When I meet veterans, and working in a hospital ER I meet a number of them(because many of them wear caps with the branch they served with) I'll say “I like your cap’’.

They say “Thanks’’. Mostly I meet men who were Korean War vets, Vietnam vets and occasionally WW2 vets, although, sadly because of the passage of time, WW2 vets are a rarity. I introduce myself, they respond in the same fashion. I ask innocuous questions, nothing probing or too personal. I don't dwell too much on asking questions. I'll mention family members who have served and then say "God bless you'', smile and take my leave.
