Seventh Circuit Rules Illinois Can Restrict Churches to 10 People

While caring for the hungry 'requires teams of people to work together in physical spaces ... churches can feed the spirit in other ways,' the court ruled.

June 22, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against an Illinois church suing the state over its COVID-19 restrictions on freedom of religious assembly, potentially setting up another First Amendment showdown before the nation’s highest court.

In May, Illinois Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker laid out a five-phase plan for lifting the state’s public-health emergency, which among other things holds that, should COVID-19 cases continue to decline, public gatherings such as religious services would still be limited to 50 people until the release of “a vaccine or highly effective treatment widely available or the elimination of any new cases over a sustained period.”

In the meantime, churches had been limited to a cap of just ten people, prompting numerous lawsuits from churches all over the state. Under pressure, Pritzker issued a new set of guidelines on May 28, which changed the ten-person limit from a mandate to a suggestion.

Despite the governor backing down, the Christian nonprofit Liberty Counsel (LC) continued its lawsuit on behalf of Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church and Logos Baptist Ministries, noting that Pritzker could still re-impose the limit in the future.

“Unless and until there is a judicial declaration that Governor Pritzker has acted unconstitutionally thus far, there is nothing keeping him from changing his mind again, whether in this crisis or any future crisis,” LC declared last month.

The answer is to flip them the finger and ignore them just like the protesters. They count on fear based compliance. They fear the “optics” of arresting people at church. Force them...

If you can have a sanctuary city where criminals are protected throughout the city, why can’t you have a sanctuary church where criminals, as defined by the same people that protect criminals from prosecution, are protected by the church and recognized by the state government using the same intellection? If one is not prosecuted, why should the other one be especially when the church people are not creating crimes like murder, rape, and theft and being in one place. And the criminal has an even greater opportunity to get and spread the virus since he is free to cover more ground. Doesn’t make sense unless you are counting their voting base. They might want to reference the 14th amendment concerning equal protection under the law.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Am I missing something?

Yes, all you have to do is self-identify as 1/10 of a person and the problem is solved.

IF, God forbid, pedoJoe wins the POTUS and the senate flips over to the communists, within 6-12 months every church and synogogue in the USA will be forced closed using “hate crime” laws. They will then turn their “flying monkeys” lose to burn em all to the ground. Every single day we draw closer and closer to outright civil war.

Then lets restrict “news” broadcasts to ten minutes and newspapers to 10 pages.

Exactly. Church leaders have behaved pathetically by stopping church cause some atheist government overlord told them to. The first amendment is clear.

My church did a headcount when we re-opened. I returned the second week of re-opening, June 7th. We had 90 people in attendance, about half of them being visitors from other Catholic churches that not yet revived public masses, or had "10 people or less" rules in effect.

I'd like to see Gov. Lard Butt try to enforce this "victory". $100 says he's all but forgotten about his "rules" by now.

Satan seems to have never learned that the more the church is persecuted, the more it grows.

The left can try to restrict church attendance all it wants, but can NEVER come between God and His child.

And God IS keeping accounts.

I’m a color and am concerned about being racially profiled.

People assume I have *privilege* cause of my skin color.

Like being dirt poor is *privilege*.

I’m telling you, true churches are gonna have to go underground soon.

My friend, have you not heard? The one true church is Progressive; its God is political.

All other religions will serve or die.
