Mark 1
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy

40 A man with leprosy[h] came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41 Jesus was indignant.[i] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

Some Stories About Contagion:

1. Cooties: One of the biggest insults of my childhood was the epithet of "Cooties". We didn't know what they were, but we knew that they were disgusting. If one wanted to insult or bully someone, all one had to do was declare that they had "Cooties" and that poor kid was anathematized for the entire day. We had no idea that "cooties" were head lice, something the school nurse was always checking for by running a tongue depressor through our hair. I always thought she was just checking that our Moms washed our hair. I never made the connection. But "Cooties" were another thing entirely. There were "Girl Cooties", "Boy Cooties" "Dog Cooties", and general all-purpose Cooties that were the very nastiest things you could wish on anybody.

I was of the Generation that still had Veterans from World War 1. These elderly gents had fought in the trenches of what was once called "The War To End All Wars". They were always given a place of honor in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Boston, and had their own special float shaped like a giant BUG. They had strange little hats that looked like a handkerchief tied at the corners. And the name of their organization was "THE COOTIES"! I am not making this up. Why would these heroes name themselves that? I asked Mom.

"These men fought in WW1 in the TRENCHES. They were surrounded by mud, blood, and dead bodies. Rats, fleas, and lice were their constant torment. They named themselves 'The Cooties' to remind us all of what they went through."

It was then that I realized that "Cooties" were head lice. Nasty, and very contagious.

In the Peanuts comic strip, Lucy Van Pelt was very afraid of "Dog Germs" and would recoil if Snoopy gave her a kiss. That was reminiscent of my own generation's horror of "Cooties".

2. Who Was That Masked Man? Zorro, Batman, and The Lone Ranger were my childhood heroes. All of them wore masks to hide their "Secret Identity". Superman had a secret identity too, but only used glasses to disguise himself. As if that would fool anybody! These masks didn't cover their mouth or nose, so they had nothing to do with contagious diseases. And Zorro (Guy Williams) had a Beautiful Smile. He was my first CRUSH.

Now, on this third year after COVID, I still see some people wearing masks, even though the government has declared the "emergency" over.

Without getting into a discussion about the efficacy of masks, vaccines, or social distancing, it has been shown from studies that young children have shown much slower development in social and language skills due to being masked and being surrounded by others wearing masks. This is a serious issue, and might not have an immediate remedy. It must have seemed to these little children that they, their parents, and everybody else, had "Cooties". I have noticed it in some of my own students, whose parents vigorously enforced masking.

3. Leprosy: The footnotes in my Bible dance around such loaded words as "Leprosy", "Leper", and "Leprous". These footnotes attempt to minimize the loathing associated with Leprosy, now known as "Hanson's Disease". The footnotes , both in the Old and New Testaments are something like this:

"Various skin diseases". But, although "various skin diseases" were dealt with in Leviticus, with descriptions of lesions, spots, baldness, and scars, it is of my opinion that "Leprosy" in the Bible refers to "Leprosy" or Hanson's Disease, which is very specific, contagious, and, at the time, had no treatment available. Isolation and Quarantine were the only way to deal with it at the time. The disease not only was contagious, but also brought spiritual defilement. Anyone who touched a person with Leprosy was considered "Unclean" until that person had gone through a ritual cleansing and presented himself to the Priest, who would pronounce him "Clean". There was also a provision for a person who had become healed of the disease. That is why Jesus told the recently healed Leper to "Show Himself to the Priest."

The Disciples were horrified that the Leper dared to approach Jesus. Here was their Teacher, their Master, and their Religious Leader, about to be defiled. By extension, they too would be unclean.

One of the things that the Leper said was:

"If you are willing..."

Different translations record Jesus' reaction to this. Some say He was "Indignant". Others say He was "filled with compassion." I think it was both. He was filled with compassion for the man, but indignant as to how the Law of Moses had been misused to isolate and abuse people because of a disease. Just my thoughts.

Jesus wasn't going to let "Cooties" get in the way of Love for our fellow man.

I agree. As one of those "elderly", I have experienced this myself. Also, I am hearing impaired, and the mask makes it nearly impossible for me to understand people when they talk to me. I didn't realize how much I had been relying on reading lips.
