Support Our Troops (Holiday Ideas)
DoD News Release ^ | 12/12/2002

Posted on 12/12/2002 4:07:58 PM PST by Jen

With the holidays approaching, thousands of Americans are again asking what they can do to show their support for servicemembers, especially those serving overseas in this time of war. Below are Web sites for several organizations that are sponsoring programs for members of the Armed Forces overseas. While it would be inappropriate for the Department of Defense to endorse any specifically, servicemembers do value and appreciate such expressions of support:

Donate a calling card to help keep servicemembers in touch with their families at Operation Uplink.

Send a greeting via e-mail through Operation Dear Abby.

Sign a virtual thank you card at the Defend America Web site.

Make a donation to one of the military relief societies:

Army Emergency Relief

Navy/Marine Relief Society

Air Force Aid Society

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance

Donate to "Operation USO Care Package"

Support the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services

Volunteer at a VA Hospital to honor veterans who bore the lamp of freedom in past conflicts.

Reach out to military families in your community, especially those with a loved one overseas.

Please do not flood the military mail system with letters, cards, and gifts. Due to security concerns and transportation constraints, the Department cannot accept items to be mailed to "Any Servicemember". Some people have tried to avoid this prohibition by sending large numbers of packages to an individual servicemember's address, which however well intentioned, clogs the mail and causes unneccessary delays.

The support and generosity of the American people has touched the lives of many servicemembers, over 300,000 of whom are deployed overseas.

We are having a Christmas party for our BSA troop at the Veterans home that is connected to the VA hospital. The boys and family members will be singing Christmas carols, and sharing a tri tip dinner with some of them. They will be handing out Christmas cards to the ones that are bed ridden.
This could become a tradition for some Boy Scout, Girl Scout, homeschool, AWANA, or youth groups. We are providing the meal for our group and 25 of the veterans. The meal cost can be divided by the families, or have the group buy the main dish and make the other stuff potluck.
Last year we did Christmas carols and cookies, they loved it. The veterans sang right along with the boys. After the singing was over the vets want to spend time with the boys asking about scouting and the different badges that the boys had earned.

That is wonderful! I bet the vets were so happy to spend time with the kids. What a fantastic thing to teach the kids about giving. I hope they keep the tradition up. :)

Would you fellas consider pinging your lists to help get the word out about these ways people can show their support to our troops?

I think JH2 is still having 'puter problems. I'm playin' Ketchup, my usual mode of late (lol), and will be happy to ping with my list, FRiend !

Thanks for the ping. Personally, we'll be spending Christmas with our daughter and son-in-law (Army - Ft. Levenworth). Our son-in-law wants to get back into hunting after an extended tour in Germany, so we plan to find a Christmas shotgun for him. That will lead to a trip over to the Sportsman's Club to shoot a few clay pigeons and then a walk through the woods looking for a rabbit or grouse. Support for our troops starts with the home and family.

So well said! Go find a good sorghum or wheat field with a lot of stubble, and watch what happens when the pheasant flush!! That was about the best scare I ever had at Ft. Riley!

Tell your son-in-law we thank him for his service...please?
