SBC leader Albert Mohler indicates support for Donald Trump in reversal of 2016 position

Calling him the most “consistent” president in American history, prominent Southern Baptist R. Albert Mohler Jr., indicated Wednesday that he will likely support President Donald Trump in 2020 despite not voting for him in 2016 when he also encouraged other Christian leaders to do the same...“I don’t have a different moral estimation of Donald Trump. Even in office he continually leaves me very frustrated in how he presents himself, how he speaks, but he has been more consistent in pro-life decisions, executive orders … than any president of the United States in any party. He’s been more consistent than any Republican certainly in the quality of appointments he has made to the federal judiciary, which will far outlive any presidency,” he said, noting that he will “will make a different political calculation in 2020.”...

And here I thought he was a “christian.” Hey, the world is hard to decipher, even the ones with names. Judge not, which is always one of our first choices.

It amazes me that people don’t like the way Trump presents himself they would rather have some smooth talking con man I DONT GET IT!! I loved Trump out of the gate he never looks for words he doesn’t hesitate looking for the right words he just says whatever he thinks like it or not!! Why in the hell don’t more people appreciate that???

Good question. Have you noticed he rarely, if ever, has any hesitation markers as he speaks? Obozo was proficient with every third word an “ah,” and every other word used to pause his diatribe as he thinks what to say next.

I'm with you KC.

I voted twice for Herman Cain because a Businessman who told the truth and understood our economy. I was waiting, hoping and praying Donald Trump would run. He plays 4D chess, pushes the right buttons and hits them out of the park.

Perhaps it was because Biden has said he would have Christians classified as terrorists and put on a Homeland Security watch list for surveillance?

It’s not like he holds any electoral influence.
His home state went i think 90/10 for Trump.
SBC-laden states went mostly the same.

Albert needs to grow up and live in the real world
With the rest of his flock, who are doubly wiser
By the mere estimation of my first three sentences.

Mohler is still only partway to a proper understanding of how faithful Christians should appraise Trump. Even though now a Trump supporter, Mohler continues to disparage him as having "poor moral character" based on moral derelictions before he became President and "how he presents himself, how he speaks."

Apparently, Christian teachings about forgiveness, redemption, and generosity of spirit as to mere appearances get short shrift with Mohler. At least for Trump, he is to be anchored forever to all the sins of his past and, in spite of a sterling Pro-Life record in office, is marked down for "how he presents himself, how he speaks."

Just what is Mohler referring to other than that he doesn't like Trump as a person? That Trump is morally irredeemable because he doesn't look like and use the dulcet tones of an SBC preacher? Such narrow-minded disapproval contradicts Christian doctrines and justly brings Christian preachers into popular disrepute as inveterate prigs and peck sniffs.

Moreover, I think that Mohler would not be so disapproving of a member of his flock. Instead, forgiveness and redemption would flow from Mohler, with the usual references to lost sheep, the Good Thief, redemption through Christ, and judge-not-lest-ye-be-judged. Not for Trump though, for some reason. Am I the only one to imagine that a discreet wad of folding money on the collection plate would soften Mohler toward Trump?

Even worse are Black minister and leader Dwight McKissic and Karen Swallow Prior, professor of English at Liberty University. Both scorn Trump.

In spite of all that Trump accomplished for Black Americans, McKissic is hostile toward him -- and to Mohler for supporting Trump this year. As McKissic puts it, Mohler doesn’t "care about the sensitivities of the majority of African Americans who find Donald Trump a repulsive personality and politician."

Oh, well, how evil can one get? That a white SBC leader does not reflexively follow the views of a supposed majority of African Americans so as to determine how he thinks and votes. And this is supposed to be Christian thinking?

As for Prof. Karen Swallow Prior, she finds both Trump and Biden unacceptable and will vote for an undisclosed third party candidate more to her taste. At best, this marginalizes Christians and their teachings by isolating them from political decisions that require the weighing of flawed choices.

Of course, as an additional and obvious point, Prof. Prior seems to prove that as if by academic rule, even at Liberty University, being an utter dope is no bar to becoming a full professor.

In fairness to the faithful Christians whom I know personally, they were almost all Trump supporters in 2016 and are now fervent Trump supporters in the 2020 election. There are times when the best of Christian thinking and conduct is to be found among Christians themselves and not among their putative leaders.

In other words... Albert’s getting tired of being bent over and lied to by pol after pol, just like the rest of us.

Trump is Trump, he’s not a damn liar like the rest of them.

That will probably be enough to split the SBC, there is another idiot that is close friends with Soros by the name of Russell Moore is a Never Trumpet and spouts lies about Trump constantly. It is really sad because he has a budget of millions to use.

How Trump speaks?

I guess he misses Trump’s now-often praise to, humble acknowledgment of and supplications to God at the podium the past few months. They are not a put-on or convenient affectation.

Yeah well thanks Albert....

...as a Christian it bothered me greatly that his strong efforts to turn Christians away from voting for Donald Trump were quoted and applied in doing just that to voting church attending Evangelicals ...... even some of my relatives!

However I was onboard as of June 16, 2015......right off the escalator!

Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell Jr, Pastor Robert Jeffress, Phyllis Schlafly had more sway over me than any words of non recommendation from the SBC

I wonder who he did vote for. Hillary? I question this guy’s discernment abilities.

“You had the bombshell of the video in which he made comments to a television personality that were just beyond even the moral vocabulary of most evangelical Christians...”

A most amazing, most absurd statement. Mohler needs to climb down from his ivory tower and get out more often.

For Believers, the only question that truly matters is what is God’s Will. Votes are precious seeds and should be prayerfully sown. We may not like what we see on the outside of a candidate, but what is inside is what truly matters. That is why we need God’s Wisdom during primaries/elections.

1 Samuel 16:7 (AMP)
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
