Saturday afternoon, just a day after posting his displeasure with the ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria, President Trump threatened that country's government should it fail to protect the religious minority there.

Posting on Truth Social, the president stated, "If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, 'guns-a-blazing,' to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities."

Trump said he wants the U.S. military to be ready for possible deployment, saying, "I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!"

• Obama influenced the 2015 Nigerian presidential election between incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan (a Christian from the oil-rich, predominantly Christian south) against Muhammadu Buhari (a Muslim from the north). David Axelrod's firm AKPD provided consulting services to Buhari's APC party.
• The 2015 election was overshadowed by Boko Haram, an Islamist insurgency that had killed thousands and kidnapped over 200 Chibok schoolgirls in 2014.
• President Goodluck Jonathan was criticized by the Obama administration for human rights abuses by Nigerian forces fighting Boko Haram (e.g., extrajudicial killings), leading to withheld arms sales under the Leahy Amendment.
• Opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari was a former military dictator (1983–1985) who positioned himself as a reformer against extremism, despite past Islamist ties.
• Nigeria has roughly 7,000–13,000 militants in Islamic terror groups like Boko Haram and roughly 35,000–40,000 other bandits and militia members, including Fulani herdsman. The US could apply political pressure on the Nigerian government to stop the violence, while supporting Nigerian forces with advanced intelligence and overwhelming force without US boots on the ground.
