Announcing a laity Review Board with Frank Keating, (R) of Oklahoma as the presider of that Review Board. They will hear the cases in situations to remove a priest. I am not sure of the two other announced members.

I love Frank Keating and I love William Bennett most of all... don't know the woman, but if these two are any indication of the quality of the board, we are in business because these guys are ORTHODOX Catholics - not CINOs. In fact, Keating mentioned that he is concerned with the quality of the teachers (in the Catholic school context) who will be teaching his future grandchildren.
I have a feeling that yes, thank God, there are wonderful holy men and women amongst the laity who will "rise up" - even the orthodox Bishops and Cardinals are kind of hamstrung in a way - but the laity is not!
As Bishop Gregory explained it, I think the "bill" is very good - it is zero tolerance and I don't know what the problem is with it. I keep hearing people on the radio and tv complaining that it doesn't go far enough... I guess they want public hangings with no trial...
I believe the main complaint is that it does not punish the Cardinals and Bishops that covered up - but, how can they punish themselves? And I am sure some kind of censure or stepping down is around the corner - the past couple of days were meant to deal with victims and priests only, I believe.
Let us hope that they will do 9 months to a year of fasting and penance rather than just the one propsed day!

Bishop Gallante talked to someone from the press and said that the Holy See was following everything over the wire, email, whatever. He inferred rather than outrightly stated, that the Holy See would be forthcoming with censure.
Do you think that many Catholics wanted a denunciation of homesexuality to come out of this also. I do, and the one email that I sent to EWTN addressed that issue.

I think the public and those who would like to do away with the Catholic Church would love seeing public hangings and/or no trials. I do believe that they are seeking accountability on the parts of the Bishops and Cardinals, however.

This means that (a) the bishops and, presumably, the Cardinals are home free; and (b) we're still paying the salaries for dysfunctional gay men who, after putting the make on a young teenage boy (young enough so he counts as a victim of pedophilia - otherwise, there's no points at all), get to go off and spend the rest of their lives buggering others of their pursuasion in a "monastery" - like St. John's, where one of the monks is, if I recall correctly, under investigation in a homosexual murder.
Somehow, I'm just not impressed.
I think that can of worms was publicly opened by Bishop B. Those Bishops and Cardinals are on notice that the laity and some of them are concerned with dissention and one of the fruits of dissention, homosexual prevelance in the seminaries/priesthood. That said, I think the whole meeting was meant only to address the welfare and safety of the children (boys) and other issues will be addressed at another time - it would have watered down the entire meeting to bring in anything else, IMO. But they cannot tarry too long on the other issues or they will have big problems - the laity is really fired up on both sides, I think.
This abomination did not happen overnight in the Catholic Church overnight, and it will not be cured or taken care of in one Conference.

The Cardinals cannot discipline themselves as a body, can they? I mean, that would be sort of odd. Who knows what went on behind the scenes... we will know soon enough. Plus, do you know what hell Cardinal Law's life has been like here in Boston? It might be worse for him if he stays on.
Good point about us supporting the offending priests... however - they can't let them out on the streets and the guilty ones will presumably be in jail anyway.

Likely no more of a coincidence than that the USCCB conference is being held in Dallas, home of the nation's largest gay/lesbian church.

Hairshirts would be good for a start. Do they make those anymore? Hey! They could have the victims make the hairshirts for the Bishops.
I e-mailed Bishop Bruskewitz (ok, the Diocese of Lincoln, which was the only option) to praise him for his attempt to get that into the final statement. American colleen said she intended to.
I would love to see him get so many e-mail commendations for his stand that they'll "have to weigh 'em, not count 'em," as a local Boston pol once said about the votes he got.
I am indeed. But my addiction to FR has passed the early, relatively innocent stages.
