The fact that this prayer is new to a traditional Catholic like you is a sign of how much we have lost in the Church. I'm not intending any personal criticism, in fact I had never heard of this prayer until just a few years ago. My children started attending a Catholic school which said the prayer to St. Michael as part of their morning prayers. At that time I had never even heard that such a prayer existed, nonetheless have it memorized.
Yet this was a prayer that within my lifetime had been required to be said by all Catholics after every low Mass (the very early part of my lifetime, that's why I had never heard it before). Within just a few years it had disappeared as though it had never existed.
