The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

It appears to me that you're dealing with issues here that have nothing to do with the interpretation of scripture.

It appears to me that you're misusing scripture and, like the RC's, are making up stuff that isn't there.

Best not start posting any Slamtoons. If this thread gets yanked before 50K we may have Armageddon on our hands.

Lol, I pity the poor sap who's been preparing his post for the last two weeks, and finally finishes all 4 pages, and then it gets posted in the midst of the 50 spam post holocaust that says, "I got number 50,000" Wooieeee.

No one will even know there was a real post somewhere in the mix. Lol

There is much else besides that Jesus did' if all of it wer4e put into writing, I do not think that the world itself would contain the books that would have to be written. Please understand that I do not think that revelation is limited to what is found in Scripture, only that Scripture is revelation.

When looked at, in light of God commands to write in the Old Testament, plus a few others I neglected to mentioned from the New Testament, a very compelling case can be made for the written Word of God.

Not to mention one of the main tasks of the disciples:

Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

The word translated "preached" as these meanings:

1) to be a herald, to officiate as a herald
1a) to proclaim after the manner of a herald
1b) always with the suggestion of formality, gravity and an authority which must be listened to and obeyed
2) to publish, proclaim openly: something which has been done
3) used of the public proclamation of the gospel and matters pertaining to it, made by John the Baptist, by Jesus, by the apostles and other Christian teachers

What better way to proclaim and publish the truth then to set it down in writing? Oral tradition wouldn't effectively do the job Christ commanded we do.

These are the nastiest things bandied about on this thread:

"You are not a Christian"
"You are a Pagan"
"You are not Saved"
etc.

They are not commonly uttered by Dave or any Catholic I can recall, but certainly are a commonplace from NCs

I have a database of almost 50,000 Neverending posts and, since I don't have the same perception as you, I decided to do a search on your terms.

Results follow:

"You are not a Christian"

I found one. Coincidentally from a Calvinist who has been banned from this thread, to an NC,

"You are not a Christian Doug...You belong to a cult..Your doctrine is a heresy."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"You are a Pagan"

I found none. None!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"You are not Saved"

I did find a few.

"Baptism .. now saves us" means that without baptism you are not saved. So Baptism removes Original Sin. Those who die in sin go to hell."

Not nasty, and posted by that wild NC, SoothingDave.
................................................................................

"If you are not saved forever, then you are not saved. Let me say it again. If you are not saved forever, then you are not saved."

Posted by JHavard, contained in a paper by Hank Lindstrum, pastor Calvary Community Church of Tampa. FL.
......................................................................................

"If you do not believe in your own salvation by/because of the power of God, you are not saved."

Posted by Becky.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can't guarantee that I have found all instances but I am relatively certain I have done so.

Pretty nasty stuff isn't it?

Unless you can show otherwise I think you owe all NC's, who you have falsely accused, an apology.

"John 1 verse 1. He is the book"

Are you really saying that "the Word" as used in John means both Jesus and the Bible and that you believe Jesus IS the Bible?

"There you go again with this "any" business. With certain of you guys, it's all or none. Everything's digital, on or off. Either He elevates her above all mankind, or he shows no affection for her. Either she's to be venerated, or we loathe her."

Uh, before you go on a rant against me, perhaps you'd be so kind as to actually check out the post to which I was responding. To wit:

"Could that explain why there doesn't seem to be even one affectionate sounding communique between Jesus and his mother?"(emphasis mine)

In other words, geezer, is was one of 'you guys' who went the all or nothing route, not me. Care to launch a rant against him?

You know, at one time, I was a regular participant on these threads. I left because, frankly, I found the hatred, animosity, and ill-will eminating from the other side to be literally spiritually harmful. I started to view all Protestants through the prism of my experience here on FR.

Since then, I've found it best to visit only occasionally and to keep my visits to around two to three weeks. Posts such as yours confirm the wisdom of this practice.

Excuse me? You asked that I cite scripture, which I did. Try to deal with it in a little more civil manner and I would be happy to continue the colloquy. Sophmoric name calling, however, is not an evangelical technique used by our Lord nor suggested by Him to his disciples.

Sorry. I didn't call you stupid. I called your interpretation stupid. I've heard it before and it holds no water. In fact, It borders on being disengenuous. I'm running out of patience with this kind of crap.

Very nice citations, but it still doesn't give me one where Jesus, Himself, commands the writing of the Gospels, the collection of the epistles, etc. What they do tell me is that God commanded the writing of parts of the Bible. However, using this logic, then God (in this case, the Holy Spirit) commanded Luke to include the verse in Luke in which Mary is called 'blessed by all generations.' Since our God is One, then Jesus DID show significant affection for His mother.

Indeed, were you correct that Jesus showed not even one communique of affection for His mother, than you would have to argue Jesus was acting opposite the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit certainly shows affection for Mary by inspiring Luke to include Chapters 1 and 2. Finally, if you are right that Jesus saw the future -and I would argue you are- then so, too, did the Holy Spirit. And if God truly WERE concerned about Catholic devotion to Mary, then most certainly he would have had Luke edit out his first two chapters. After all, its not in the other three gospels. Thus, the scriptural evidence shows God obviously ISN'T concerned about our practice else those verses wouldn't be there.

But even this isn't the most interesting thing to come from this little exercise. What's really interesting is that as I write this, no Protestant has denied they worship the Bible.

I believe if you expand your search terms you may get a few more results that, while not exact quotes, carry the same meaning. For advice on how best to conduct the search, I might suggest asking how Havoc prefers to intimate that Catholics are not Christian, or that those who say the Rosary are Pagans. You might also ask Steven to clarify how one could belong to a paganized church and conduct ceremonies to Pagan dieties and not be a pagan. Lastly, I seem to recall several instances where BigMac has held that it is damning to hold to a theology that requires works, he may have a preferred phraseology as well.

Nevertheless, knowing as I do how the rest of you do consider us RCs to be members in good standing in the Christian brotherhood, I do freely apologise to anyone out there who feels they need one, most especialy those listed here, and thank you Reggie for taking the trouble to dispel my misperception.

Sorry.

Sorry. First of all, I made the mistake of lumping y'all together with your digital cohort, SoothingDave (as he so often does with certain of us). Then, to make matters worse, I made the mistake of expecting you would have quoted any significant parts of the post to which you were replying. I should have instead read the post myself. In fact, I'd intended to do so prior to posting my reply, but got sidetracked by something else, never to return. Mea culpa.

hatred, animosity, and ill-will

Whoa. Such thin skin.

See ya.

Do you have any scripture for this? Althought I didn't call you a name last I read was Jesus calling Pharisees "whitewashed walls". I'd rather be called stupid.

Pretty much what you say, here. But it doesn't mean the Bible is Jesus or that Jesus is the Bible.
