he called for the impeachment of President Trump, becoming the first GOP congressman or senator to do so. Soon after his statements, Lower announced that he will be sitting out the race for his third term in the state senate and will instead be running for the 3rd Congressional District seat that...

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) has opted to quit the House Freedom Caucus in the wake of his comments in support of moving forward with impeachment proceedings. The Freedom Caucus voted to condemn the Michigan Republican's remarks last month, but the group opted not to force him out despite a divide among members. Amash was the first — and only — Republican House member to publicly say he thought President Trump had committed impeachable offenses after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. He has since doubled down multiple times on his statement...

Republicans for the Rule of Law is airing the ad on "Fox & Friends" on Monday, ahead of the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing with Watergate star witness and former Nixon White House counsel John Dean to discuss the evidence of potential obstruction uncovered by special counsel Robert Mueller. “When Nixon was alleged to have obstructed justice, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee took these allegations seriously,” the ad begins. Radio personality Glenn Beck over the weekend lavished praise on Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), expressing hope that the libertarian congressman runs for president in 2024 in the wake of his remarks about President Donald Trump and impeachment.

He’s right, although all complaints about Barr’s summary ultimately have to reckon with the fact that (a) he released nearly the entire Mueller report within three weeks of its submission, (b) the baseline finding, that there wasn’t probable cause to believe Trump conspired with Russia, tore the heart out of Russiagate suspicions, and therefore (c) it’s hard to believe that Barr’s characterization of Mueller’s findings mattered much to public opinion. Nothing seems to matter much to public opinion when it comes to Trump, after all.Although I think I know what Amash would say to all of that: Who cares?...

The powerful DeVos family said on May 22 that it will no longer provide financial backing to a Michigan congressman who is the first and only Republican to call for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. DeVos family members have not donated to Rep. Justin Amash (D-Mich.) during the current campaign cycle and do not plan to do so in the future, according to the spokesman for the family’s RDV Corp., Nick Wasmiller. After Amash accused Trump of impeachable conduct, two pro-Trump Republicans announced they will challenge him in the state’s primary election. Amash has not faced a primary challenge...
