Priests Do Not Have Experience to Prepare People for Marriage, Says Vatican Cardinal
The Irish Times ^ | 7/3/18 | Patsy McGarry

Pope Francis, ‘unnoticed, has gradually been putting women into positions of power’

Priests have no credibility when it comes to training people for marriage, according to the most senior Irish cleric in the Vatican.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, from Drimnagh in Dublin and prefect (head) of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life said “priests are not the best people to train others for marriage.

“They have no credibility; they have never lived the experience; they may know moral theology, dogmatic theology in theory, but to go from there to putting it into practice every day....they don’t have the experience.”

Clericalism is dead, the Cardinal behind the World Meeting of Families in Dublin next month also said, “not because we’ve done anything to kill it, but out of sheer numbers.” In Dallas, where he was Bishop from 2007 to 2016, “we have a million and a half Catholics and 75 priests, with a 45 to 50 per cent rate of (Mass) attendance. Those 75 priests are not going to be interested in organising marriage meetings,” he said.

“We have to worry about the 99 per cent, about the baptised, and not worry about the other things we have been obsessed with.” (Dublin’s Catholic archdiocese, with a population of 1.15 million Catholics, has 413 diocesan and religious priests).

In the Bible, Jesus and Paul lay out the guidelines for Marriage.

Neither of them were ever married.

As the good Bishop Tobin of Rhode Island pointed out on twitter, Cardinal Farrell is, by his own logic, unqualified to head up a Vatican department focused on “family life.”

Except for those African priests that we’re not supposed to talk about, right Cardinal?

Neither of them were ever married.

Hate to play devil's advocate, but, well, they just don't know what marriage is like.

This is ludicrous. Since when must one "live" the experience in order to see what works and what doesn't. Any priest has as examples all the marriages in his congregation.

Also, there are those guys called "deacons", most of whom ARE married. In our parish, the marriage prep is overseen by the deacon.

It’s a shame that there aren’t any other churches these people can go to if they don’t like the one they have. Gotta ruin everything.

Paul was married at one time. It was a requirement for the Sanhedrin.

Nobody can prepare you for marriage. No matter what anyone tells you, it’s going to be absolutely different from what you expected or anticipated.

Marriage is wonderful, but it takes effort.

Part of the problem is that even Christian counselors have catered to secular psychology trends, which don't adequately challenge the materialism and self-centeredness at the root of the modern world's conceptions of marriage.

A good priest's job is to lay out for the couple a theological/mystical basis for their union so that each spouse intellectually, spiritually enters into the union with a firm understanding of the notions and implications of "sacrament" and of a "covenant" sealed and made before God.

Marriage as a sacrament is designed to prepare each spouse for eternity, to bear witness the love of Christ to each other, and to procreate. THat's how the unmarried men Jesus and Saint Paul described it in the New Testament.

Not saying there isn't room for secular therapy, but that the sacramental/mystical basis is so often set aside. And people's understanding of the spiritual magnitude of the union is diminished from the get-go. Marriage is NOT "eternal" (only Mormons believe that) -- but it's supposed to serve as an earthly testimony of Christ's eternal union with his people, the church.

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. ~ Ephesians 5:31-33

And besides, if a child has any real idea of his parents’ personal relationship, there’s way too much (ahem) exposure.

Priests, bishops, and the Pope himself have no experience conducting scientific experiments.

Then it follows that they have no authority to give any advice on atmospheric phenomena, including "climate change".

Men should be taught about the importance of securing an ironclad premarital contract before getting married.

Which is not the same as marriage counseling.

Single people have NO concept about what marriage is all about and are absolutely unqualified to prepare others for marriage.
