Beth Moore Contradicts Scripture, Says We’re Born With a Drive to Seek God
reformation charlotte ^ | 5/12/21 | RC

In a stunning display of theological ignorance, Beth Moore makes a strange comparison of man to search engines. Comparing Adam to the creation of the “very first search engine,” Moore asserts that people are “born with a drive to seek out the things that are of God.”

What Beth Moore fails to acknowledge, though, is that we are not born with a drive to seek out the things of God. In fact, it’s exactly the opposite. We are born in a state of rebellion against God, with a sin nature. Romans 3:11 says “no one understands; no one seeks for God.”

We are not born with a drive to seek God. It is an act of the Holy Spirit that causes us to know God–it is because God sought us.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” –Luke 19:10

We are not born seeking God, Jesus said we must be born again.

Don't listen to Beth Moore! She is an ecumenical heretic pushing a global religion that is un-Biblical.

Would this be similar to what I have heard taught in Evangelical churches for decades, that every human being has a hole in their soul that only God can fill?

I think there are a few good people on religious TV, but also many who are not.

Good catch!

Jonah 1:3
But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

Uh, I’m pretty sure Romans says we are born with the Commandments written in our hearts.

I think you are referring to this?

Romans 2:14-15

14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

I think that describes everybody being without an excuse as to knowing right from wrong with regards to the conscience. Even if they are pagans.

I wouldn’t necessarily define that as seeking God since most people run away from Him.

From St. Paul’s preaching on Mars Hill”

“. . .and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might feel around for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His descendants.’” -Acts 17:26-28 NASB

Does not trump the more specific texts regarding our natural incapacity truly to know God apart from Christ and the Holy Spirit, but does give rise to a sense in which we grope about. Books have been written about this. I would not accept this woman as a teacher of the Church.

There are lots of theological bones one could pick with Beth Moore, but this isn’t one of them. Please read the Letter of James.

“Would this be similar to what I have heard taught in Evangelical churches for decades, that every human being has a hole in their soul that only God can fill?”

No. Yes, we are created with 4 parts. Body, Soul, Mind and Spirit. But, with the curse of sin from Adam, the Bible says we are born in Sin and that our Spirit is dead until it is reborn by the Holy Spirit through faith in the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross of His FREE gift of Salvation - and, it also says “But the same Spirit that raise Christ from the dead, will give Life to your mortal bodies.” - and Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit being alive within us “rivers of living water”.

It is written in Romans 1 that God indeed has imprinted on Man’s heart God’s law, so no man has an excuse(not the native on the Plains of Africa, nor the atheist explaining away God with evolution and Nietzsche), but, it says none seek him. And as others have said - the Holy Spirit is drawing men unto Christ continually - but yes it seems like a paradox - men seeking for truth, seeking for the fulfillment of that inner void. Men not satisfied even if they gain the whole world. But - Jesus said “No man comes to the Father but that the Spirit draws him”

I will also add this - it’s a seductive thing and at the root of our sinful nature to say we DID something for our salvation. I am NOT a Calvinist Pre-Destination guy - I accept the FIRST-THINGS-FIRST construction of the verse that says “Whom He did foreknow, He did predestine”. So in the context of this thread, Men have a void, they seek for ‘something’ to fill that void. God knows that they will respond to Him knocking on their heart - and He draws them in, tells them the FREE GIFT of His redemption and then the ONLY thing they must DO ‘DO’ is their Free Will to Accept. That to me is NOT ‘works’. Not like Faith and Works as James talks about to the believer. And not like many religions to ‘justify’ themselves by works. As Christians it is also so easy to fall into the trap of “I’m good, I’m better than you, I’m righteous because of how GOOD I live my life” - WRONG. That is again WORKS.

Meaning we know right from wrong without being told. Yet, we resist.

I think you might be referring to the "God-shaped vacuum" thought credited to Blaise Pascal. What He actually said was:

What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?

This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself. [Pascal, Pensees #425]
