SYDNEY, NSW — A Missouri nun who was caught trying to smuggle cocaine through the heels of her shoes at an Australian airport said her online boyfriend tricked her into doing it.
Denise Woodrum, 51, was arrested last year after customs officers at Sydney Airport found two pounds of drugs in the high heels of the shoes she had packed, according to Newsweek.
It was Hendrik Cornelius, a man Woodrum met online, who duped her into transporting the drugs, said Rebecca Neil, Woodrum’s attorney.
"She went on this trip thinking she was bringing artifacts for him," her attorney said.
Woodrum and Cornelius, who never met in person, exchanged hundreds of text messages between April and August of last year, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.
"There are fraudsters out there who are relying on women who are vulnerable,” Neil said.
However, the judge handling the case said he wasn’t convinced by her explanation.
Woodrum, a Catholic sister of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ in Kansas, has been in Australian custody since she arrived in Sydney. She’s expected to be sentenced next month.

1. How do you put TWO pounds of drugs in the heels of a woman’s pair of shoes?
2. Why does a nun have a boyfriend?
Two pounds (probably a kilo) of cocaine in high heel shoes. Sorry, but it has to be several pairs of shoes, I am pretty sure you can’t pack a pound of cokes in the heel and sole of a single shoe. Color me skeptical that she didn’t know about the coke.
