I work with someone who is an (apologies if this is not the right term) observant Jew.

Now would be a wonderful time to buy her a gift. Marty Barrack has written a book entitled Second Exodus.

It's funny... my grandparents (one now deceased) were/are daily Mass goers and very devout and their best friends on this earth were/are (one deceased) Jewish. In fact, at my grandpa's wake, the surviving friend sat next to my grandma and held her hand during the prayer. Aunt E is very loved in my house. And her husband was a wonderful mensch.

We have more in common with the Jews than anyone else. People will say no, but it's true.

Try this truly excellent book, The Nazarene, by Isreal Zoller, who was the Chief Rabbi of Rome and became Catholic after WWII, for he saw the way Pope Pius XII and the Italian people help hide Jewish people from the Nazi's.

His conversion name was Eugenio Zolli, and this book explains in ways no one but a hebrew scholar could some of the sayings of Jesus.

Also, a good read to befuddle the born-again crowd since many of Jesus' sayings are not directly found in the Old Testament, but in Rabbinic tradition.

She said that what spoke to her were the ancient traditions and reverence for them; and that she found in them found many parallels to her own Jewish faith.

There are parallels in certain aspects of worship and ritual. But in matters of theology there are profound differences. (Although occasionally I do like to teasingly call my Christian friends "TRJ's" -- 'trinitarian reform Jews'). ;o)

It works both ways, friend. A few notable cases, both ancient and modern.

Hardly.Your sources are questionable.

No, thank you. I am familiar with the story, though.

My father is Catholic and my mother is Jewish. I was raised Christian and didn't revert to Judaism until adulthood. I am happy as a Jew. And I pray that any Jew who considers converting really takes the time to explore our own faith first.

You guys are unbelievable - you'll be claiming that the Catholic Church was founded by a Jew next, and no doubt you've all got a Jewish mother as well!!!!!!

Hardly.Your sources are questionable.

I beg your pardon? Would you care to substantiate this assertion? Some of these people are still alive, and undoubtedly would be surprised to learn that they didn't actually convert.

You may not like it, but you cannot reject the evidence out of hand.

As I said to haole, I myself was raised Catholic, and 'reverted' to Judaism as an adult. Am I mistaken about my own experience as well?

Amazingly enough.... and no doubt you've all got a Jewish mother as well!!!!!!

Well, sort of. My mother may be Catholic, but she grew up in a largely Jewish neighborhood. And, to an extent, so did I. One of the benefits is knowing how to use the word "kvetch" in a sentence.

Salvation by one set of laws is the same as salvation by another set of laws..even the Pope realized that, that is why he said not to bother evangelizing them .What he doesn't realize is no one is saved by adherence to laws...Jews or Catholic.........so in the long room there is no difference
