Pope Rebuked For Claiming The Heart Is Inherently Good: ‘Jesus Taught To The Contrary’
Harbingers Daily ^ | 5/24/24 | Decision Magazine

Pope Francis is under fire after claiming that human beings are “fundamentally good” in a recent interview with 60 Minutes host Norah O’ Donnell. “We are all fundamentally good,” he said. “Yes, there are some rogues and sinners, but the heart itself is good.”

Evangelical leaders have pointed out that the pontiff’s statements are contrary to the teaching of original sin, one of Christianity’s basic doctrines. “If this is true, we don’t need a Savior to die on the Cross,” wrote Eric Metaxas, best-selling author and national radio host.

Alluding to the pope’s statements in light of the 24/7 news cycle, Southern Baptist Convention President Bart Barber posted on X: “The remainder of the content of this news program and all the other programming on your TV suggests otherwise. And certainly Jesus taught to the contrary.”

Allie Beth Stuckey, conservative Christian author and podcast host, pointed out that the Bible refutes Pope Francis’ claims that humanity is inherently good. She quoted Mark 10:18—“No one is good except God alone”—and Jeremiah 17:9—“The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick”—among other verses. “This is core to Christianity,” Stuckey wrote. “Because if everyone is basically good, the Gospel is not good news. If the Gospel is not good news, what’s the point?”

Some X users also noted that Pope Francis’ statement echoed Pelagianism, a heresy spread by 5th century monk Pelagius and his followers. They denied original sin and taught that human beings are completely free to choose between good and evil.

Franklin Graham speaks out regularly on sin—and how it is the root cause of every problem in our world. “There is no place in the human heart or on the Earth where sin hasn’t wrought its deadly work,” he writes. “Sin brought death, both physical and spiritual, to the entire human race. When you took your first breath, outside your mother’s womb, you were already a sinner, alienated and separated from a holy God.”

But the Good News of the Gospel is that sin does not need to have the last word. As Franklin pointed out last week at the U.S. Capitol, during the unveiling of his father’s statue: “God so loved this world that He sent His Son on a rescue mission to save sinners. He didn’t come to condemn; He came to save. And if we would confess our sins and repent and believe on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we can be saved.”

= = =

We all know what BS is. It communicates clearly - this is BS (spelled out is better, but . . .)

Now we have PS, spelled out is Pope S___.

Or, to be Biblical, “Skubalon”, as Paul would say.

So what is new here?

The Catholic Church succumbed to Hellenistic humanism many centuries ago. The theocentric thought captured in Scripture started to be officially replaced as early as Ambrose. Superstition and idolatrious veneration of relics and saints filled the void. It got to the point reading scripture in the vernacular was punished and only the clerical ranks knew Latin, so much of the masses were kept ignorant of the good news and power of the Gospel. It’s heartbreaking.

When the Reformation came and the reformers wanted to get back to Scripture the Catholic response was the Council of Trent. Trent by declaring the Reformers anathema in essence declared the Pauline epistles anathema. Trent’s declarations locked themselves into all their accumulated errors and now they can’t reform even if they wanted to. Trent locked into the same works/merit heresy as the Galatians; one that Paul condemned.

That’s kind of odd since he was duly elected by the Church and Gregory the VII claimed any Pope duly elected had sainthood.

Even this pope isn’t fundamentally good, he hates.

He knows little to nothing about the gospel. He is a lightweight fraud.

The bigger problem is the cardinals that voted him in to be Pope. So there’s that.

Yes, every true Catholic believes in Original Sin. It is a foundational tenet of our faith. We believe that the Sacrament of Baptism removes Original Sin and restores us to God's grace, and that therefore, Baptism is required for salvation.

Except when it isn't.

How many exceptions does Roman Catholicism have for those who die without benefit of baptism?

Just confirming what our belief is. I’m not gonna get in a doctrinal debate. You can do your own research by reading the early fathers of the church.

Why not just stick with the Bible? The ECFs are not inspired writers and their opinions often contradict Roman Catholic theology.

No he doesn’t, the passage is inclination to sin. Total depravety is not a Catholic Doctrine.

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

2in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

4But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

Eph 2:1-6 NASB

It is God Who acts to redeem the individual.

On his own an individual does not seek God....yet it is God Who seeks the individual.

Your own personal interpretation of the scriptures.

“Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.”

Romans 2:14-15

[[Who said “Why do you call me good?”]]

It is important to understand that Jesus wasn’t saying that he himself wasn’t good, and that ‘only God above is Good”- He was saying in effect that “IF you call me good, and only God is good, then I am God”, and was trying to tell the young ruler that he didn’t have a complete enough view of who Jesus really was

“This ruler, by his mode of accosting our Lord, showed that he had not as yet a right faith in him - that he did not believe in his Godhead. Our Lord, therefore, desired to rouse him and lift him up to a higher faith. He seems to say to him, “If you call me good, believe that I am God; for no one is good, intrinsically good, but God.”

Thank you!

I don’t get why “they” believe God isn’t enough.

This current pope is a heretical goofball. Who’s to say some or all of those ECFs aren’t just as heretical?

Are ECFs the guys in the Catholic threads with names like Bede and Chrysalis, etc.? They don’t post Scripture.

“Total depravety is not a Catholic Doctrine.”

Yes, you are quite right. It isn’t. It is merely a scriptural doctrine with which catholic doctrine chooses to disagree because of all the centuries of accretion of bad doctrine. Trent is where the accretions were set in concrete to defend the infallibility of the papacy.

It gets to be embarrassing when the pope veers off course as badly as this one has ... but it has happened before.

Interesting you point to sriptures, Total Depravity as a doctrine is Calvanist Tradition, not every christian denomination believes it either. Are they not biblical because they don’t keep a Calvanist doctrine?

Clavanists have only been around like what? 500 years? Too bad many bible believers were not around until then.

How do you know which books are included in the Bible?

The OT was already in place during the 1st century and did not include the Apocrypha.

The bulk of Paul's writings were agreed to as Scripture in the 1st century. The remaining books were in place before the middle 1st century.

Rome only finalized their canon at Trent in the 1500s.

However, the issue is that of inspiration. The books of the NT are agreed to by everyone. The bulk of the OT is agreed to by most.

Not one of the ECFs Rome like to cite is considered inspired.

Your argument, even leaving aside the bad grammar and bad spelling, is nonsensical.

Besides which, I am not a Calvinist.
