Catholics Don't Believe You Can Earn Your Way to Heaven
Tradition | 03-06-2022 | CharlesOconnell

A man commits a serious crime, then he gets released. He has "paid his debt to society". But wait a minute, he's only ready for the half-way house. He's unlikely to get a prestigious job in his new prison suit coat, or any job at all; he has civil impediments, he can't vote or hold certain offices. His crime was serious enough that he won't be presumed to have been completely rehabilitated until he performs a notable service to society, or at least spends many years on the straight and narrow, so that his crime can be truly overlooked or forgotten.

In Catholic faith, your "debt to society" is paid by Jesus Christ on Calvary. It's called "eternal punishment", without Christ it keeps you from going to heaven. Supposing that you do take advantage of His sacrifice, you're truly sorry, have a firm purpose of amendment, if you relapse, you go again for forgiveness (to the Sacrament of Confession).

But your sin leaves a strong trace at another layer of impurity called "temporal punishment due to sin", like the civil impediments facing the half-way house prisoner. Because "nothing impure can enter heaven", there is a place or a state, a condition of purification to render you fit for heaven after Christ has finally saved you from hell. The Catholic Church calls it purgatory.

(Where is it in the bible? Where is the word Trinity in the bible? Where does it say that you only need a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Many valid principles aren't stated explicitly in the bible, but it does say to "hold fast to the traditions you have learned, whether by word or by letter", because much of the Gospel wasn't written down, as Jesus only wrote in the sand, the majority of the Gospel was taught from word to ear to people who couldn't afford expensive books, the exceptions were what tended to get written down. But the implication that there is a purgatory, is contained in the bible--see the comments.)

The ex-con can receive a pardon or commutation of his probation from a Governor, if he performs some heroic deed, saving numerous lives, or, like Chuck Colson, performs a long-lasting, valuable community service helping numerous people who can't help themselves.

In the Catholic Church there are 2 ways for the residual, temporal effects due to sin to be expiated: suffering in this life, or after life, undergoing purifying suffering along with other people who will finally be saved, but have to suffer for long without the vision of God--that is what causes them their pain.

Their suffering isn't meritorious enough to grant their release, the saints in heaven and those on earth suffering and practicing virtue can pray for the suffering souls in purgatory. In no way is their release by slow transfer of suffering or practice of virtue, "buying heaven". It's a long, excruciating process.

How the misunderstanding arose that Catholics think they can buy their way into heaven, is involved with history more than 500 years old. For a millennium of Christendom between roughly 410 and 1410, there was a Medieval civilization with harmony between faith and government.

Many small farmers would cluster around the manor house of a military lord who would protect them, in exchange for a certain fixed obligation of labor and agricultural produce. In most cases, those "serfs" had much more leisure than factory workers of the industrial revolution; there were a large number of holy days without work, and except for planting and harvesting, there were long stretches of idle time.

Another large sector of the economy surrounded monasteries, where the monks developed most of the farming practices that stabilized the serfs and their manorial lords. The monks who worked those monastic lands were sworn to poverty, so that monasteries built up large accumulations of economic value over decades and centuries of labor.

At the beginning, when lands were being cleared and put into production there weren't prominent town fairs ruled by merchants and bankers. Money wasn't used for sustenance, not even much barter occurred, life was mostly agrarian.

Charity was woven into the economy of monasteries. It was estimated that you only need travel 12 miles in medieval England between monasteries, where you could get a meal and minimal lodging for free, based on need. And the charity was also spiritual, including the ancient Catholic principle of prayer for the dead, which is biblical. (See "prayer for the dead" in the original King James Bible in the comment.)

There were foundations and benefices for praying for the dead, that allowed a person of means to support monasteries' charitable works, and in proportional response the monks would pray for the souls of the donors.

It happened at the close of the middle ages, that militarily strong nobles cast their eyes on the labor value accumulated by the poverty-sworn monks of the monasteries, which those nobles perceived as monetary wealth, especially where gold and jewels had been donated by the devout to adorn churches.

(Protestant writer William Cobbett wrote in his 1824 "A History of the Protestant Reformation in England and Ireland", an anecdote, that an incredibly valuable, hand illustrated bible was stripped of it's bejeweled, gold cover, the much more valuable hand-illumined manuscript, thrown in the mud and trampled by horses hooves by raiders suppressing the monasteries in Henry VIII's England.)

A new religion growing up around this seizure of monastic lands and valuables, that sought to discredit the Catholic Church, spread the black legend that the "sale of indulgences" was abusive. But this was very exceptional. Today the stipend of a Mass said for the dead is $10.

The same Bible in no way restricts or limits The Prince of Peace from doing whatever he deems necessary for the salvation and exaltation of God’s children.

Then these two men (angels?) were lying:

ACTS 1:9-11 KJV

9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

And of course our conversation, should there be one, still will not address the mountain of confusion that exists in the so called Christian Community of individual religion.

True, as I imagine that the confusion that exists in the various sects of MormonISM is enough to keep you busy.

With the Mormons (to be precise, the members of The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - based in Salt Lake City) intent on being called “Christians” after so many years of eschewing that word, and despite the fact that there are so many fundamental theological differences between Christianity and Mormonism, I often wonder:

How do members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feel about calling the members of its various spin-off sects Latter-Day Saints, Christians, or Mormons? Or about those sects calling themselves Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? (There was an earlier campaign by LDS to have journalism style books use the word “Mormon” to refer only to LDS, and not RLDS, FLDS, or other LDS sects).

For a man who bragged about holding things together, Joseph Smith, Jr. doesn’t appear go have done a good job of it during his lifetime. Wycam Clark’s “Pure Church of Christ” spun off in 1831. This trend continued. There were six LDS sects spawned in the 1830s, eight in the 1840s, two in the 1850s, and seven in the 1860s.

Do those responsible for the “Mormons are Christians” campaign consider these denominations to be Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? Surely many of these denominations are much closer to mainstream LDS than LDS is to Christianity. Many stick to Smith’s teachings and old temple endowment ceremonies.

Are members of those LDS groups “Mormons”? “Latter Day Saints?” “Christians?”

Do the folks in Salt Lake City have a problem with any of those groups, who believe in the restoration of the original church by Joseph Smith, calling themselves Mormons or Saints?

Most of these divisions in the Latter-Day Saint movement occurred over the issue of polygamy or succession of the Prophet. Sects broke off when Joseph Smith was still alive, and when Brigham Young was named prophet, because they didn’t believe in the practice of plural marriage – either publicly, or in some cases when it was practiced in private and denied in public.

Of course, there was the great split between Rocky Mountain Saints and Prairie Saints, when LDS members couldn’t agree on a successor prophet to Smith, Jr., and the church went to Utah, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania under Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon (senior member of the First Presidency), James Strang, Lyman Wight, Alpheus Cutler, William Smith, David Whitmer (a BOM witness), or Joseph Smith III (son of Joseph Smith, Jr.). Almost all of these individuals still has multiple sects in existence that date to an 1844 decision about who should be the next President/Prophet of the church.

The Prairie Saints split into sects over the issue of whether Smith practiced polygamy. Rocky Mountain Saints had many, many spinoff sects after the 1890 Manifesto – groups that still practice plural marriage.

How do those gnats taste, LC? You did not get it even as you wrote the post quoting from many Bible versions. The words ‘for then’ refer to what is coming. But that may be over your head, so I will just stop and watch as you wriggle around with the Mormon obsession, which does not appear to have anything to do with the topic under discussion at this point in the thread. Have nice day, LC.

If you want to argue with these writers of biblical text; then be my guest...

1 Thessalonians 4:13
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

Daniel 12:2
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52
Listen, I tell you a mystery:
We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

Looks like Scripture disagrees with the Catholic (and others) claim that believers are in heaven RIGHT NOW; doesn't it!

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 King James Version (KJV)

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Can you explain to me just where the dead in Christ are located right now?

LC, do you believe we have a body, a soul / behavior mechanism, and a spriit? Can you find any scripture that shows a person sins AFTER the body is dead? Do you believe what John taught, that God abides in our spirit after He births us from above?

Your confusion posting indicates you do not have a proper understanding of the spiritual characteristic of every human being. Jesus did not go to the cross to redeem your soul / behavior mechanism. He went to that cross to redeem your spirit. That spirit has a spirit body, according to Paul. That spirit is not held in the ground upon death. The soul probably is, in some way. Ask yourself, where is Jesus now? What does PAul write in 1 Thess 4:13-18? The Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven ... those who have died in Christ GOD will bring with Him as He descends from Heaven with a shout. If GOD is bringing the dead in Christ WITH Jesus, where are those spirits coming from?

Their spirit, because the Holy Spirit is abiding therein, are IN HEAVEN with The Lord, without a glorified body. The transformation is the receiving of a glorified body and behavior mechanism.

1 Thess 4:13-17 And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, that ye may not sorrow, as also the rest who have not hope,

for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also God those asleep through Jesus he will bring with him,

for this to you we say in the word of the Lord, that we who are living -- who do remain over to the presence of the Lord -- may not precede those asleep,

because the Lord himself, in a shout, in the voice of a chief-messenger, and in the trump of God, shall come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ shall rise first,

then we who are living, who are remaining over, together with them shall be caught away in clouds to meet the Lord in air, and so always with the Lord we shall be;

So you see TWO locations of the dead in Christ! The spirit has God abiding therein, so the born again spiriut is not asleep in the earth. God wuill bring them, their spirit, WITH JESUS as He descends from Heaven. [The verses are from the Young's Literal Translation]

he Old Testament is not about the Mosaic Law,

That premise is false.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
King James Version

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Matthew 5:17-19
King James Version

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

For both Gentile and the new group of humans other than Jews and Gentiles is the Body of Regenerated Servants of Jesus the Messiah and Lord (= true Christians) saved by their trust in him.

This, and everything from every angry reply is all known to me. Not one of you attempting to correct me presented anything of which I am not already aware. You were so busy trying to correct me you failed to perceive my purpose.

The local body of which I am part spends hours every week pouring over the scriptures. We have just completed a three year study of Hebrews. That was after completing a two year study of Galatians. Before those were many similar studies from both the Tanakh and the Apostolic writings. I assure you we are as fully in Messiah as are you.

The attempts to label me were amusing. The attempts to convince yourselves I was one and the same as others with whom you disagreed was even more amusing. The liberal use of the word cult was the most amusing of all. I do have to confess the more colorful replies caused me smile.

The persistence in claiming and addressing things I did not say, answering questions I did not ask, assuming intentions I did not have, and assuming I was seeking information indicate I failed to make myself understood. So be it.

I have long observed some of the members of this group and almost always it is the same for anyone who does not seem to completely agree. I suspect most or all of you belong to sects with which I have some disputes. I am aware there will be those who have some disputes with me. I am also aware we have some very important things in common. I suggest we all find healthier ways to converse that our witness not be in vain.

Don’t whine because our answer doesn’t fit the SDA internet argument script you’re using.

Learn how to reply to answers you don’t want to hear.

Or get used to being laughed at.

You ignored my pasted passages.. I stopped counting after 20 verses where Christ is seated at the Right Hand of the Father.
Is God the Father on this bema seat as well?

2 Corinthians 5:10, Paul gives the Corinthian church an illustration of the Bema Seat, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”

What you are calling bema seat is Matthew 25, just wordsmithEed to arrive at a conclusion.
Someone is just repackaging scripture for a "new and improved" product.

The term, Bema Seat, is taken from the Greek word for judgment, bēma. So you won’t find it in English translations. It is from the Greek text.

Oh I go to the greek all the time for the translation game- as I did today in my limited research- and I suggest you do as well...
As Strong's will tell you that your understanding of the word is incorrect... it gets translated as a "judgement seat"... like "Kathedras" does... but has a specific physical characteristic to it.

From Strongs- learned today that "bematos" - bema in the Greek means:
Definition: a step, raised place, by implication a tribunal Usage: an elevated place ascended by steps, a throne, tribunal.

Doesn't really matter though, it's just more scriptural extrapolation of the modern era.

God gives the believer plenty of assurance of their salvation. When one is born again, we are saved NOW, in this present moment. Even Jesus told those who had faith in Him that they were saved, past tense, as in *Your faith has saved you*.

God gives assurance if we Obey his commandments. If we don’t- not so much.

Peter says: repent and be baptized.
For Baptism now SAVES you...
Christ gave Peter the commission to forgive sins...
Totally unnecessary if all we have to do is proclaim ourselves "saved":

We're talking about 2 different religions here.
