San Diego’s Bishop Says Catholic Church Does Not Condone Religious Exemption to COVID Vaccines

San Diego’s Bishop Says Catholic Church Does Not Condone Religious Exemption to COVID Vaccines

San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy said Thursday the Catholic church supports COVID-19 vaccinations and priests must “caringly decline” any requests from parishioners seeking a religious exemption.

“Such a declaration is particularly problematic because the Holy See has made it clear that receiving the COVID vaccine is perfectly consistent with Catholic faith, and indeed laudatory in light of the common good in this time of pandemic,” wrote McElroy in a letter on Wednesday to priests.

The Diocese of San Diego said there have been reports from California and around the country of priests being pressured to sign a form prepared by the Colorado Catholic Conference suggesting that there is a basis in Catholic teaching that justifies a religious exemption to receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI received their COVID-19 vaccinations in January. McElroy received his in February.

San Diego Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan participated in the drug studies that resulted in the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

“My greatest worry is that signing this declaration [from the Colorado Catholic Conference] thrusts our priests into the impossible position of asserting that ‘the Catholic Church’s teachings may lead individual Catholics…to decline certain vaccines’ when those priests recognize that Catholic teaching proclaims just the opposite,” said McElroy.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego runs the length of California’s border with Mexico and serves more than 1.3 million Catholics in San Diego and Imperial counties. It includes 98 parishes and 49 elementary and secondary schools

what kind of an idiot do they have in San Diego?!

It was Bergoglio who promoted him and put him in San Diego.

Every human being of sound mind has a duty to God and self to take reasonable care of their health. If it also benefits others, which is usually the case, great.

But unproven treatments are not ordinary and there are many reasons one can, and even should, refuse suçh experimental treatments. No one has the right to make such decisions for others, not doctors or bishops or bureaucrats or presidents.

That also means though that if one refuses to take treatment, they have a serious duty to protect others by masking, isolating or whatever appropriate.

McElroy is one of the most notorious of the pro-gay bishops.

Religious exemption is not based on what your pastor or priest says.

He speaks for no one but himself.

I’m Catholic and I say I have a religious exemption. No one can prove me wrong. It has NOTHING to do with what the church says. Only I get to decide my religious exemption.

Let the church condemn be and be damned!

Christ didn’t found the Roman Catholic Church. They lost their way when they made a deal with the Romans

Except Catholics don’t get to claim random things are a matter of religious exemption. This is not a pop up religion which has undefined and “whatever you think is fine positions.” Its definitely a poster child for organized and defined religion.

I’m sympathetic to the freedom argument. But if that is what you are based upon. You gotta have a better Catholic directed argument. Does a vaccine do unjust violence to the human dignity owed to a person? That would be a fine start for me.

Catholics have to be arguing correctly.

Of what are you speaking about here? “Deal with the Romans”

I know of no deal with the Romans at all.

Where are you getting this mistaken information?

the vaccines have aborted baby parts....I guess that isn’t catholic doctrine anymore?

you’re not sympathetic; you’re an apologist for tyranny and making excuses for people NOT to have freedom.

Because it should not be a “religious” exemption. It should be a “conscience” objection. A person can be an atheist, agnostic, or a member of any religion and still conclude the vax is morally problematic. The Church’s catechism states vaccines must never be forced or coerced against a person’s individual conscience.

You know, that deal! The one where the Romans Crucified Our Lord, tortured and killed His Apostles (Bishops), priests, and faithful for centuries. THAT deal!

“you’re not sympathetic; you’re an apologist for tyranny and making excuses for people NOT to have freedom.”

You’re ignorant.

Not all the Vaccines contain aborted baby parts. While that is deplorable at all. It would not be possible to make a blanket “No Vaccine” exemption therefore.

For the cold. Your nuts. Too many here are nuts. This isn’t the plague, it’s a bad cold. The death counts are BS. Flu gone. Pneumonia gone. All rolled up into a masking, experimental vax, bs democrats narrative.

Wow. This place has gone full retard for about 25% of the posters.

Actually, IMO this virus is a gain of function, lab developed virus. It is capable of lots more severe sickness, and deaths. Have you ever thought about fact that we do not see such with ordinary colds?

But, the principles I stated are applicable with all diseases.

You are correct. Still they created many deaths from existing deaths. It was a GOF gone wrong. CDC/NIH are guilty as hell. Masks won’t help. The vax won’t help (it hurts). It is either a method to study SARS/MERS or HIV. Not sure which one initially. It was created here in the US (NC) and transferred to China where it walked out.

Still it’s not super deadly. Be interesting to see how it mutates.

That Christ founded the Church that would become the Catholic Church is a historical fact denied by no educated person. That it “lost it’s way” is your opinion. You’re welcome to it.
