Worked in V.A. clinics in the past. They were treated like ####. That was hard to watch.

The fact that Trump fixed the crap I saw is one of the major reason why I respect him so much.

i think it’s the new “have a nice day” Most people don’t mean it- they just feel like they have to say something.

What prompts me to say "Thank you for your service" is seeing a vet wearing the baseball cap that identifies them as a veteran. I would think that if they don't want to be thanked for their service, they wouldn't be wearing the cap.

My view is that if you want to thank me for my service, tell me how you encouraged your son/daughter to join the US Military.

. I did. I raised a US Marine. My greatest accomplishment.

I’m a Vietnam vet and a retired nurse. I am sorry but nurses do not wake up for 365 days in a row and wonder if today will be the day I die. But if you rant makes you feel better fine.

Absolutely agree - raising children who grow up to take the same oath I took — is a proud accomplishment.

MY oldest- a daughter - was Army Reserve - combat medic -then became an Nurse Corps officer. Mobilized twice to serve in the ICU at Madigan Hospital. (She got allergies and asthma -and had to leave after 10 years.)

My next - a son- followed me to become a Submarine Officer. BUT - he did it with so much more style. Graduated from the Naval Academy - and got his M.S. EE at Naval Postgraduate School....then went to nuclear power training.

My third child - another son - decided to enlist in the Army - and went Airborne Infanty - did a tour in Iraq - got his Ranger tab- then 3 years later - got accepted into the Army Aviator program - now he flies for the Army.

When I meet veterans, and working in a hospital ER I meet a number of them(because many of them wear caps with the branch they served with) I'll say “I like your cap’’.

They say “Thanks’’. Mostly I meet men who were Korean War vets, Vietnam vets and occasionally WW2 vets, although, sadly because of the passage of time, WW2 vets are a rarity. I introduce myself, they respond in the same fashion. I ask innocuous questions, nothing probing or too personal. I don't dwell too much on asking questions. I'll mention family members who have served and then say "God bless you'', smile and take my leave.

Yes, the families deserve credit also for yours and their sacrifice. I had never thought much about the families part of the equation other than seeing a wife and kids waiting for their husband/father to return home.

Sadly, there are people out there that “served” but were actually slackers and law-breakers. (Not saying your FIL is/was).

Today, these same law-breakers now proudly claim their unearned veterans status for free diners on Veterans day. These same guys snicker at the rubes dumb enough to thank them for there service. Those dishonorable blobs of lies and deceit are proud that they scammed the system during their time in service, and now they laugh up their sleeve at all those thank them for their service.
I’ve seen them. Sitting in some diner, with an obligatory “veterans” hat, and wearing a scruffy old uniform shirt with holes.

Many of those guys may be homeless and tormented by demons, and for them I pray.

It is the ones who are fakers, the liars, the fake veterans that shamelessly scarf their free meal. They may have served at one time, but as I sat near a group of those guys, I heard them brag about how they scammed the service and got away with it. I’m not talking about a little here and there bending a rule, I’m talking about guys that brag about being dope-smokers (or worse) in the rear.

I also recall seeing a guy that is clearly young and wearing a Vietnam veterans cap. All for a free meal. Dishonorable and shameless.

Thank you for your time and attention.

"I volunteered at Walter Reed on Ward 52, the amputation ward during the Afghan war."

I THANK YOU for your dedication and service to our Wounded Warriors. Not sure I could do the same without tearing up every day.

“nurses do not wake up for 365 days in a row and wonder if today will be the day I die.”

Perhaps, but they do wake up every day praying that they don’t make a mistake and someone dies.

As I’ve posted before, nurses define the quality of your medical care. The better that care, the easier/better your recovery.

I’ve been an in-patient at the VA hospital in Long Beach, and in the night, no one around, I left because nurses played games with meds and controlled patients by withholding pain meds.

Guys crying and screaming because of the pain, and obama’s sisters they laughed about the suffering vet. I filed an IG complaint and the IG had the obama sister hospital director investigate herself (nothing to see here).

I checked myself out and went to the airport and flew home to Texas. Immediately, went to a private hospital where nurses were caring and professional. I was in a comfortable environment and recovered quickly.

Like all hospitals, docs breeze in (you never know when), yammer some words, don’t want to discuss the situation with you, then they leave. . .and nurses are the ones that actually do medicine, they are the ones that take care of you.

A nurse actually saved my life, twice. In one case, if she remained silent the doc would have killed me because of his error.

Bottom line, they may not face dying when they wake up, but they face death daily.

IMHO. . .

The “Graduates” would come to visit alot. They would strutt down the hall, showing of their prosthetic legs and arms. They would talk to the “Newbie” and their devastated families. After awhile the would say “We gotta go know. We have an appointment to go wind surfing on the Chesapeake. Next year YOU are coming with us.”

They lift the patients spirits and mine!!

Yogi Barre visited.

Patraeus came often. The patients loved him. Many generals would come on to the ward, with this “Look at me!” Patraeus wasn’t like that all. He was there for his men.

Fort Hood shooter was there at the time. He was creepy. How they didn’t weed him out is beyond me.

I got back 9/67 to Chicago, a very conflicted 25th Inf Div. PltLdr(LRRP)
Heard alota BS, but never a Thx. Yrs down the road when i began hearing “Thx for your Service” I was numb & could find no honest reply. I finally witnessed someone respond with a sincere,
“YOU... were worth it “!!, & I knew I’d finally found my own personal, heartfelt reply.

So, that’s what I do now ... Stop ....turn...look the person STRAIGHT in the eye, & say those words... “YOU (pause) WERE WORTH IT.”
If the ‘Thank You for your Service’ had been sincere & heartfelt, I can read it all over their face immediately. Off’times they’ll choke up themselves as they receive such a personal, Patriotic offering/response/understanding.
We connect as Patriotic, Loving, Respectful, Citizens of our beloved USA.

We have (almost) something in common - a Marine raised me!

Your post reminded me of my all-time favorite bumper sticker, which I saw a couple of months ago: “Some people never get to meet their hero. I raised mine. Proud military mom.”
