The University of Missouri-Columbia is expecting at least a 14-percent decline in incoming freshmen this fall, resulting in its smallest class in nearly two decades.
Administrators project that about 4,000 freshmen will enroll in August. Thats down by about 700 students from 2016 and significantly lower than in 2015, when more than 6,000 enrolled.
The shrinking numbers have been tied at least partly to the protests on campus in 2015 that followed reports of racism on and near campus.
The school issued a news release Friday afternoon that mentions the enrollment decline only indirectly.
A class of this size gives us the ability to think carefully about our long-term enrollment planning, said Garnett Stokes, interim chancellor, in a prepared statement.
As part of our planning process, we will be determining the optimum freshman class size for Fall 2018 and future years. This will help us develop and create strong and renewable resources, targeting our students best interests as we educate the future leaders of our state and nation.
The news release focuses on the universitys success in retaining students, with 94 percent re-enrolling. The school also said it is maintaining high academic quality, with incoming freshmen posting an average ACT score of 25.5.
Last week, curators of the University of Missouri four-campus system were alerted to a $9 million expected decline in tuition revenue at Mizzou. At the time, enrollment estimates were not available.

Time to call in John Tapper of Bar Rescue for a make over and relaunch.
I’ve heard from Mizzou parents they’ve had to shutter seven dormitories.
Conversely, I suspect recent violence at UC Berkeley won’t affect enrollment there one bit. Parents are just as bad as the kids.
A few more years of this and Missouri may have to apply for designation as an historically black college.
I was there in the fall of ‘72. Memories may vary ;-)
Tell us the demographic breakdown- the lower enrollment and that info would tell us something. Lower numbers by itself is pretty meaningless- other than that enrollment is lower.
I think the demographics would be quite telling. Mizzou has completed it’s descent into political correctness- those with any intellect and drive will go elsewhere- with a better education outcome to boot.
When one-third of the future enrollment is lost in two years, it makes one wonder why parents of the two-thirds entering Mizzou aren’t smarter.
That would be appropriate.
Liberals destroy everything they touch. Instead of the Midas Touch, they have the Fecal Touch.
Early 60’s. Yep, we’re old.
Regarding Berkeley — the general feeling among Californians who don’t even think of themselves as liberal, is that UC Berkeley and the other top UC campus programs have no equal across the country and despite some “campus culture” problem issues they will all pay through the nose to have their kids go to these “top flight” schools.
Eliminate the football team. Use the money to make up for the loss in tuition.
Even then - the damage done to the school and the loss of alumni donations will never be overcome.
Parents are not paying though the nose to have their kids go to UC Berkeley. Students (their parents) pay a low in-state rate. Thus there are very few private colleges in California.
More interestingly, the claim that they're maintaining academic quality is puzzling, given this statistic (from The Daily Caller): Mizzou has seen a 7.7 percent reduction in applications from students with composite ACT scores of 30 or higher (typically the 95th percentile).
I want to see a long list of schools that are crashing because of this leftist garbage.
Perhaps We shold make a list of schools that are candidates to be boycotted.

Well I guess 35k a year with Boarding for in State is chump change to you. 61k a year for the Chinese to send there best and brightest.
I don’t know where you get your estimate of $35,000 for in-state tuition. Last I knew tuition at UC Berkeley was about $13 - 14,000 a year.
A kid working hard in high school could take AP courses and graduate in 3 years. Alternatively, they could go to a community college for the first year and a half at a much lower cost and if they do well transfer to the university. With financial aid the cost would be much lower.
And now what?
I’ll bet they would charge students who didn’t apply to Missou who could have with racism, if they could get away with it.
What % are female?
BTW, here's something else topical for fall.
That’s down a third in two years. Oops.
