OSV column from Monsignor Pope Ping!
Wow....is Roman Catholicism ever ate up with such non-BIBLICAL rituals.
Not a nod, Monsignor, but a bow, upon hearing the holy Name of Jesus.
You could easily have made this a caucus thread.
It was great watching everyone follow protocol at the Assisi Basilica recently when I attended mass there.
Matthew 3
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Amen.
Yes, I bow my head at the mention of His name, although I admit that there were many years during which I had fallen out of this practice.
About 8 years ago, I resumed the practice of signing myself when passing a Catholic church or a graveyard.
“clergy wear birettas (a kind of square hat with a pom)
“tipping (lifting off) of the biretta at the names of Jesus, Mary and the saint of the day.
“making the Sign of the Cross when passing a Catholic Church
“praying the Angelus at noon and 6 p.m.”
How very sad.
My faith has found a resting place,
Not in device nor creed;
I trust the Ever-living One,
His wounds for me shall plead.
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea;
It is enough that Jesus died,
And that He died for me.
(The “Saint Of The Day”? Really?)
I see nothing has changed while I was away.
The only useful post in this entire 900+ reply thread is your OP.
So much wasted effort by Christians.
