They are making examples of the the more high profile folks. But guess what? Traditional Catholics are used to being abused and treated with contempt by the radicals who have been dismembering the Church for the past five decades. This is typical behavior from them. Emphasize mercy, but practice harsh punishment. But God has numbered the days of the elderly 1960s radicals and their reign of terror will be over soon.
This is the natural result of assigning to tradition the same authority as they do to scripture.
The Pope says what is tradition; therefore the Pope’s authority is elevated to that of scripture.
