Cardinal Egan Shuts Down Exorcism Ministry in NY Archdiocese
This just in from Mark Shea's web log:
Goodbye to NY Exorcists
I'm told by sources that Cdl. Egan is shutting down the ministry of exorcism in New York. Dunno why. It does sort of seem to me like getting rid of all the fire extinguishers in a burning building in order to cut costs. I suspect bureaucrats with little pastoral experience (like Egan) just don't really believe in the reality of spiritual warfare and view the office as rather lurid and dramatic (and a waste of money). I hope his successor wises up and reinstitutes the office. It's not for nothing that Cardinal O'Connor appointed these guys. The devil is real, as this past year should have made clear to Cdl. Egan.

I also read his book and found it to be very informative. I often wonder with all the so-called "mental illness" running rampant these days if in some cases it is just some form of possession. So many people don't want to believe that evil does truly exist and possession by evil demons is certainly possible.
St. Michael watch over us all!

I think it was G.K. Chesterton or C.S. Lewis who said that Satan's greatest accomplishment of the 20th century was the number of people who now believe he doesn't exist.

Similar to his other great accomplishment: convincing people that his religion (secular humanism/egocentric paganism) isn't a religion, but a 'lifestyle choice'...

St. Michael watch over us all! Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou O prince of the heavenly host
By the power of God cast into Hell Satan
and all the evil spirits that prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Pope Leo asked all Catholics to say this prayer after every Mass. It was dropped right after Vatican II. Since then the devil has had a field day. Our family says this prayer together during the prayers after every Mass and at the end of our family rosary.

I have a message that father_elijah sent my father some time ago which says that Cardinal Egan was not a man to be trusted in any circumstance. I know that Cardinal Egan ordered the shut down of the exorcists some months ago for a period of three years.
This isn't just about Cardinal Egan being a beaurocrat. This is about Cardinal Egan being a witting or an unwitting accomplice to evil.

I knew I disliked that man the minute I saw him. I wish he and Bishop Murphy would go back to whatever place they came from.
New York needs good Catholic leaders like John Cardinal O'Connor. Too bad the pope didn't think so.

Maximilian hit it on the nose in post #26.
Prayer and fasting, along with fidelity and vigilance.
The Prayer to St. Michael is sooooooo powerful. It is an evil act that shelved its recitation. I remember in the '50s saying it after every Mass, and as part of rosaries and devotions and novenas. We need it now more than ever.
But let US not lose faith, brothers and sister. Does anyone recall the history of the Arian Heresy. At one point, nearly 97% of the bishops were of Arian or semi-Arian persuasion. Just the Pope (St. Damasus I) and a scattering of faithful Bishops (3%) and Deacons defended the faith as we know it.
John Paul II is our Pope, the Vicar of Christ; in union with him through the Power of the Holy Spirit, we will persevere.

God will protect the Church from destruction. That doesn't mean He won't allow Her to burn Herself when She touches the gates of hell. The scars and burns are what allows Her members to repent and face God again.

It's not for nothing that Cardinal O'Connor appointed these guys. The devil is real, as this past year should have made clear to Cdl. Egan. You're right, Polycarp, on all three points. As CS Lewis said, Satan's greatest victory is getting us to believe he does not exist.

A strong and goodly prayer against evil, Maximilian, and one that I shall commit to memory. Thank you.

All true, but not easy to bear...Bearing the cross never is. I know. I fight the battles with you. But it makes us strong, brothers.
We must always remember, His grace is sufficient.

A strong and goodly prayer against evil, Maximilian, and one that I shall commit to memory. Thank you.The fact that this prayer is new to a traditional Catholic like you is a sign of how much we have lost in the Church. I'm not intending any personal criticism, in fact I had never heard of this prayer until just a few years ago. My children started attending a Catholic school which said the prayer to St. Michael as part of their morning prayers. At that time I had never even heard that such a prayer existed, nonetheless have it memorized.
Yet this was a prayer that within my lifetime had been required to be said by all Catholics after every low Mass (the very early part of my lifetime, that's why I had never heard it before). Within just a few years it had disappeared as though it had never existed.
