There was a time when racism could be funny. On Jan. 12, 1971, a skittish CBS television network premiered an unusual television show as a mid-season replacement in its primetime lineup. The sitcom, modeled on a successful British version, starred veteran actor Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker, a bigoted dockworker living in Astoria with his dimwitted wife, feminist daughter and liberal son-in-law. “The program you are about to see called ‘All in the Family,’ ” read a text advisory before the show (it would now be termed a trigger warning). “It seeks to throw a humorous spotlight on frailties, prejudices,...

[Norman Lear wryly titled his memoir Even This I Get to Experience (out Oct. 14, Penguin) as a wink to his belief that even the bad times in his life were worthwhile because they made the living interesting. And over the course of 92 years, Lear has led as interesting a life as anyone in Hollywood. Born in 1922 in Connecticut, Lear lived with relatives for a time while his father spent three years in jail from 1931 to 1934 for a dodgy get-rich-quick scheme...] [All in the Family: Season 2 Carroll O'Connor's insecurities and fears drove him to great...

Jean Stapleton, a born-and-bred New Yorker immortalized in pop culture as the iconic Edith Bunker, died Friday in her Manhattan home at the age of 90. snipToday’s Queens is arguably America’s most diverse county. snipBut what of “All in the Family” creator Norman Lear? Well, according to the ZIP code listed on his political contributions, Lear lives in the Brentwood hills of Los Angeles — ZIP code 90049, to be exact. That neighborhood’s population? It’s 84 percent white, 1.4 percent black, 8.7 percent Asian, with the remainder “other” and multiracial. That almost looks like Archie Bunker’s dream spot.

PC would prevent something like it from getting on the air today. Norman Lear transferred the British show "Till Death Do Us Part" very accurately - same characters with different names. The former had started airing in the U.K. in 1965. Nixon can be heard discussing the show on one of the Watergate tapes. T-shirts, buttons, and bumper stickers showing O'Connor's image and promoting "Archie Bunker for President" appeared at the time of the 1972 presidential election. Archie Bunker received votes as a write-in candidate.

The inlaws would like a word to help us define our relationships. Is there a name for the relationship the parents have to each other? We are more like sisters than inlaws. Explaining the marriages makes your brain explode so we'd like to find a short name to tell the story more succinctly. My daughter is her brother's cousin in-law. My son is his sister's cousin in-law. My daughter's mother in law is her brother's aunt. My son's mother in-law is his sister's aunt.

President Clinton is a big fan of "24" even though "an uber right-wing guy" produces the Emmy-winning political thriller. Clinton told TV advertisers Friday that his favorite show is the medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," and he appreciates "Boston Legal" for the dynamic between William Shatner and James Spader. "It's something to behold," he said. As for "24," which was co-created by noted Republican Joel Surnow, Clinton said he enjoys the fact that conservatives and liberals alike can be the bad guys in the show. "They're trying to be fair," Clinton said. His other must-see TV shows include "All in the...
